Couple questions

I'm very new to SimCity. I played around with it quite a bit, and I played with Cities 2012.

but I never tried to actually make a real city. I always played in sandbox mode, or had the cheats for cities.

I started a real city without sandbox for the first time. It did 'so so'. I got up to about 55,000 residents. but i'm stuck and not sure what to do.

First problem. I installed a ferry port at one side, near an industrial area. There are a lot of residents on one side. I also put up big ben near the residents. my goal is to bring in tourists.

I also have a passenger train station for the same reason. it seems to be doing ok but mostly is just transporting residents around.

the ferry isn't brining anyone at all.

The first question, does SimCity 'pretend' there are other cities around? Or do I ahve to build out other sections of the region to create travelers?

Second question. High wealth shoppers. How in the world do I get them? I've got everyone up to mid level but have no high wealth. I can't figure out how to make that transition.

Last, recycling. how do I make it work? Even in sandbox mode I created a city with a couple hundred thousand and built a recycling plant, but though the garbage service is busy, nobody recycles. how do I change that? I want my little monkeys being good to their digital planet.

Thanks for any advice. Some of this is frustrating but it's fun in real mode, having to think ahead, use money wisely etc.

Tourists will visit your city if you create many reasons for them to, that's why you're probably not getting many ferry tourists. If you want more tourists provide them services they'll want to enjoy, like an expo center or casinos.

For high wealth shoppers you need high wealth residents. Place some $$$ parks near a residential zone and raise the $$ houses to $$$.

Your city requires an education level in order to recycle. The more educated your populace, the more they'll attempt to recycle.

  • Ahhh ok it's education. Crap there's no room for schools now. dangit.

I guess I'll have to start another city and try it that way. it's difficult to manage all the services, but i guess that's the point of the game eh?

    thanks for the help

Fortunately you don't really need too many schools. The way the game is setup is that your city has a student population that needs to attend any educational building, so if you work your way up to unlocking a university or community college you'll only need that one building and not any of the others (like grade schools or high schools).

Yea, I had big trouble upgrading my university becouse of that.

When you decide to go with education it's best to start right from the beggining. Educated sims will have less crime, fire and sickness so u can save money on those services (still need those but less than in unedcuated city). Also click 'Guide me' in education tab and wait till u get mission before building grade school and adding classrooms and buses. Those missions are really easy and you would do those things anyway, but now u get 10-30k $ almost each mission.

The ferry ferries people from one city to another.

Be sure you have the cruise ship dock uprade.  That's what brings tourists.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention that. I assumed that's what he already did, but it is good to confirm.

  • OK one last question.

I made a mistake. After I got this city up and running, I claimed anoter city in that same region, but let my son play around. like any child he broke everything spent all the money on firetrucks and killed the city.

I figured I'd just abandon the city later. Which I did, but it doesn't reset it. it leaves it there as-is but unclaimed.

is there a way to dump the city completely so I can start over?

No. There is no way to "reset" the city. What you can do is demolish everything (roads) in the city and start over. The natural resources and the pollution will keep its latest status.

However there was a reported bug that after you demolish the service buildings (hospital, police station...) and later build another one, their services vehicles will disappear. Don't know if it's fixed. Be cautious about that though...

  • bummer. I'm not sure how that will work. if I'm broke already and demolish everything I can't build anything to start earning income.

And of course he took out all the bonds. I think he just wanted to se if he could bankrupt it :(

Bad part is my other city is up to 120,000 people and starting to turn around, but because I added things I spend the money i had ther (all but about 40k) and have to tread water till the income gets better again. I was at 10k positive income but building out the city services took me back down to +3000

Try to earn enough money to start a specialization, they make lots of money. With a few processor plants and TV factories you can easily make millions per day, this will help you economically jumpstart your region because you'll be about to cash infuse other cities with big gifts! If you don't think you can afford a specialization or if you don't have the room you can always try to raise taxes a bit. The poorer the civilians the more tolerant they are of higher taxes. I forget the exact numbers, but if my memory serves I think 12/10/9 or 12/11/9 is the limit before your populace will start complaining.

  • Ahh.. thank you! That was the specialization I kind fo put to the side because I wasn't sure how to do it. The gaming is kind of a no brainer. Build it then cater the city around it.

Though something strange happened. I obviously screwed something up. I had 3 small casinos, all making about 25k per day, and a willis tower making over 39k per day. OVERNIGHT they dropped to nearly zero, all at the same time, and all of my high wealth tourists stopped coming.

I can't think of a single thing i did that would drastically change that, but I had to have done something.

Sorry for the newbie questions, i'm very new, and trying to learn this the right way, so I'm slow, but I really appreciate the help i've gotten so far.

The ferries will bring in low and medium wealth tourists.  The cruise ship brings in high wealth tourists.  There is no need to use the cruise ship unless you either want high end tourists or have the high end casino.

The best method to bring in low and medium wealth tourists is to use a combination of the train, regional bus, and ferry.  Place the train stations and/or bus terminal near your retail shops, attractions, and/or casinos for best effect.

Once you've unlocked a university you don't need anything else.

I'm not sure if I'm following you...you only need one school each in the region?
