New Technologies come to market.

55" OLED TV hits market in S. Korea.

This currently expensive set may turn the industry on its ear. This reminds me of the Betamax VS. VHS. situation many years past. The two competing technologies (OLED vs. 4K) will be fighting it out for the consumer dollar for the next ten years or so, I expect. Unlike the higher quality Betamax video tape system, I expect that the first out the gate will have a clear advantage, especially since OLED can produce flexible screens.

First article in a new thread. I believe we need a good (or at least not bad) news column here in current events.

OLED and 4K are not competing technologies though. Admittedly, it is more difficult to deliver a television can combines OLED and 4K into a single viable consumer product than it is to produce a television offering one of those features, but that hardly means the two will compete with each other.

Both are screen technologies. The 4K provides higher density but for our poor eyes, I don't think it matters. OLED supposedly provides better blacks (contrast?), but will that really matter? The thing I like about OLED is that it seems to be thin film technology and can provide "bendy" surfaces. It is a minor item, but we are getting closer and closer to the visiplate of Doc Smith (E. E. Smith, PhD in Chemistry) and the world of Triplanetary. 4K will probably only find use in Video-trons at big events since the density implies huge screens.

Even a 55" screen is too big for the room I would put a new set in. Something on the order of 35" would be nice in this room.

The competition will occur in the home market simply as a vehicle to recover research costs. Expect a battle.

    Both are screen technologies.

    But not competing technologies.

LG to launch 4K OLED TV in 2013

Other than in the title of the article, there is no mention of 4K. This is all very costly research, and I expect that if they don't compete they will not create enough consumer interest to pay for both. Have a preference? I don't think this market has seen these in quantity or at all other than as mobile screens.

    Quoting from the article:

Q: What are LG's plans for OLED technology?

This is kind of confidential, but we'll be launching an ultra-definition (4K) OLED TV by next year.

4K and OLED are two different technologies necessary to bring to market the televisions of tomorrow. They can both coexist inside the same device.

From the original article, both are display technologies that are the surface plate. I fail to see how this can be so. You either have an OLED display or a 4K display. I can't see any co-existence unless the set comes with two monitors.

"4K" is a resolution specification that has been thrown around for the so-called "Ultra HD" televisions of the future. These televisions have the same problems as existing LCD televisions, such as dimming control.

OLED is a lighting technology. To the extent that it is tied in with display resolution, it is because OLED technology allows for pixel-specific lighting control.

Due to the current high cost of producing "4K" televisions and for producing OLED televisions, a television that combines both features is outside the purchasing power of most consumers' wallets. Nevertheless, such a television is technically feasible, as mentioned by another website.

Inevitably there will be 4K OLEDs, but they're an even longer way off.

Good to have that cleared up, thanks. I can understand the desire for "picture frame" thin film technology, but if the eye cannot perceive all this nice dense 4K technology, what's the point? The only application I can see for 4K is photography where huge enlargements are sometimes needed in the advertising game.

I wonder what will become less expensive for the 2013 market (to replace my current 6-year-old 22" monitor), RGB LED Backlit LCD Screens at exactly 1080p (1080x1920) resolution or OLED screens? I know that both of them are expensive, have high contrast, and have larger colour gamuts than typical RGB (LED, Plasma, CRT, etc), not saying that any programs will take advantage of this. I don't need twice the resolution of a standard HDTV/Blu-Ray/HD YouTube video but I would appreciate darker blacks and lower electricity consumption.

Aside from the picture benefits, OLED screens also use less electricity than LCD screens.

OLED is really a technology to watch out for. It doesn't have to be just for TVs, it could completely revolutionize how we do lighting. Imagine, if you will, a room where rather than having any lamps or light fixtures in the traditional sense, the entire ceiling instead gently glows. No more shadows, no more dark corners... everything lit nice and evenly. OLEDs will be able to do this.

Yes. We are getting closer and closer to some SF described environments. You should be able to have these connected to a voice activation system and be able to walk into a room and say something like "Lights on, forty percent".

    Then there is this.

The car seems to be able to monitor everything including the driver. I have no doubt that this is the way of the future.

The number one question is what ever happened to American ingenuity, and get up and invent? Why is it that these things are coming from overseas? It isn't only jobs that have moved off shore, but brains as well.

Because many an American company has realized that it is more profitable to copy other people's successful ideas than to spend money to come up with their own and take the risk that they'll not work or be a flop. If Toyota goes to market with this and it sells, don't you worry, Ford will have one too in a few years.

We used to accuse the Orient of doing this all the time. Who is the copy-cat now?

I have been reading about tellies, screens, and monitors and I have found out that OLED TVs are already on the market and that 4K OLED screens are coming next year. There will be an extremely expensive (6 digit cost) 30 inch screen with a resolution 4096x2160 and another, slightly lower resolution one that is 56 inches big. Pretty much all higher resolution OLED TVs will cost in the 6 digit figures for the next couple of years.

OLED is nothing particularly new.  I think the six figure price is an attempt at early recovery of development costs.  The technology itself, once established, will come within reach of the average consumer within 10 years.
