Vehicle accidents

This may be a stupid question, but........

What causes car/bus/truck accidents?  Do Sims have a lead foot and not watch where they are going?  Do their brakes fail?  Are STOP signs obstructed by shrubs, causing them to turn in front of oncoming traffic?

It seems like I'm hearing a lot of *SCREEEEEECH....KA-POW!* going on.  Occasionally I see cars spinning out across the road and hurtling into buildings.  Is this just a "reality" feature built into the game, or is it an indication that I'm laying out my road network incorrectly?

I believe the frequency might have a connection to the amount of traffic on those roads. That's really only my guess, and sure one of the pros will have a better explanation than I.

My understanding is, the cars are for "eye candy" only, however if one is getting wrecks in or near the same place all the time, the road needs or should be widened or reduce the congestion of said road... When an advisor says "This road/street/avenue, is congested that is usually where more of the wrecks occur. It is funny sometimes to watch cars spin around then drive on the grass.

Yes, accidents meant that the road in question is congested, which in SC4 means it's over 100% of its nominal capacity.  The more badly congested the road is, the more accidents you'll have.

Consider it an auditory signal that you need to do something.

Using the traffic congestion view should help to identify roads that are over the capacity threshold. But before upgrading the road, a workaround might be to bulldoze and re-lay it. However, this will only work if it's a short term problem. If the congestion persists, then upgrading to a higher capacity network is likely to improve things.

EDIT: Removed advice deemed to be invalid.

    Thank you.  Question answered.

Another stupid question, from the king of members who shouldn't express their opinion about anything:  How do you mark a thread as "Answered"?  I don't know what to click so I can mark someone's response as the "Best answer".

This is new and probably a moderator thing.

Okay.  Well, I'll let a moderator do what they need to do.  For my part, the issue is resolved.....Z1 gave the answer I found most helpful, but thanks to everyone for all your responses.

If it's a short term problem, then it will disappear on its own.  I would definitely not recommend bulldozing and redrawing a road just because of congestion; not only does it solve nothing in the long run, but it is often not possible to redraw the road in an area that has been built up since the road was originally drawn.  Then you've really got a problem.

I believe this feature is currently only available in the "Technical Issues" forums:

    E.g.

The option is provided to the topic author, who can decide which answer was the most helpful in solving the problem.

This can make it easier for other people, to quickly find a solution to a similar issue.
