The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. -- Winston Churchill

A philosopher once said, ‘When faced with untenable alternatives you should consider your imperative. War is our imperative. And if right now victory seems like an impossibility, then we have something else to reach for: revenge, payback.' -- Helena Cain, Battlestar Galactica Razor

"We'll be in too close for nukes. Same thing goes for missiles. No, this is going to be strictly a gun battle. Like two old ships on the line, slugging it out at point-blank range. I want the gun captains to do their job and start firing immediately and to continue to fire until they run out of ammo. Then, I want them to start throwing rocks." -- William Adama, Battlestar Galactica

You might've missed one of the features they introduced: Glassbox is a faith-based engine, so if you begin playing the game with a negative, cynical attitude it won't work at all. They tested must've this in the beta. Personally I think this is a great idea and helps keep the servers free of anybody who questions anything in the game.

I ...

..oh dear...

..I can't stop laughing.

Hilarious, but completely accurate. The foundation beneath this kind of marketing and sales ventures is a concept known as "I want to believe". It's a combination of variable specific triggers and patterns of user profiles underneath a set of models & inventory of methods for utilising these. At least within this industry, it's not like people do not use this elsewhere :P Let's be honest, most of our politics and modern economics rest on that syndrome.

One of the more interesting parts of that on a psychological level is how easy it is to generate user trends of "X versus Y" where the concept of criticism is very easily translated in to a state of "anti" which gets equated with disfunctional membership of group dynamics or guidance towards exclusion of those. On a slightly larger level this can also be used very efficiently to enable customers to mobilise themselves based on what is known as unreasonable participation. Maybe some people remember how years ago the drama was between communities and users of Nvidia versus ATI. That history is actually a textbook case of research for this type of marketing today :P Very handy when it is required to engage in competition between titles / products of same genre and same potential markets.

:thumb: I have been arguing with them for the past two days, trying to understand why, in the world, they want to overhaul a completely good game into online multiplayer and I truly just loved your post. I needed it.
