Thank you all for your kind and encouraging comments, I really appreciate them.

Take comfort in knowing the region has been sent to a number of folks and it's possible they will build on it...and maybe post their cities here.  I see no reason why, given that I can't keep the CJ up myself, others can't.  Could be an interesting experiment in communal building!

Time will tell.  In the mean time, thanks again for all your words of praise and encouragment.  Who knows...when this busy time slows down, if it slows down, I may be able to return to this CJ.  I just don't want to string along anyone's hopes, least of all my own.

And, I'll be checking back as often as I can, to see what happens from here and to answer folks.

Oh, I'm sad to hear that this CJ is going. It was so interesting and I liked following the story. Sorry to hear about the lose.

    Hi folks-

I have a small break in my RL work schedule, enough to spend some time checking around Simtropolis for an hour or so, checking up on my various areas of personal interest, of which, of course, this semi-abandoned CJ is one.

Good news is: I have been able to successfully email the entire region map to 3 people now!  Hopefully they are building on it and will share thier visions for this region with us here...or at least post a link to a place where we can see what they are doing?  I certainly hope hope so, but my sharing the region is not contingent with publicly sharing what you do with it.

Still, being unable to follow through on my own, and having spent quite some considerable time terraforming the region, I was hoping someone (anyone) would post what they do with the region here.  One can dream, eh?

    Micah-

It might interest you to know I recently got an email from Molly, who is, if you remember, the star of this CJ

You may (or may not) remember that last I heard from her, she was living in NYC, trying to be a lawyer, but falling out of love with her chosen profession and the firm she was working for.

Well, that was many months ago, but she recently emailed me with some astounding news, which I will share with you here:

    LD-

I know you are never going to believe this, but I have quit my job.  It's a bit of a long story, but I think you know why.  The firm has been downsizing for a while and it was just a matter of time before I got the axe and you know I have not been happy here for a while, so I finally bit the bullet and decided to make the decision for them.

I was careful about how I severed the ties that bind...I don't want to burn any bridges behind me or lose a valuable reference, should I ever decide to return to law as a profession.  God knows I worked hard enough to be become a lawyer!  But I have to admit, I am disallusioned and don't see now any time in the future when I will be returning to law as a way to make my living.

I'm not sure where I am going to go from here. NYC seems such a wasteland to me and I long for my Montana home, but I know there is no going back.  I've been careful with my money and so have enough saved to take my time planning my next move.

I know you might think I am crazy but I am thinking about Alaska.  One of my last clients, a surprisingly young woman (she was 28!) was the mayor of this very small rural town in Southeast Alaska, a town called Whale's Bay.  Her town was trying to bring suit against the mining interests that were, in her opinion, detrimental to the hefty tourist trade the town drew every year due to the whale migration going right past the town's seaside doorstep.  When it became clear that the Endangered Species Act may become involved, the case was taken from me and handed to a more senior member of the firm, but I got to know this woman, Sandy Ruston, in the meantime and I have to say...some of the stories she told me about life in Whale's Bay got my curiousity up big time.  Sounds a lot like Montana, but with a seaport, of my grandfather's days.

I have some time to make up my mind what to do and where to go next.  And I don't want to run off half-crazy at the first available next good thing.  But Whale's Bay is taking up a lot of my time and thought.  Sandy says there are other towns and lots of wildnerness areas close by.  I don't know what I'd do for money, but I am thinking I may go check the area out.  The call of the area is undeniable to me, especially the timing of meeting Sandy as my own position here was beginning to, hmm, decay.  There is something in me that think's it's all kismet, fate, destiny.  One door closes just as another door opens.

    You know what I mean.

I know I've been out of touch a lot, but will try hard to be better.

I hope to hear from you soon.

    Molly

    Well.

It's been a couple of months, but I think, not sure, I am willing and able to uptake this journal once again.  Not certain...but semi-certain.

