Apocrypha

Hello!

And welcome fellow SC4 fans and CJ'ers.  This is my first CJ and so, because I have never done this before, I am going to be counting on the help of everyone who knows how to do this better than I do.

The region I have chosen to develop into Apocrypha is a map created by Flamesrock which is named Katalla and which I downloaded from the STEX.  I think this is one of the best maps ever created because of its extremely varied, and challenging, terrain.  It is modeled after an actual river delta in Alaska, according to the description in the STEX.  This CJ will be my second use of this region.

Ok (taking a deep breath), now I am going to attempt to post my first image to ST from an off site host (ImageShack).  Ive read the tutorials and the Image Shack web site, so hopefully this will work without too much hair-pulling involved on my part!

Apocrypha 1.00.00:

Well, it doesn't seem to be working.  I guess I need someone to walk me through this.  How embarrassing.

Well, just incase anyone actually reads this and wants to know what this CJ is going to be about, I'll continue anyway.  Forge ahead!  Don't let adversity get you down!

So, my plan is this.  I am going to spend some time doing some manual God Mode terraforming of the map because I am liking CycleDogg and Jeronij's new snow mod a lot...and the terrain in this map isn't quite high enough.  This is rugged country (Alaska), and so a lot of the map wants to be unbuildable mountain wilderness.  I plan to use CycleDogg's Columbus Mods throughout the CJ, and his trees.

Once the God Mode terraforming is complete to my satisfaction, I'll be going city to city making heavy use of plopable water and PEG's stream kit tools, to create natural above sea level water features like waterfalls, rivers, and lakes.  If you could see the map (sigh, so sorry), you would be able to see that it presents excellent opportunities for extensive watersheds.

Once all the God and Mayor mode terraforming is complete, I'll start to build small communities.  It will be sometime along this point in the evolution of the CJ that an actual story line will begin.  Besides being a RL architect with a strong interest in city development, I am also an amateur writer, and being of Irish descent, I've been told I'm a very good storyteller.  My story will center around a young girl living in Apocrypha.

After the region's communities are built and the story phase has begun, I will begin to destroy Apocrypha slowly, through a series of natural disasters related to global warming and general degradation of the ecosphere.  This will all be told in our heroine's voice.  Eventually, the Earth will again stabilize herself and what is left of the world's population will begin the process of rebuilding.  By this time in the CJ, the original map will be much changed.  It is at this point that the true building phase of Apocrypha will begin.  I am going to try to create an Ecotopia.

This is going to be, as you can imagine, a fairly long-term project.  Along the way I hope to learn how to create textures, BATs, LOTs, and MODs, because the region I envision as my Ecotopia is currently unable to be built, even with the massive resources available on this site.

I hope you will all join me on this adventure....and help me along the way.

Now, can anyone tell me how to post a pic of my region?  I followed the tutorials to the letter (I printed them all out!), and still no luck.  I think my biggest problem is, when I click on the insert image button at the top of this post, the Insert Image dialog box that pops up displays a message in the upper left corner saying gallery has been disabled.  Well, it said that last I I checked, now it tells me the area I am trying to access has been forbidden.

Help?

Lora/LD

I can help you upload images on this site, but I have no experience with the other sites you mention.

And, when you get to the BAT's and Lot Editor, please call on me, I can be of assistance.  I have some knowledge, and plenty of resources.

    Thank you,  Tungston!

I tried again today to upload my region to this CJ and failed once again...so frustrating!

Sloppet, I tried the method you suggested and it didn't work, but thank you for trying, I appreciate it.

The thing is, when I click on the Insert Image icon in the toolbar above, when the dialog box opens there is a text message at the upper left corner saying the gallery has been disabled.  All the buttons in the dialog box seem to work and I am able to see a preview of my upload, but when I click on Insert Image  at the bottom of the dialog box, the dialog box closes and no image is inserted into my post.

Anyone...please help!  I don't want to start terraforming my region until folks have a chance to see what it looks like prior to terraforming, and I am REALLY itching to get started.

