     Dear all,

Maybe I just missed something, I do not know, but there is 1 thing that I do notice in all video's I watched till now from the beta-players.

The fact that everyone builds an avenue, and then they zone it with the Commercial (Blue) zones?

    Why do they do that?

    Sorry for the spam!

Avenues allow for more traffic. More traffic means more people buying things and more deliveries from industry being made at one time. A high density road is still only 4 lanes wide. A high density avenue is 6 lanes wide and can be upgraded for use with street cars. Street cars and buses are for getting people to/from work and for transporting tourists.

If your city's focus is on industry, I do not see why you would need more than just a main street with an avenue.

If your city's focus is on commercial/residential, you will need the added ability to handle traffic for casinos, technology industry (maybe), trade, and education.

I am thinking that simply using avenues as the "backbone" of the core infrastructure of your city might be best, such as a huge plus-size or plus sign with a box shape. All the "internal" connections and division of space would be done via roads.

Simple really, in order to get commercial working really well what you need are good transport connections, the bigger the better. If you want to get your sims to work they need to drive, take the subway or go by train, an avenue through the centre of a commercial district will promote good transport levels, after all you need to get delivery trucks in and out, stock needs to move and above all the sims need to be able to get to the shops to spend their hard earned simoulians, on some of my cities i've got avenues around my commercial centres and they grow like stink i simply cant keep up with the demand sometimes, besure you road them as well put in busses and subways to take the pressure off congestion.

Take a look at some real cities you will find shopping centres always sited around large transport hubs, use these as the inspriation in building your own cities.

Everyone wants huge skyscrapers, so they build avenues.  If you are going to make a NYC Wall Street type city then use the avenues, otherwise for like Barnes and Noble, and Auto Malls (Well maybe even these need avenues, most auto malls in the bay area are avenues), and shopping centers use roads.

You are probably seeing everyone use Avenues because the maps are so tiny that you are forced to go tall and not wide.  This game lacks a lot of freedoms unfortunately.

You can build high-density streets and get the same size buildings as you'll get on a high-density avenue. An avenue can hold more traffic however.