It's been 4 months since last I checked into this site or played SC at all...life just kinda got away from me.  Work got extremely crazy then died out completely.  I was working my behind off up to the end of February, then found myself twiddling my thumbs for almost the entire month of March.  Not quite actually  "twiddling my thumbs"...I joined an online dating service and spent a  LOT of time emailing other lonely souls such as myself.  Met a couple of nice guys but, well, time will tell.

Also had a family crisis to deal with in March, as my grandma died at the age of 93 (peacefully, in her sleep).  My mother, who had been my grandma's caretaker for over 30 years, kinda fell apart when her mom died and my sister and I have been trying to help our mom deal with this huge change in her life.  Without grandma's social security income to help my mom pay the rent, mom may have to move from the house she has lived in for the past 37 years and relocate to rural Idaho, where her brother owns a home and property.  There are still family members living at my mom's house, but they do not contribute...so the situation is a bit tense.

I took some time, before posting this, to cruise around the new site and check in with a few of my fav CJ's, to see what's up and get an idea of what has happened over the past 3 months of my abscence.  Looks like quit a bit.  The work on ploppable water looks to have made some very significant advances, which I am very pleased to see.  Part of my exiting this CJ 3 months ago was my frustration in creating natural appearing watercourses across my map.

It will take me a little time to catch myself up to what is going on both  here on this site and with SC4, so I am hoping you will be patient with me.  I want to get back to my map and my CJ story, and hopefully I have not the small audience I had 3 months ago.  If so, then I guess I just have to work hard to regain a new audience.

Good to have you back... I've not been here for a very long time either, just because I kept losing interest in SC4 after a while. I've viewed your pictures here, and I must say I'm very impressed, especially with the map.. I love the delta! When this CJ will be alive again I will surely keep an eye on it..! Good luck!!! 9.gif

Well, it's encouraging to see some folks are still paying attention. I am off to learn more about the new plobbale water modes that seem to be avavilable...my region was not yet ready to be built on, in my mind...I still needed some natural watercourses. It was always my intent to use the time between beginning building on my map as a time to develope the backstory and to do the "fine-tuning" on the map in regards to creeks, steams, rivers, etc. Anyone who has viewed my region and/or the individual maps in the region must surely understand how very challenging this terrain is.

So, hang tough while I figure out how to create a network of water across my region...

    Vandy-

Thank you for the links you posted, I appreciate them. Under the "Plopable Water -- Examples and Continued Development" link I found a post by Aleking dated February of last year that depicts almost exactly the effect I am trying to achive. The post is early in the thread, on the first page, as I recall. I have PM'd Aleking asking him how he achived the results he did...does anyone know if he is still active on this site or am I wasting my time? Has anyone else been able to recreate his results?

Everyone else who has posted...thank you for the encouragement. This ploppable water issue is the single greatest obstacle I am facing right now, before continueing my CJ. Damn I miss having a water tool! Are you listening Maxis? How cool would it be to be able to "paint" above sea level water across our landscapes? We used to be able to, in earlier versions of the game...

Jeez, hard to believe it's been 4 1/2 months since last I posted on this CJ. As before RL got in the way of play time. I experimented with the ploppable water stuff I was able to find by was not able to get it to work the way I wanted. So frustrating!

As much as I hate to do it, I am thinking about continueing with the developement of my region, despite lacking lakes and streams. I'll save a copy of it as it currently exists, so if I ever do figure out the above ground water system (or if Maxis provides one) I can go back and add water, but truth is I have so much time and energy invested in this region that I really don't want to abandon it. I've been waiting for a year or more to achieve above ground water and it's still not available, so I begin to think it's time to bite the bullet and proceed without it.

The Simtropolis site has changed once again since I last posted in early April and while I was able to find my CJ, I'm not having much success finding much else. I'll get used to it, I'm sure.

Well, I'm off to my region to start some actual building. While my RL is still semi-busy right now, updates will be slow for a while, but I am heading into my slow season, so the pace will pick up as my work load drops off. I hope to be able to post a graphic update within a few days, so stay tuned...

