Constant need for more residential

Hi

Just wondering what is the best way to get a big population later on. To explain it better, I create my city and after I'm beginning to generate more money, bigger building etc. There is always a residential shortage. I assume I need to increase the density bar (when you click a house), how is this done?

Buildings increase density if they're happy and if the road they're on allows it (medium density roads/avenues can only hold up til medium density buiildings).

Upgrade the roads to allow density increases and make sure you leave enough empty land for larger buildings to grow. You get the hang of subdividing land efficiently as you play the game more. If that doesn't work, I recommend creating cities that are all or mostly residential to satisfy your regional residential demand.

Where are you seeing that residential shortage? If you mean the green/blue/yellow RCI meter bars, a green bar doesn't mean you need more residential in most cases.

Go into the detailed info and look at the exact number of jobs and exact number of workers for info on what to zone.

RCI takes into account a large number of different areas, making it a very complex measurement, not suitable for choosing what to zone.

It's constantly saying "Worker Shortage", or "Not enought shoppers", no matter how much residential areas I have built in... But besides that (and the inconstant "sewage pipes backed up" thing), the game is running smoothly.

I magically got 60.000 extra workers in my region due to commuters... got 110.000 jobs openings, and just 50.000 workers in my cities totally. All jobs in the § + §§ are occupied, got some 4.000 unoccupied §§§ jobs.

I assume it is due to flawed agent management across regional play, that it simply cannot keep track of who is actually filling a job somewhere in the region xD

It will never stop saying that it is a shortage of things... if your adding more commercial/industrial then your gonna have a shortage of workers, if you have alot of residential then you will have a shortage on jobs. The key to everything is to make sure your building on the high density roads and adding high land value parks in like every cluster of RCI. The parks are not just for residential, they raise the land value of everything... which is the road to the shortage solution. Once the land value has risen, over time those initial high value homes will turn into high value condos & apt complex (the closer they are to the commercial sector) which holds thousands at a time and WILL increase you population WITHOUT adding more residential zones!!
