Pay us 20 Grand and your kids can come here.

This is an interesting article.  The idea of paying the shot above your school taxes for your kids to be accepted in another district says a lot about "public" schools.

This may be a stereotype and I apologize to any NYC natives, but I never thought NYC schools were all that good. This leads me to a question I have pondered:

What if New York City became its own state (or like DC)?

I know New York is an expensive city, but $20,000? One thing's for sure, they better know that that is one dang good school.

Just to clear up a misconception here: New York City's public schools don't really have the best rap, but their students are not the targets of this particular offer. The targets are families in nearby towns such as Greenwich, CT or Armonk, NY who have a lot of money and are more than willing to spend it paying tuition for their kids to go to a school that will give them a higher class education than the local public schools. Most residents of New York City itself cannot afford $20,000 a year in tuition for a private school.

I got the impression from the article that these are not private schools.  They are public schools in a district that is a little on the budgetary short side and are trying to keep their system intact.  No fees accrue to residents, I believe, other than their school tax which must be rather onerous.

Correct, these are the public schools of the village of Rye Brook, NY. The issue is not so much directly budgetary as it is that the school-age population of the village has shrunk and they now have more teachers/staff than they need. Rather than lay some of these teachers off, they have decided to try and bring in more students so there is still demand for them. Knowing how things work around here there is probably some sort of union that represents the teachers and would resist layoffs.

Maybe.  Unions are very good at flying in the face of the facts.

Yes, do in New York it costs 20 grand to go while here in Philadelphia they cut 3000 teachers, particularly on support and music staff. That's crap. Not to offend anybody, but it's so bad elsewhere, here for example, to the point that a banned plane was flying around Philly with a sign that said to fire Michael Nutter for letting that happen. It's great that people get education, but the lack thereof disgusts me.

EDIT: I'm not in one of those. That's my local. I'm a suburbanite.