I am so encouraged by you all...

I spent several hours last night beginning the building of a small town in Whales Bay. It is as you would expect for a small town...mostly industry and residential, with a tad of commercial. Tonight I am going to try to build a road network that will tie the various cities in my region together.

Again, I hope to have graphic updates within the next few days.

    Wow.

Hard to believe it's been 2 1/2 years since I last posted here, so much has happened, not much of it good. As a designer/drafter of single family homes, I had been stuggling mightily to keep my head above water financially and lost that battle in July of last year. I have since been unemployed and because I had been self employed, had no recourse to unemployement benifits. Too say life has been tough these past 8 months is to put things rather mildly. I am now couch-camping at the home of a good friend (for the past 8 months...a very GOOD friend) and have been able to move my personal belongings from a public storage facility that was costing me big bucks every month to another friend's (free) basement. That move happened first of February, with my uncle loaning me the money to pay off my storage space and rent a truck, and with the help of unpaid buddies who volunteered to be my moving crew. During the move I was able to grab some of the winter clothing I had put into storage (it was July when I stored everything and in my optimism I believed it would be short-term) along with a couple of the game CD's I had not played for while, including SC4. I had already lost my broadband internet connection, so I grabbed games I knew I could play without having an internet connection.

So, I have been playing SC4 quite a bit in the past 6 weeks and my Apocrypha region is the only region I have been playing. I have been playing the one I started developing without the hoped for creeks, streams, and lakes...the one I started in Whale's Bay 2 1/2 years ago. When I revisited the region I wasn't really happy with what I had done in Whale's Bay, so I started anew in Glacier Valley. I used no mods or plops or cheats, just built using game tools.

And I didn't build a bad city, it's just that it's not the city I had always envisioned for this area that I spent so much time and effort creating. Thankfully, I had saved a completely pristine copy of Apocrypha as it was at the final God Mode terraforming. And, being unemployed, I may now have time to pursue my wants in continueing to develope this region as I originally intended. I regained my inernet access last week and found, much to my surprise, that folks are still (!) interested in this region.

So, I am making a commitment, once again, to try to develope this region per my original ideas. I am thinking I will use my already built on region as a practice ground. I see a lot of progress has been made with above ground water and am anxious to try them out, but I want to save my pristine region until I have mastered the tools. And...I don't want to inflate anyone's hopes that I will be able to give this CJ my total attention just because I am unemployed. My first order of business is to find a job, ANY job. This past winter was extremely depressing in that even though I applied for probably 10-15 jobs a week, I never even got an interview. These past two weeks, I have been getting the interviews and they have gone well, so I may have to once again abandon this CJ to the RL needs of working 2-3 jobs in order to reclaim financial stability. But, I am motivated once again, and feel the tools I seek, and the help I need, are out there now, whereas they weren't over two years ago.

Folks will once again need to be patient with me. My internet connection is now a slow wifi connection, so I don't know yet if I can post images of my region or my cities...I haven't yet tried. It may be that this CJ will be text only until I can afford to pay for a broadband connection again. I have also forgotten a lot of what I learned 3 years ago, although I have extensive notes in my files and my files are here with me, not in storage in my friend's basement, so hopefully I can get back up to speed semi-quickly.

So my first ask is, does anyone want to see the cities I have developed in this region over the past few weeks? They are built without any ploppables at all, total game engine all the way and I am not 100% happy with them, but I am not totally unhappy with them either. Or, shall this CJ remain true to the original vision and try to pick up where I left off?

    Lora/LD

So im going to tell you not to double post. lol.

But BEAUTIFUL region! It looks great.

Whats it called, and where can i get it?

And to answer your question. Yes, i would like to see how this region has moved in the last 2 and 1/2 years.