    Hello Idvger. Welcome to simtroplis44.gif

Try this link . It's basically a way to host pictures on Imageshack. It's fairly straight forward and should work no problem. This link is a tutorial. This is the tutorial I used to start my picture hosting.44.gif I hope this helps. PM me if it doesn't. 29.gif Take care and good luck9.gif
    EDIT>
Hello again. The tutorial is unfortunately missing some helpful pictures. So I'll post one myself for you.
In imageshack click on Browse> Get your picture off your computer> Then click on Host It>Another page pops up> Look for Direct Link. It should be the last link to choose from> Then go to Your CJ> Click on the Letter Button (next to the Printer Button at the end)> then follow the steps in the picture below: PS. Don't worry about the This gallery has been disabled.

    I hope this helps 44.gif

I will go through the steps to upload on this site, some you have done, I am sure:
Click the picture  (insert image ) button
    Once the widow opens
    Click the browse button
locate your file on your hard drive
select the file by clicking on it
    then click the open button
    click the upload button
[ your image should now be visable ]
    now the insert button

that should be all, if not... I'm around

EDIT: the more I read your post, the more I think you have done everything right.
A firewall would not keep you from uploading, or downloading either, it just keeps snoopers out.

    Hello again!

Well, still no luck with getting an image to upload to my post, please bear with me as I try to figure this problem out.

Tungston, I have done every step of what you suggest, to no avail.  I am grateful for your suggestions.

Sorchin, I have read that tutorial 20 times in the past 2 days and even with your new screen shots that match my own, and following ALL instructions, my image will not load to my post.  Still, thak you for paying attention and trying to help, I really appreciate it.

Sloppet, yes this is a CJ, but it is admittedly off to a rocky start.  Patience is a virtue.  I'm sorry if you feel I may be abusing this space with my newbie issues, but we were all newbies at one point or another.  Constructive critisism is always welcomed.

So, to keep things moving forward, I am going to have to violate one of Mr. Cinatit's suggestions for writing a successful CJ and post a link to my region's image over on ImageShack rather than pasting that image directly into my post:

    <ahttp://img293.imageshack.us/img293/9915/apocrophabase8vf.jpg align=baseline>

I hope any of you who read this CJ will use the link to see the naked region I am going to begin terraforming.  I will continue to work on resolving my inability to upload my images directly to my posts and will hoepfully be able to post pics directly soon.  Bear with me, please...

I am going to jump ahead and temporarily post this image for Ldvger, until the internet gets it's act in order, and it's duck in a row.

picture has been edited into Ldvger's post - and thanks very much. Mr. C.

I really like that overly complicated river delta there...Hope you can get this straightened out, LD. I'm already kind of intrigued to see what kind of terraformings you have in mind here...

    Hello folks!

Update number one underway!  This evening I started terraforming my region in the God Mode, raising the terrain around the hills and mountains to create a more rugged landscape, one that I thought would be a little more in line with Pacific Coastal Alaska.  I also smoothed out some of the mountainous valleys a bit, to make building easier down the line and also to create what I hope will be realistic transitions between sea level water and ploppable water.

I started in the far northwest corner of the region, which is a large city tile and was very mountainous to begin with.  There was a nice valley running from NE to SW that ended in a shallow bay.  One of the first things I did was deepend the bay so that this corner of the region would have future access to a deep water port.  Then I raised hills along the existing mountain crests, creating rockier and steeper terrian.

As you may know, I am having trouble posting my map images directly to ST.  Tungston has volunteered to host my pics for me and post them to this thread, but we are still trying to figure out the best way to do that.  I am hoping he can edit my posts and insert the images in the right places for me, but if not, you may have to scroll down to find his post, then scroll back to read my text.  I know it's a drag and I am working furiously to resolve this problem and hopefully will have things straightened out soon, but I'm hoping you will all bear with me until then.

