Wait, we can change our name now?

Having been gone for a couple of years, the name-change ability was news to me. My only question is, what in the world would I change it to?

I have considered using the various online gaming names I have used previously and currently;

Flapslapper was one I made up because it just sounded funny, then someone gave it a new and somewhat offensive meaning. Can't use that.

Sweet Fluffy Bunnies and The Lonely Dressmaker were hysterical for war shooters (such and such was killed by Sweet Fluffy Bunnies!), but not quite the image I'd want here. Ditto for SplatGoesYoHead.

I'm not really asking for suggestions, I'm far too antisocial to use any of them anyway.

But wow... ST throws me a curveball.

Just noticed that today, too. I've been waiting for my two year member anniversary, which is coming up in June, to change my username, but now I don't have to. I don't think it should be allowed every year, though. A one-time change for people like me, who didn't put much though into their username, is appropriate in my opinion.

Sit tight.  You clearly like Robertson Davies.  I've mostly hung on to mine since I've been here.

With that in mind, I've thought about consolidating my online identities...but then again, do I want to?

I've been waiting for my two year member anniversary, which is coming up in June, to change my username, but now I don't have to.

Before this option was available, ST told me I had to wait three years! :P December 23, 2013 I believe (I joined in 2010).  When I was looking into changing my username, the name "Jack" was available–now it's taken. :( I'm just going to keep it the way it is, even though I really hate it.

My name was Jack3oh3, Captain Jack3oh3.

When I joined back in '07 I had no exprience of online forums and did not really realise at the time how important a username is to your online identity.

Originally I was just 'abcvs'   an acronym for 'Airway, Breathing, Cardio Vascular System'...   ok so that meant something to me at the time working as a recovery nurse, but I quickly realised that being called by and being known as an acronym was not entirely ideal.   (It did make for some interesting variations like abbycus, abbicivcus, etc...

So a couple of years ago, I added Craig to the front...   now folks tend to ignore the 'abcvs' bit, and just call me Craig.    Which is absolutely fine by me, because after all that does happen to be my name!

Just curious... Are alt code symbols or other symbols allowed in a username?

I've never understood why anyone would want to change their username, but then, my online identity being "Duke" is pretty well entrenched, at least outside of social media (I use my real name on Facebook, but that's more of an accessory to real life than a true internet presence IMO).

ETA: yes, you can use all sorts of symbols in your username. Might not render correctly in everyone's browser, but you can.

Well, like in my case, some users create a username without experience and knowledge of online forums and the significance of a username, like Craig said. Other times users join thinking they won't be active on the website, also like my case, so they don't put thought into their username. Later on some people want to be represented by a different name either because they're embarrassed by their name, they don't like the name they're known as, or it no longer suits them. On the other hand, that means that username changes can be confusing or difficult to adapt to when a person has been identified by a certain name, especially if for a long time or if the user changes their name multiple times. That's why I think the amount should be limited to one change.

I have a different username on almost everything I'm on, but I was crazyllamasim until December 2012 when I changed to Mr Satrn

I, for the most part, now go by this name. Or variations. The most common one know that I'm slowly streamlining to is "simlink" - I've also used "sim_link" (duh!) and "simLink" - and on some sites just "link."

But in the sims community I go be my EA Origin name, largely because I only have origin so I can patch The Sims 3.

LarksTonguesInAspic is my frontrunner right now. It's a progrock reference that in turn refers to an entire music philosophy.

GTAWpro came to mind, it's my career trade.

    the thing has been done.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larks'_Tongues_in_Aspic

It doesn't mention that LTIA was a dish served in ancient Rome. Whole flocks of larks were captured, and only the tongues were utilized at sumptuous banquets for the rich and powerful. The rest of the bird was thrown away. Aspic is a kind of meat gelatin.

It has come to symbolize decadence and greed among the topmost clique, and the underlying philosophy was that civilization will always destroy itself.

Now, I'm no liberal or fan of the Occupy movement; for me, it's a commentary on human nature. I pass no judgement on that, as part of the human race. Robert Fripp believed that civilization would destroy itself, and the only hope for music was to organize into small mobile cells of technologically advanced and self-sufficient quasi-bands. That has been realized as a multitude of side 'projeKcts' and collaborations.

The basic premise has not yet been borne out on a large scale, but has produced some very unique and interesting music.

This is part 3 of what would become 5; the 5th piece went by a different name. For the musicians, it is believed that Robert Fripp is the only person in the world who can play the opening with a flat pick (he cross-picks). Just a little disco involved, but still a frenetic and groundbreaking piece. More 80s prog, probably before your time.

I used to go with the user name mrtnrln, but due to obvious practical reasons and low recognition value I decided to change it to MandelSoft a year ago. And I'm very pleased with my current username. It's easy to remember, pronounce and you can recognise it easily ;)

Just one word of warning regarding name changes:

After changing your name, you'll still need to sign in using your original username, as set on registration to the site.

I know it might be a bit confusing, but what actually will change is your display name, which is slightly different from a username. A display name is your account's visible name on the site / forums, and a username is only used to sign in (which will always remain the same). When registering, you're initially required to provide one username, which then doubles up as your visible display name. This shouldn't be noticeable unless you sign out.

So to save this hassle, if you've not already done so, it might be worth checking the "Remember me" option when signing in. This will overwrite your previously saved credentials.

I always do, and Chrome saves it to the cloud. This came in very handy when my hard drive died, I didn't lose login info or passwords for several dozen sites. That was a real headache dodged!

Which is ironic because I hate dogs. I'm much more of a cat person.

Well that was my avatar for quite a while. :P
