There is one thing I though about the reason they didn't get more servers for the release, and it's because your saved games are attached to a single server. If that server shuts down, you also end up losing everything. And I can't wait to see what happened when we introduce the rest of the world into the mix, as Europe and quite a few other areas of the world haven't even received the game release yet. And it's that many more people being added to the same servers, not new servers.

Yes, silly you. New tech rarely works perfectly right out of the box doesn't it. You waited 10 years, a few days or weeks won't kill you.

And this is why we as consumers receive half-arse products at premium prices.

Are you talking about the actual game? or the launch? DrKing was talking about the launch.

The game doesn't have to be the game at launch?

I'm so stunned at how people are still defending EA, the dictator of the gaming industry.

I'm not surprised what's happened with this game, not at all. I am however surprised about all these people defending it even tho loads of people who bought it want a refund.

Stop defending it and speak out against EA and demand a refund, or don't buy at all.

Maybe then we'll get some good games again in the future.

When I compare this release with most of the online games I play, its nothing new. Personally I am thrilled that EA decided to bring Simcity into the online era. The mechanics are fun if thats what you enjoy. As a MMO player and a Online strategy game player, its what I want.

HOWEVER and its a big however. What I am in absolute shock about in how EA is managing the release. EA never has been that great when it comes to online game management. Look at how they handled earth and beyond. Sigh, still Irks me.

Anywho, I can't wait to see how the game develops in the next year. :D

I preordered in June because I wanted to support Maxis. I've been lucky to have no technical problems so far. Had I experienced technical problems, I would have been disappointed of course. But I wouldn't have been ripping the game completely and giving one star reviews. I would have waited To see how things panned out. Patience is a virtue people.

Well that was exhausting. I just played SimCity for the first time. I guess I didn't do my research, because if I had known I wouldn't have bought it. Barely got into choosing and starting my own region/city and the program crashed. That was after having to juggle servers to even play the game, and also waiting for multiple updates/downloads...

Every PC/Xbox game I've purchased in the past has been playable out of the box. Apply updates, grab a few drinks and go. The fact that this is cloud based should have raised big flags for me, but I was willing to give this new incarnation of one of my favourite game series of all time a shot. I will still give it a shot, I just think I'll have to wait and see how this whole server goes. It's just sad to see how many hardcore SC fans have been let down.

This is the same problem I had with Dawn of War II. It requires you to be logged into Steam to play, which is total BS. The original Dawn of War was/is a great game and multiplayer was available as part of the package, but offline play was allowed without having to "sign in" to some dumb third party network.

What ever happened to games with separate multiplayer and "in game" networks? Remember playing Command and Conquer: Red Alert or Tiberian Sun on in game networks? You know, when you created a user name and just joined a game, no third party crap. Oh yeah, EA bought out all those developers and basically ruined video gaming as we know it. Remember when games had amazing single player campaigns and skirmish modes? Remember when you DIDN'T have to have the internet to play a GAME? It's getting hard to remember all these different passwords and login names I need to play this, use that, login to this...

Psst, EA if you listening (and other game developers/publishers), sometimes it's nice to be antisocial and play your game privately. When I read a book, I don't stand on the corner and yell every sentence because I want everyone involved, I sit in a quiet place and have at it for hours at a time. SimCity has always been like a book, something you do yourself, a framework for your imagination. When we want to talk about it we will come onto a forum and do so, until then we are perfectly happy being selfish and antisocial cave dwellers obsessed with our virtual creations.

Sorry to vent, but I'm just tired of the usual EA, and to a larger extent the whole "internet connectivity" crap. I don't even know why I still buy these games, I guess I just have a part of me that hopes they will be painless and entertaining. I should just go back to playing Homeworld and Dawn of War against CPU opponents, and keep working on my SC4 region.

To be honest, I was reading this thread while loading the game; hoping it wasn't going to be that bad. Now I'm just glad I'm not the only one who is having problems playing the game I paid hard cash for.

