Wuhan Facts

     Wuhan is the capital of Hubei Province in central China and is a financial, cultural, and political center of the region.  The city lies on the Chang Jiang and Han rivers and is made up of three distinct neighborhoods, Wuchang, Hanyang, and Hankou.  The city was founded more than 3,000 years ago and was a busy port during the Han Dynasty.  The world-famous Yellow Crane Tower was built in the city during the eighth century AD and was made a provincial capital during the Yuan Dynasty and was one of China's chief commerce centers by the 1700s.  Sun Yat-sen's 1911 Wuchang Uprising that overthrew China's last dynasty, the Qing, was centered here.  Nearly 5 million people live in Wuhan.

Mombasa Facts

     Mombasa was founded in the 11th century and quickly grew to dominate the East African trade.  The city dealt mainly in the Arab-African slave and ivory trades.  Vasco da Gama was the first European to set foot in Mombasa in 1498; two years later the Portuguese sacked the city.  The city was captured by the Sultanate of Oman in 1698, the Sultanate of Zanzibar in 1840, and the British in 1898.  It became capital of the British East African Protectorate.  In 1963, the city was ceded to newly-independent Kenya.  Today, Mombasa is Kenya's second-largest city, behind Nairobi, and is one of Africa's key Indian Ocean ports, being linked to central Africa by the Uganda Railway.  Around 1 million people live in greater Mombasa.