So, that being said, I had to do some terraforming of the smaller cities abutting my large city tile, so that things would match in the overall region view.  Once I got all the edges reconciled properly, this is what the region now looks like:

    align=baseline>

Once I had the large city terraformed the way I wanted it, it was time to forest it.  I am using Cycledogg's Columbus Mods here.  I forested the city tile originally using the wet brush but it looked very sparsely vegetated to me for coastal Alaska, so I changed to the wetter brush and did it all over again.  Looks better now, I think, although still a bit thin.  The four next shots are of the completed city tile in this order: NW corner, NE corner, SE corner, SW corner, and center of the region:

The last image in this update is a close up of a small pod of whales (Orcsas?) frolicking in the newly deepened waters of the valley's bay.

    Image 0107

I need a name for this large city tile, can you help?  There will be a seaport here and a modest city, with a lot of sparsley populated rual areas.

In other news, I got an email from a friend of mine in New York City.  Seems big changes are possibly happening in her life...I'll share snippets of her email with you tomorrow.

    Ok, Tungston, do your magic!

I think you hace done great terraforming there let me give you
one tip for those mountains since you have a great region and I think
that those peaks seem a little rounded off, if you are in god mode click on
the cliff tool but then hit shift+1or2 to make it real small then you can
use it to add some contour lines running up the peaks to give them that
jagged rocky mountain look, just and idea

    Hello folks!

Well, no pics to post this time.  My plan is to post pics every other update, and story every other update, at least during these early stages of the Journal.

First off, my deepest and most sincere thanks to both Tungston and Mr. Cinatit for helping me get my images into my posts during this (hopefully temporary) time of being unable to do so on my own.  You guys are the greatest!

Rabid Tangerine, thank you for visiting.  My overall plan is to make the terrain rougher and higher while in God Mode, then use lots of plobbale water in mayor mode to build what I hope will be a realistic and natural watershed system.  I'm trying to God Mode the terrain with that in mind.  I hope you check back every few days to watch my progress!

Aleking, thank you for visiting and I agree my mountains are all a little soft-topped in appearance.  I was thinking about that this evening while walking home from the store...they dont look like mountains so much as piles of melted white-topped grey ice cream.  And while I have never been to Alaska, I know the moutains here in Washington have much more strongly defined shapes than those I terraformed as Alaskan.  I will use you suggestion and see if I can get a more realistic look going.  I haven't done a lot of terraforming in SC4, although I did extensive terraforming in earlie versions of the game, so I am still getting used to the tools.  I hope you check back to see how I am progressing!

Tonite is a story line update.  As I stated in my introduction, the story is going to revolve around a young woman's experiences living in Apocryhpa.  So tonite I am going to invent our heroine.

I first met Molly MacCallahan in a bar in Weiser, Idaho during the Old Time Fiddler's Festival, held there each year in early June.  I had recently moved to the Pacific Northwest from Southern California and found a job as a bartender in a busy suburban tavern.  I was recovering from the break up of a long term relationship, feeling friendless and a long way from home, so when some co-workers invited me to join them for a long weekend trip to the Fiddler's Festival, I accepted gratefully.  Problem was, I had little interest, at the time, in folk or country music, so while my co-workers spent thier weekend in the local high school gymnasium, listening to world-class fiddlers vie to be acclaimed The Best, I spent my days (and evenings) hanging out in the local bars, drinking.

It was Friday night when Molly bumped into me, very literally.  The bar was extremely crowded and I was staring blankly at the mirror over the bar, lost in thought, when I was badly jostled by someone, causing me to knock over my bottle of beer, the contents of which proceeded to spill across the bar and into my own lap.  I jumped up and back to try to avoid the worst of the spill and was immediately shoved back up against the bar by the people behind me.  The front of my shirt and jeans soaked up the spilt beer while I was held immobile by the crush of people behind me.  I was able to get my hands on the bar rail and push back, hard.  I heard a sound like a cross between a grunt and a squeal, and as I turned to face  the originator of the sound I came face to face with Molly MacCallahan for the very first time.