I enjoy being told what I should think. Very endearing. It's your opinion, great.

Be careful; it is more dangerous when the horse you fall from is a high horse.

The game has some glitches, ok, who cares. The launch date is an arbitrary time. If the game isn't ready completely, that's a shame, but it's still a cool game. I played it for hours last night. Only got four hours of sleep. I enjoy it, so no, I'm not gonna "speak out" etc. You are perfectly welcome to do so. It doesn't matter to me what others' opinions are or what they do.

Days? Weeks? EA knew they wanted to make this game playbale entirely online, it wasn't a last minute decision. So how can you make an online game and not have enough servers to run them? So we have to take turns playing after dropping $60? And if my internet connection goes down, I can't play at all. This is garbage.

you're lucky you paid 60 bucks I paid 80 and I've been looking at this game for over two hours now waiting to play. This is a real rip off, no sorry, a robbery.

I'm really disappointed, and what retard would say the game just came out and you should wait for them to fix problems, that's done before you release something. Yes bugs here and there but playable. In my entire years of playing games, this is the first I've seen something like this, I'm 38 and I've been playing games since ATARI. I understand support for a company but, not for crap you sell that does not work. I love SimCity too but this is quite ridiculous, they need to take this game off DRM.

Edit: I preordered in June because I wanted to support Maxis. I've been lucky to have no technical problems so far. Had I experienced technical problems, I would have been disappointed of course. But I wouldn't have been crying and ripping the game completely and giving one star reviews. I would have waited To see how things panned out. Patience is a virtue people.

people pay money for a product and they have the right to expect the product to live up to expectations.

Ok, so maybe that's a bit extreme, but at the very least, they have the right to expect the product to WORK.

Name a single product anywhere else, in any market, on anything, that you'd be calling the people that feel they've been duped or cheated or defrauded "crybabies?"

Buy a bad meal at a restaurant....not bad cuz you didn't like it... but spoiled product?

Buy bad food at a grocery store?

Buy a car and it doesn't work to drive it home (the best analogy)

Get a new 60" LED TV, plug it in, no picture.

Order cable/satellite... no service.

Buy a knife and it isn't sharp...

this list is infinite....

Money does NOT grow on trees.  It is a full day's work for many people to afford to buy this game.

You can laugh and say they are "welfare" or whatever or say "too bad"... but that's reality.

Many, including me, even fully upgraded their rig to better support this game.

It is mever acceptable for a product that you purchase to NOT work as soon as you get it.

People that expect their purchases to function are not "cry babies"... they are consumers with the given right to expect results.

This isn't results. This is a joke.  Period.  There is no rational situation that you can come up with that would make this acceptable

No matter how much you have to adjust your story.

If there was ever a definition of cognitive dissonance, it's saying that the release on 5 March, 2013 of Sim City (5) was an overall positive experience.

Let's cease this whole discussion on "crying" and "whining". It is not the same as "criticizing". People who come here expect to have their comments taken seriously and not be called names or have their comments made fun of. Likewise, any who do like the game or support Maxis's efforts aren't necessarily beholding to anyone. Their comments are just as serious. Yes, the forum is loading up with similar type comments. That is only expected as more play the game and is nothing new. Either respond in a polite manner or move on. There's plenty more to read.  ;)

This poor launch seems to have affirmed people's fears of SimCity "5" being another Diablo III: a souless, DRM/DLC driven shadow of a beloved franchise. It certainly has for me.

But there's something to take heart in. Diablo III may have cost 60 dollars, but Torchlight II- developed by many of the original Diablo crew and capturing the spirit of the earlier, better received games- cost only $20 and it even had an offline mode. I can't say whether or not SC5 will be a financial success for EA, but I'm fairly certain it won't be seen as a success among the fanbase. That will leave a big opportunity for someone, perhaps someone tired of EA's constraints, to take up a new city sim project in the near future.
