Great... I was somewhat okay with no industrial but this, this is just pathetic.  I'm hoping this is just a Sandbox thing.

Even more amusing is that if he lowered the land value, he could squeeze in even more people there.

The information tab on parks makes it clear that parks can replace jobs, I thought this was common knowledge.

The whole job system needs to be overhauled. Population numbers and trickling in engine mechanics need to be fixed as well. Then we could have a pretty amazing game.

Fully agree with Vana, basic game mechanics need an overhaul and rebalancing.

I tried it myself: building a city with residential only.

Suprisingly I ran into enormous costs because of health care, I started out with dirt roads, no idea if that has something to do with it. This eventually made me go bankrupt.

What happens is the following:

Sims need money and happiness.

The happiness you can provide through commercial and parks. So parks can substitute commercial.

As Sims do not go shopping they spend little money, just the tax they owe to us mayors.

When money runs out Sims become homeless. So you get some kind of zombie attack of roaming tramps :-)

However, when houses are upgraded, densitywise or incomewise,  or when they are bulldozed, new Sims move in, having full pockets, especially high income sims are pretty loaded, so it takes a long time for their money to run out.

I did not try spamming the city with parks, as they provide jobs too, perhaps that needs some tweaking by the devs.

My conclusion: you can only keep a residential only city afloat by bulldozing like mad...

The game has cut so many corners just to get it to work with the glassbox engine that it essentially isnt a city simulator anymore.

I do not agree with you as far as this aspect of the game is involved: a sim will stay in your city while he or she is happy and has money. Moroever, happyness can be bought at a shop :-). or be acquired  by taking a stroll in a park.  It surely is a simplification, but it is not illogical.
