At 60 k pop any layout is best. Try it with 200+k pop, 5000+ unfilled jobs, a specialization running and then write back. Oh right, and 2 neighboring cities.

Those close intersections between avenues and streets would stop traffic dead.

perablenta is most definitely right....

This city would not function properly around 120k+ population.  I build all my cities without intersections.  Have you tried to build traffic circles into your city?  They work WONDERS.

It is very aesthically pleasing though....

It's pleasing to the eye, as the above poster said, but it seems like a waste of space, and might be trouble when you get a lot of people.

Made a topic like this a few months ago, but I forgot about it. :P We can use this thread then.

Have you tried the "mod" where you can make overpasses? I haven't tried it myself, but I heard it can help.  Plus, if you have the BOC mod, you can find room to make realistic elevated highways and overpasses, if that's your thing.

I have also been experimenting with sunken "highways", which requires a lot of work but is worth it:

Just imagine a highly populated city with those!

Yep.

It takes some time to make a good looking one, but it is worth it in the end.

So I'm starting to get a hang of how to balance my lot's space between profit and necessities, but now the real challenge seems to be that evil T word. Yep, Traffic *hisses*

I've watched some YouTube videos (not all of them, I'm just to eager to play the game instead of watching an hour long video about playing the game) and I've even seen a lot of suggestions on here.  I'm still trying to come up with a very good form of traffic management. Currently, my zoned areas resemble the lines between a brick wall, starting from the gridline at the edge of the map and alternating each gridline between road and no road, intersected by long straightaways. This gives no no 4-way intersections at all. I also learned a little trick about making the intersections of a high density street and high density avenue without stoplights. My Megatower traffic, when possible, is tunneled to the industrial areas in a way that only that tower's traffic will use the road. I have also started putting small plops of commercial zones scatterd within my residential zones (a change from originally using commercial to act as a buffer between residential and industrial). I usually end up getting rid of all of my commercial and just building malls in my Megatowers, but I'm not sold on this method yet.

I think I'm doing pretty good, but still, I see the red lines of traffic and feel ashamed of my road-laying skills, so I want to hear more comments about how you guys manage your sims.

I will post pics but the idea of effectively separating inbound region traffic, particularly in the form of tourists, from your city's sims' traffic to and from work/school is the key to a well fuctioning city. Usually this is done in the form of loops (of avenues) that allow as much traffic as possible in a line between successive instersections.

The three roads that cross through the mountain weren't in the original plan, but the pathfinding forced my hand. Traffic isn't terrible, and I stay above 86% approval, so most sims are getting their needs met, which everyone knows is trying after 100-150K pop.

I am planning another city for the amusement park dlc (and maybe to tackle the expo center which has killed me in the past) that uses a more complex interchange, it works in my head so far...lol.

The best solution, that i tried, is with the less intersction possibile and two avenues, one that circles the inside of the city and the other outside the city. Offcourse if you need less traffic you need a good transportation system.

@RobDanger: Ahh, so it is about segregating traffic then. I'm starting to get good about doing that with commuters from megatowers, but still need practice with commuters from the zoned residential. I hear on YouTube that the sims work at new places everyday and, after work, go back to a random house, making traffic much more difficult. Was that ever true or was it fixed in an update?

Thanks for the pictures, and be sure to update me on your amusement perk city, that road layout looks promising, and daunting, lol

I rarely ever have 4-way intersections, and I try to place avenues that bring traffic to the inside and another that takes it from the outside. Now that you mention transportation systems, can you accidently make a bus system that congests traffic more than it helps?

This is my near 400k pop. city. The traffic a little bit hard in daytime, but not kill my city, so my people are happy! I test many road layout (i play 396hour with Simcity), but this is the best for me. I hope this pictures help you to build your cities. (Sorry my bad english!)

The Bus System is best in the beginning but slowly it turns to bad. The Sims are Lazy even to get to the Bus Stop. I just hope that some update use "one way street" or "one lane" because its hopeless to "command" sims laziness :\

One-way streets would be awesome. I could finally manage my major-city traffic like a real major city does.

Smulgrum - if you're still on.  How does that city layout work if you delete all the bussing?  I'm curious because so far I've found busses to create more problems than they resolve... including traffic concerns.  Could you show the RCI layout?  Im' wondering if you used a pattern for the (like one side of the street) for your residential zoning, or if it's any side.

I tried to attach a file. I used the school map to translucent the buildings then selected the road tool to show that all my roads are clear or green.  It is also 0730 or peak of commute time.