The region is called Apocrypha and you can get it from me.  It is way too large a file to upload to the STEX here, so I just posted a screenshot of the region and instructions to email me for the zip files.  There are 5 zip files ranging in size from 10MB to about 4MB, so you either need a very large email inbox or else the files need to be cleared from your email box as they arrive and before the next file can be sent.  I am currently in the process of sending the region to another player who requested it last summer (and who I just this weekend got back to) and he is having to empty his email inbox after each file is sent.  I'd be more than happy to share the region with you, also, so let me know.  Please be advised that there are several important dependencies I used in creating my region and that if you don't install them ahead of time, the region will not display as you have seen it here.

As for showing you all what I have done with this region over the past couple of weeks, I'd be glad to but first I will have to remember (or relearn) how to capture images from Region Census, resize for correct pixel limits (800x600?), send over to Image Shack, then insert into this journal.  So please be patient...I'm no spring chicken and my memory isn't what it used to be!

There's no need to email large files to people over and over.  Just upload it to a free online storage site and send people the download link whenever you want to share it.  Here are three that are well-known:

    MediaFire

    ADrive

Hope this helps take the strain off people's inboxes 1.gif

Ok folks, here we go, fingers crossed this will be my first true update of this CJ in over 2 1/2 years.  I went back and read my notes, read the tutorials, and I think (hope) I am now ready to post my first new images of a built Apocrypha.  If I continue to build in this version of the region, I may peel this off into a seperate CJ, as this is NOT the way I had originally envisioned developing this region over 3 years ago when I created it.

Ok, lets see if this works.  If it does, this is the overview of the entire region as it stands today:

    50215946.jpg

Yay!  It worked!!!  That wasn't hard at all!

Ok, if you look close you can see some substantial development in the upper left corner of the region, in what are the Glacier Valley and Two Rivers city tiles.  I have also begun development in both of those large city tiles neraby tile, Upper Glacier and White River.  If you look at the lower right hand corner and then scan to the left and upwards, you can see that I have been working on developing a region-wide transportation system, comprised right now only of highways, with some avenues laid down in areas I plan to develope as low density residential/commercial.  Almost all of the city tiles the highways run through are completely uninhabited at this point, but I'll get to that later.

    Fisrt, my next pic, of Glacier Valley;

    cityglaciervalley.jpg

Ok, now this is what happens to a beautifully terraformed region when one is bored out of one's mind and drinks too much wine late at night.  No thought or planning went into this city at all.  I just starting plopping down zones and streets and let it grow.  This is challenging terrain and because I had not played for several years, I really hadn't much of a clue as to what I was doing as I built.  As a result, this city is pretty much of a mess.  I ran out of money very early, so used a money cheat, which helped me only to make the mess worse.  I used only game tools other than that and the results were, hmm, not pretty.  Still, the city grew and folks were happy, so I kept going.

The city grew out of it's tile into Two Rivers pretty quickly.  The road links to Two Rivers are at the lower right hand side of the tile.  They are highways now but were streets and then roads, but more on that later.  The city then grew up the valley into Upper Glacier, at the top right.  The valley kinda makes a "Y" up in that corner.  Upper Glacier is the right side of the "Y", and Sim Nation is off to the left side of the "Y".  The city also grew from Glacier Bay, where the bridge is now (a recent addition) up through the gap in the mountains, and into some of the higher plateaus in the mountains behind the bay.  Notice that the terrain to the left of the bridge has been almost completely flattened from what it was originally (page back through this CJ to see this tile before I started building on it).  I had a seaport here and a thriving industrial area, but they wer both starving for transportation links, so I bulldozed the entire area and created nearly shear cliffs so I could run my highway and, later, a rail line along this little shelf of land.  That is, if I continue to build in this version of Apocrypha.  I will show close ups of the various city tiles in later updates, but for tonite, I'm just doing a quick run through.

