Windows 8 & Sim City 4: Aspect Ratio changes? = smaller game display. HELP!

I need help. I bought a new Gateway computer with Windows 8. The game runs smoothly. No issues there. However, when I start the game, the game display is smaller than my monitor. Two black stripes are on both sides and the display is square and not wide screen. My last laptop was a larger screen, but not as wide, but definitely not square.I don't know if it has to do with the new OS or if it's just some aspect ratio setting. Has anyone else had this problem and know how to fix it? Thanks.

Change the game's resolution to your monitor's resolution in Display Options. If your monitor's resolution is not listed as one of the options--actually I'll save you the trouble of checking. The game's normal supported resolutions are:

800 x 600

1024 x 768

1280 x 1024

1200 x 1600

If your monitor's resolution isn't one of those, you need to:

Right click on SC4's icon and select Properties

In the box that says "Target:" add a space to the end of the text and type -CustomResolution:enabled -r1920x1080

..except replace 1920x1080 with your monitor's resolution.

Not sure what will happen here because I don't know if the colour resolution is optional. The full syntax for that option is:

-r<h>x<v>x<r> where:

<h> is the number of horizontal pixels on the screen

<v> is the number of vertical pixels on the screen

<r> is the desired colour quality in bits -- 16 or 32 -- for a new machine use 32

HI guys

my first post here

i too have just bought a new laptop with Intel 5 and windows 8, and my sim city now runs with the black bars down the side. I have tried everything on the game to widen the screen but to no avail. Please reply in plain English for a non-techie gamer here ;o) The drivers appear to be up to date.

Hello Paddywolf, Welcome to Simtropolis! :D

First off, do not bump a thread that has been inactive for a year, start a new one instead...

And second, Did you try the '-CustomResolution:enabled -rLENGHTxWIDTHx32' shortcut code? That'll widen the game to the resolution of your monitor. (Substitute the length and width with the coordinates of your monitor. ;))

Thanks GMA!

Won't bump threads in the future

I did it and it worked, but I had to boot the game up again and set screen to default and it obviously picked up the change and sorted it. Now to see if it'll work with Strongholds, but no luck so far on that one

thanks again.