She had turned to face me when I pushed against her, so we had a few seconds to look into each other's eyes and take the measure of each other.  She has never told me what her first impression of me was, but I saw a tall young woman, maybe 17-18 years old, heavy straight blond hair cut to her shoulders, blue eyes.  Her hair was disheveled slightly, her eyes a bit cloudy from drink, but my immediate inpression was of tremendous stature and dignity.  Something in the way she was standing, twisted around to face me, swaying slightly...maybe it was her posture, so upright and graceful, even in drunkeness,  Maybe it was the look in her eyes, so direct and unapologetic.  To this day, I dont know what it was in that chance encounter that made me feel drawn to her, but drawn I was.

After a few seconds of looking at each other, she raised the bottle of beer she held in her left hand up and offered me a toast, explaining to me I was just trying to find the bathroom.  I grabbed my empty bottle off the bar and clinked bottles with her and told her I need to go, too.  Let's make it an adventure.  She studied me another second or two while she raised her beer to her mouth and drank, then she clinked her bottle against mine and said Here's to adventures.  Let's go.  Then she grabbed my hand and started leading me through the crowd towards the back of the bar, where, presumably, the bathrooms were.

What's your name? she asked me while we pin-balled our way along.

Eldee I replied.  She looked back over her shoulder at me and raised an eyebrow.  It's a nickname, I explained, my dad's idea of a joke.  She squeezed my hand briefly, letting me know she understood about how dads could make jokes on thier daughters, then turned her attention back to manuevering us through the crowd.

I'm Molly, she told me, but my dad calls me Mols.  She squeezed my hand again.  I heard the difference in the way she said the two names...she pronounced Molly MAW-lee, but pronounced Mols malls.  She glanced back at me and raised her eyebrow again...I squeezed her hand briefly in return.  Dads.

A deep friendship was born between us that Friday in Weiser, which continues to this day.  We've been friends for many years and while our lives have gone in very different directions, we stay in touch.  I got an email from her Monday, which I would like to share parts of with you:

    Eldee-

How goes life in Seattle?  Life here in the Big Apple is going to hell in a handbasket in a hurry.

You already know things have been rough between Rob and I for a while.  Well, I have finally come to the realization that the relationship is terminal.  Between my work for the firm and his commitments to his work, we just can't seem to make time for each other.  It's impossible...two workaholics trying to have a personal life with each other.  I don't know how to break the news to him that he just isn't the one for me.  I am hoping I can avoid the entire situation...hoping his own life and commitments will allow us to drift apart from each other without confrontation or pain.  Hey, I can dream, can't I?  I am so tired of failed relationships.

More good news.  The firm is under scrutiny by the NY Attorney General for possible conflict of interest.  The bad publicity is causing clients to leave like rats jumpimg off of a sinking ship.  Three of my clients have retained alternative counsel just this week.  And of course, the lay-offs among the junior staff have begun.  I have been told to release my own staff and so I wonder how long it will be until my boss is told to release me.  Hard to think that after all the education and work to have come this far it might end so quickly and easily.

I am surprisingly ambivelent about everything.  Maybe I am depressed, but I just can't seem to make myself care about Rob, or the firm, or even my career.  I find my thoughts drifting back to my childhood in Montana...the sky, the mountains, the lakes and streams, the birds, the stars at night.  There are no stars in the night sky here...

And I miss it, Eldee.   I never thought I would say that, but it's true.  I love the Big Apple and it's incredible dynamic, but I miss the being able to look up into the night sky and see the Big Dipper and the North Star and Orion's belt.  I miss the Northern Lights and the Milky Way.

So, can you believe this, I am thinking about leaving NYC.  The life I hoped for and worked for...it all seems to be slipping away from me.  And I find I am not terribly interested in fighting for it.  Somewhere along the way between THERE and HERE, I feel like I lost my way.  Can you understand that?  Tell me you do, Eldee, please...

Do you think I am going crazy?

    Mols

You may already have the Additional God Mode Terrain Tools by Tropod (posted by rybolton ), but it has a volcano tool that makes a craggy mountain top.  Also, I don't know if it works with with the snow caps mod.  It is in the Modding section.