    Next is Two Rivers:

    citytworivers.jpg

This is a good sized city of about 100K folks with a small inetnational airport and a major league baseball team.  Or, at least it was before I ran the highways through it.  The rivers are both navigable by ocean going vessels, but I don't plan to build seaports here.  I need to pull out my CJ notes to keep myself oriented as we go along, to let you understand how the various tiles connect to each other.  Ok, Glacier Valley is north and you can see a little bit of Glacier Bay at the very top of the tile.  The river running through the center of the tile is the White River and the second river is the Placid River, which is nor navigable by ocen vessels (sorry).  The highway that runs off to the south/bottom of the tile goes to Butterfly Island and the North Passage, a navigable channel that runs arcoss the north end of the extensive archipeligo of the Moose River delta.  It also connects to an east/west highway on Butterfly Island that connects this tile with Meyer's Peak, a large city tile to the west.  There is another small city tile, Overlook, to the northwest.  So far there are no road connections or development there.

Next up, we go back to the Glacier River watershed valleys:

    cityupperglaciervalley.jpg

This is Upper Glacier Valley, a primarily rural/farming area.  The highway runs through the valley at the top of the tile but has not yet been extended into Uplands, the large city tile to the west.  There is a road connection to the south, to White River Valley, which we see here:

    citywhiterivervalley.jpg

The farming developement seen here is actually an extension of Two Rivers.  The road connection from Upper Glacier Valley (north) has not been connected by any development yet.  Two Rivers is east from here, Overlook is south, and Upper Placid is west.  This tile is connected by roads to all it's neighboring tiles.  Overlook has only road connections in it so far, no development at all, so I am going to skip it tonite and move one tile further south to Meyer's Peak:

    citymeyerspeak.jpg

Just highways and bridges here, oh and a tunnel at the far right.  The water's edge along the line of the mainland's end is a continuation of the North Passage.  The highway at left connects to Butterfly Island, the one at the top to Overlook, and the one at right to Delta.  To the south is Island Passage, but it is so far comepletely undeveloped.  Also abutting this tile are Upper Placid to the northwest (undeveloped), and Cee Harbor, to the southwest corner (also undeveloped).

    citydelta.jpg

This is Delta, a large city tile still undeveloped except for highways.  I envision a semi major city to be built here someday as there are 3 ocean going vessel navigable channels through the archipaleago that converge here at the mouth of the Moose River.  Knowing a little bit about how land forms are actually formed over time helped me a lot with terraforming this tile and in fact the entire region.  I expect most of the smaller islands in this tile, which are actually little more than sandbars, will never be built on.  The highway running north along the river goes to Dog Leg Junction, which is so far undeveloped.  At the left of the page, west is to Meyer's Peak (SW) and Overlook (NW).  At the bottom of the page, SW is to Cee Island, SE is to North Trader's Island.  To the right side of the page, east, is Pine Flats.  All city tiles north of here are completely undeveloped.

    citypineflats.jpg

This is Pine Flats, nothing but a highway and a bridge.  That is the Pine River running west to east (or east to west, more precisely).  I would have built highway continueing into the circular depression in the center of the tile, but my money cheat doesn't kick in untill folks move in, so I will have to either find a different cheat or wait until I develope this region to develope it further.  Given it's close proximity to Delta, I imagine this will be a very large and thriving suburban area someday.  Highway coonects to Moose River in the north, which I also envision as becoming a major population center but which is so far undeveloped.  To the south, highway connects to Nelly's Spine, one of my fav tiles in this region.  I just love the name...even if I did make it up myself.

    citynellysspine.jpg

I plan to leave the semi-obvious "spine" of this tile as undeveloped as possible, not only because it is difficult terrain but also because at this area of the region there is lots of flat ground to build on, as we are nearing the mouth of the huge delta/archipelaego that in many ways defines this entire region.  The cloverleaf is going to be replaced with a "t" interchange and the peninsular island south of it will be almost exclusively low density residential.  The lower east/west highway goes over to Krabinski Sound, the south highway goes to Whale's Bay, the upper east/west highway goes to North Trader's Island.  The waterway to the left is known as "Torturous Passage", a deep but narrow channel that eventually leads to the mouth of the Moose River.   Now west to Krabinski Sound:

