I'd say 'New Hampshu' (in fact, quite like the British voice of Google Translate pronounces it).

Also: I just booked plane tickets for Edinburgh, for my 'Masters trip', with the people of university :D

Apparently in Scotland they pronounce Edinburgh "ed in burra", not "ed in burg". Lots of US cities end in "-burg" or "-burgh", but all of them follow the latter pronunciation pattern as far as I know.

But then there are lots of these oddities. Most places that have a Newark pronounce it "New urk". In Delaware, it is pronounced "New ark", like Noah's ark.

Generally a place named "Delhi" would be pronounced just like "deli". The village of Delhi, New York, however, is pronounced "Del high" - because its name has nothing to do with Delhi, India. It's named Delhi because it's near the headwaters of the Delaware river, and is thus "high on the Delaware".

No-one's entirely sure why Rhode Island is named such, but the second half of its name (and Providence Plantations) isn't named after anyone - it was named such by Roger Williams who believed God had brought him and his followers there.

There was a reenactment as to what events took place in the naming process.

Also my favorite media player Winamp is ending tomorrow, Now who will "really whip the llama's ass?"

Damn llamas got lucky this time, but the fight isn't over.

I've noticed I sometimes have a habit of "discovering" things when they are past their heyday. WinAmp would be one of those things. I've been aware of it for years. I know it hasn't been cool since like 2005. But I started using it... in 2010. Why? Well prior to that I'd been using Windows Media Player since I was old enough to be playing music on the computer. But then I got a new laptop, and discovered that Windows 7's update to it is god-awful and made what was previously a perfectly fine program unusable to me. I switched to WinAmp because it was able to play .wma files (which a chunk of my library is stored as, since when I first ripped a bunch of my CDs I didn't know better than to just let WMP do so to its default format) and because it works the same-ish as Windows Media Player did.

I understand that most people these days use iTunes, but my hatred of Apple means I refuse to even consider it. I also understand that a lot of people have switched to using cloud services such as Spotify or Pandora in lieu of storing their own personal music collection... but I really like having possession of the things I use so that I don't have to worry about licensing issues cutting off my access or other such crap. So I'll continue to keep my own library, thanks.

It seems I pronounce New Hampshire as Nuw-ampshah.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

2409: Yeah, but you're a Queenslander :P I've noticed that the stereotypical Aussie broad accent tends to only be present in Queensland, especially in the northern parts.

What most Americans consider to be "no accent" is what's known in linguistic fields as "Midland Neutral" - that is to say, it's how people in the midwest talk. Since this is how most people on TV in the US speak, it's now widely considered to be the standard "accentless" way of doing so. But technically there is no such thing as speaking without an accent - everyone has one, we just don't perceive the way we talk as being an accent since we think "someone with an accent" means "someone who talks differently from me".

Similarly, in Italy, there are tons of regional variations on the language and prior to WWII there was no standard. Then Mussolini decided the Florentine dialect should be the standard for all of Italy, and that is what most people now know as "Italian". Regional variations in speaking still persist, though, and when when my relatives speak Italian they often say things in a noticeably different way from what textbooks consider to be correct. This of course is because since my family is from Southern Italy, the dialect they speak is not Florentine. :P

It's closer to 800 miles, but still interesting.

Up the road from Albany is Denmark.

Ah. I couldn't recall the exact figure but I was way off. Thanks for clarifying.

Since I lived in Michigan's Upper Peninsula for college and worked for a family-owned little grocery store my accent was slowly muddled with the Yooper accent, which is basically just a Canadian or Minnesotan accent.  I don't know what that would be called officially.

There was also a woman who lived there who was from Georgia, and she had this beautiful Southern Belle accent that she laughingly told me she had to practice every day to maintain in the face of the all the Yoopers' "Yah, eh?" and "aboot."  People are very fond of their local native accents.

I'll admit I probably have a minor accent but it isn't a full blown stereotypical one, I noticed I don't really use the "e" at the end of words all that much so here sounds like "her" and there thairr, but apart from that I pretty much sound like other parts of the country, although I noticed from my time in NY that BK has a really strong accent as does New Joorsey or however they say it on TV, their accent always reminds me of the sopranos for some reason.

I don't have a real accent since Brabantian (the regiolect of the place I live, Brabant) was the basis for the standard language in Flanders. So my accent is the standard language, in fact :D

2416: Although the Australian dialect doesn't differ much between people, Victorians tend to replace 'el' with 'al'. So hence, I'd say something like "walcome to Malbourne."

Sadly, the lifestyle of musicians sends a lot of them to an early grave. Some of them die of drug or alcohol overdoses (Jim Morrison, John Bonham). Some of them commit suicide (Ian Curtis, Kurt Cobain). Some of them get shot by others (John Lennon, Tupac Shakur).

The life of a rockstar ain't easy.

And then you have the Rolling Stones, who have been active since 1962, which was over 50 years ago. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards have been in it the whole time, Charlie Watts since 1963.

I think Mick Jagger's body is entirely composed of drugs by this point.

Royalty in medieval times ate a lot of meat but not a lot of fruits and veggies. For this reason, the middle class in that era actually had the healthiest diet.