    Hi Folks-

I am not feeling 100% well today and it is already late at night (or early morning, depending on point of view) where I live, so this update is going to be a bit short.

    First, responses to visitors:

Aleking, you ROCK!!! I went back into the region and cities I terraformed a few days ago and touched them up using the tools you recommended and I am way happier with the way they look.  Thank you so much for the tips, it really made a difference in the look of my region (see below).

Tungston, I have Tropod's God Mode Mod, but it is not installed in my game right now.  I plan to use the mod later....when I start destroying.

Jeronij, yes, once I start building, everything will conform to the the terrain, as much as possible.  As you noted, there isn't much flat terrain, so I don't have much choice!  I will be making extensive use of many of the custom content you have developed and made available to the public.  Good to see you here and I hope you drop by often.  I haven't been able to stop by your CJ for a couple of days, but I have subscribed to it, so I am following developments, if not commenting.  I'm truly sorry you can't/won't read the story line I am starting to work on because of the language barrier...in many ways this CJ is just an excuse for me to write a story...and I am looking for feedabck on the story as much as I am the city building.

Timotheus, the name Apocrypha, in many ways, says it all.  This is a CJ that will, eventually, confront a sort of apocolypse.. Read my first post and...stay tuned.  lad to see you visiting and I hope you return!

    Now to the update.

I took Aleking's advice and re-terraformed the areas I had worked on 2 days ago, with the following results.  The first pic will be of the entire region:

    Image U02
    <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//U02.jpg align=baseline>

Then we go around the clock of the large city tile I started with:

    Image 02.01
    <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//02.01.jpg align=baseline>

    Image 02.02

    Image 02.03

    Image 02.05
    <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//02.05.jpg align=baseline>

The clock begins in the northwest corner of the city tile and proceeds clockwise, with the last image being the centy of the city tile.

I hope folks notice how much more rugged and weathered this new lansdcape is...and, hopefully, how much more realistic it may be to a far northern location.

Tomorrow I will be posting a story update...I hope you all check back!

    Lora/LD

hey that looks much better! i love this phase of cj's, as i am really
into terraforming lately, you are doing a great job you have an
awesome region to work.  I think that the mountains look much nice
    quite a bit more realistic.

If you don't mind me offering one more suggestion (I suggested this
to Jeronij but it didn't fly) If you look at more real mountain ranges
you will notice that the same areas that are snow capped are also
pretty much barren of trees.  So maybe if you removed some trees
from the very tops of the peaks it would get that look, or you
could try just using a smaller pine at higher elevations.

Anyways you are doing a great job!!

I think it depends on the climate, although I don't know how high you mountains are, LD.  I am, right now looking out my window at a mountain of over 8,000 feet, that is totally covered with large Ponderosa Pines.  Baldy Peak here in Arizona is over 11,400 feet in elevation, and has not only Ponderosa Pine, but Blue Spruce, Douglas Fir, and Quaking Aspen, up to the top.

I like trees, so I like your mountains.

    Hello folks!

No update yesterday and no update today...RL is catching up to me and will stay with me over the weekend...such is life!

Still, I wanted to pop in and let you all know I appreciate your visiting my CJ and to try to respond to each of you, even if I can't update right now.

First of all, my sincere thanks to both Tungston and Mr. Cinatit for helping me post the images of my work to my posts...this CJ would have been dead in the water a week ago without your help.  I have finally ordered a broadband connection for myself (both for gaming and for my biz), so maybe, when that kicks in, it will solve the problems I am having posting my own images.  Until then, you two are wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.

    Now to individual replies:

Tungston, I hope you have read the newly started story line.  I would like to promise you it will be worth your while, but I have never tried my storytelling in a public forum before, so I don't really know if folks, including you, will find the story interesting or not.  Time will tell.

Aleking, tree growth is actually a factor of elevation and soil, not climate...although the two are rather obviously related.  The terrain in my region is not that high, elevationwise...it's just at very far north.  So trees would grow well above the snow line.  I live in Washington State and our mountains here have glaciers at elevations as low as 2500 feet because we are far enough north that the snow never melts, even in summer.  However, trees line the sides of the valleys the glaciers have carved.  Trees can and do grow in heavy snow areas, so while I appeciate your advice and suggestions, like Jeronij, I am going to choose to pass on it...at least for now.  I am not trying, for now, to create Alps or heavily glaciated mountain areas...just the idea of a far northern climate.