    citykrabinskisound.jpg

I actually started to develope this region 3 years ago when I started working on Whale's Bay, but I obliterated the extremely small city when I decided to restart this region a few weeks ago.  You can see the "scars" of old streets/roads down in the left hand corner.  This is intended to eventually become a "bedroom community" to both Nelly's Spins and Whale's Bay, which is why I have laid out major avenues here rather than highways.  The highways at the right side of the screen lead to Nelly's Spine (upper right) and to Whale's Bay (lower right).  The highway thats goes north goes to North Trader's Island.  The large land mass at the upper right is all Trader's Island, it's just that we can't see it's seperation from the mainland (Torturous Passage) in this tile.  I'm not certain, but I think all the waterways here are navigable by ocean going vessels.

    And, lastly, Whale's Bay:

    citywhalesbay.jpg

And so we come to the bottom right hand corner of the region, perhaps FINALLY for those of you who may have been bored by this long overdue update and it's lack of juicy closeup eye candy shots.    The mountains here are the tail end of Nelly's Spine and the highway heading off north go there.  The highway going west goes to Krabinski Sound.  The one going east goes to Sim Nation.  I had developed a small city here 3 years ago but obliterated it when I decided to start over a few weeks ago.  The scars of that previous city can still be seen if you look closely.  This will probably never be a pretty city.  Being at the bottom corner of the region, I have the opportunity to create an industrial haven here which will allow most of it's associated pollution to go both off map and off region, so that is what I am going to do.  This is going to probably develope into the single largest industrial city in the entire region.  I feel sorry for the whales that cavort here daily, but these waters arelikely to become a sewer in the future.  I am not aware of any way to develope industry withour creating pollution, so if anyone can clue me in, I'd appreciate it.

Ok, so that's the end of my pics and almost the end of this long overdue update.

A word about city building philosophy.

I like to plan my cities out in advance, as much as possible.  I also like to build living cities that work well within the game engine, as much as possible.  Sometimes, in fact most of the time, those two desires turn out to be competing interests.  So I use money cheats and build a huge amount of my cities while in pause mode.  Then I let the city run and see if my sims like what I have done.  If not, I pause and fix.

As the resident of a large city (Seattle) that is struggling with RL infrastructure upgrade issues, I try to avoid rezoning huge areas of my cities in SC4 to build much needed infrastructure.  Too many folks displaced, too much disruption to city life, businesses, and industry.  So while I started this region out of incredible boredom a few weeks ago, the two cities I grew in Glacier and Two Rivers quickly led me back to trying to figure out an overall regional transportation plan.  If you build it, they will come.  Truth is, they will come anyway in this game, especially if you use money cheats.

So I am a little torn about how to continue to approach this version of my region.  What I really want to do is create a fully integrated transportation system all across the region, then develope the zones that fit with the system I have developed and see if it works.  That's why, when I started developing the highway system, I started with Whale's Bay.  That will be the industrial hub from which all commerce will flow in this region.  Delta will be an adjunct to Whale's Bay, as will Glacier Valley.  But without an ability to transport goods from the interior of the region out to the coasts, this region will never thrive.  And I want these transportation systems in place before I lay the first zoned tile.

    Comments, ideas, suggestions, criticisms...all welcome.

Great region! Glad to hear you are still finding time to treat yourself... ie; playing simcity. Your situation is becoming more and more common... I wish you the best of luck.

As far as the trans. network goes... I have constructed many cities in this fashion. In my experience though, it can be a paradox. It's hard not to plan out and build your trans. network first. However I often end up with long stretches 9of highway that go unused... or sometimes routes that only see bus traffic(which isn't all that bad). I think it is vital to at least think about your network, especially if planning a large region with many sims. I would suggest leaving yourself some flexibility with the situation... aybe some options for re-routing if needed. I look forward to seeing your progress!

Nice! What a great map! Are you planning to use a modern water or terrain mod? What level density are you hoping to have? I think this is a great way to bring it back to life. Welcome back to the CJs.