Seeleven, welcome to my CJ and I hope you come back soon to see how things progress!  I am a little unclear by your question about what the name of my snow is...but I am using the snow mod recently developed my Jeornij and Cycledogg. If I knew how to add a link to my posts I would add one here.  If you do  search for either Jeronij or Cycledogg, you should be able to find it.  If not, visit Jeronij's CJ Simtropia and look around on page 20 or so, he has a link posted there.  And no, I don't know what the elevations of my mountains are.  If anyone knows how I can find this information, I'd appreciate learning.

I am going to be buried in RL work over the weekend, so I don't anticpate being able to update for another day or two.  Hope you are all patient!

    Lora/LD

    Hello folks-

I'm back after a long weekend of working in RL and am hoping my absence hasn't created disinterest.  I was actually able to find time to terraform two more city tiles this weekend, late at night, and actually had an update I thought was ready to post Saturday evening, but when I reviewed the pictures I realized they needed more work, so I aborted the update rather than post anything that would be, hmmm...confusing.

First of all, I continue to be in debt to both Tungston and Mr. Cinatit for helping me bring my images into my CJ.  The good news is, I have finally ordered up a broadband connection for myself and should be operating with a high speed connection within the next few days, so hopefully, fingers crossed, that will solve my problems (with posting images) and these two kind gentlemen who have been so generous with thier time will be able to return to what they were were doing before I happened into this scene.  I'm sure they have better things to do with thier time and energy than assist a limping newbie, so I can't emphasize my gratitude to them both.

Sorchin, thank you for the compliment on my terraforming.  I am much happier with the way my region is looking since Aleking clued me in to the cliff tool.

As stated above, I have terraformed two new city tiles, but that was the small part of my effort over the weekend.  I figured out how to print out a copy of my region and so began the process of naming my individual city tiles, as well as some of the most prominent terrian features.  When creating names, I tried to keep in mind the actualities of the RL region I am building my CJ on...Alaska was settled by indigenous people long before white people discovered it, but once discovered, the native people's names for things were largley ignored in favor of the more pragmatic outlook of the newly arrived settlers...first the Russians, then other Asian and European cultures.

My region consists of 12 large city tiles and 16 small city tiles, so that was a lot of names to come up with.  Thankfully, 7 of the small city tiles are open ocean, so they didin't need to be named, for the time being.  Still, 21 names was a daunting task!  I hope you like the names I finally arrived at.

Below is (or will be) posted an image of my region, with each city tile numbered from 1 to 28.

The names of the city tiles correspond to the numbers on the map:

    1-Glacier Valley
    2-Upper Glacier Valley
    3-White River Valley
    4-Uplands
    5-East Uplands
    6-Dog Leg Junction
    7-Moose River
    8-Two Rivers
    9-Overlook
    10-Upper Placid
    11-Delta
    12-Pine Flats
    13-Butterly Island
    14-Meyer's Peak
    15-Cee Harbor
    16-North Trader's Island
    17-Nelly's Spine
    18-unnamed
    19-Pilot's Rocks
    20-Island Passage
    21-Krabinski Sound
    22 through 27-unnamed
    28-Whales Bay

I have named some individual features in each city tile, but we will get to them later.  However, the big open ocean spaces between Island Passgae and Krabinski Sound are the Straits of Rokobin.

Now for images of the new new city tiles I terraformed this weekend.  The first image is of Upper Glacier Valley:

The second image is of the White River Valley:

I hope you all enjoy what I have done so far and will tune in for the next udate...terraforming Uplands will be next.  It's a large city tile, so I am planning to spend several hours getting it right.

Oh and, before I forget, I got another email from Molly over the weekend.  I'll share t with you in the next day or too, as RL allows...
