Should I buy Simcity 4 Deluxe or Cities XL 2012?

Simcity 4 is old, but I have played Simcity 3000 and 2000, but Cities XL 2012 looks promising. Which one should I choose?

SimCity 4 of course!!! Just make sure to look up how to customize it to fit modern PCs.

It depends on what you're looking for. CXL without any additions is more fun than vanilla SC4 without Rush Hour, definitely. But SC4's great advantage is that, combining the thousands of custom additions and the Rush Hour expansion pack, great masterpieces can be created - the variety is amazing. You could build a city in the Arab Emirates, in Egypt, in China, in Japan, in Switzerland, in Peru, even in Poland! Downloading all that custom content takes some time though. Some serious time.

What Cities XL has to offer is a lot more versatility when it comes to city layout and easy filtering to get exactly the layout you want, as well as full 3D graphics. There now exist many additions and mods that make the game a lot better, but you're a bit constrained on what style of city you want. With the content available, it's pretty much anywhere in Europe - but that's where it ends.

At the end of the day, it's just a question of what you want - and don't forget to give Cities XL a chance. It's much better than people end up thinking after everybody tells them that SC4 is the best option.

I think you should take the Sim City 4 deluxe edition because you have both Sc4 and Sc4 rush hour together. You also have

more BAT and custom stuff for sc4.

I have Cities Xl 2012 and I must say that it is not bad but it can't reach

a masterpiece like Sim City !

As hotChocolate said, it depends on what you're looking for.

I've been a SimCity player for about a decade now, and I still admire the games, SC4 especially. I picked up CXL a while back and immediately fell in love with the game. Even without mods it was great, although it was, and still is, plagued with technical issues.

When it comes down to it, I'd say both games are great vanilla, although SC4 is a bit better. With mods, I think CXL is better. The community around the game is still pretty fresh, with a small but growing modding scene. The feats accomplished within a few years by modders in the CXL community is amazing. And unlike SC4, you can mod just about anything in CXL, from new streets and transportation features, to new buildings and maps. Heck, you can even mod the sky. However, the simulation in SC4 is and will probably always be better than CXL's, and the cities in SC4 are always changing and growing, while the ones in CXL tend to be a bit static.

So, this is of course my opinion, but if you like the simulation and watching your cities change over time, SC4 is probably your game. If you like realistic graphics, virtually unlimited modability, not to mention the freedom that comes without a grid, then CXL is probably the game for you.

I admit I'm biased on this subject, but I say go with SC4 Deluxe. Despite being older than CXL, SC4's proven its staying power over the years. Now, that isn't to say that CXL won't achieve a similar staying power; it very well may do just that. However, SC4 more closely resembles the good old SimCity formula you may be familiar with from SC2000 and SC3000.

Cities XL is now on sale on Steam, and I don't want to spend much money. Or should I just buy SC4 for the sake of getting a "better" game?

both are verry unstable games, sc4 crashes vs cxl demanding hardware settings

imo simcity is better both afordable and its mass amount of mods here on lex and stex, and later, if you think sc4 is hard, trust me Cities xl is 3x the challenge

8GB ram for Cities XL. If that doesn't do it, I don't know which PC does...

8gb of ram is fine, but the cpu and gpu are essential to run this game,

i have a AMD Phenom II 975 clocked at 4.1ghz, and a radeon 6850 gpu, and i still get a poor frames around 500.000 population running on the medium setting

Well, I got SimCity 4 Deluxe Edition from the Gamestop app for only 19.99. SimCity 4 Deluxe is pretty fun. It's your choice to choose.

I don't have any input on CitiesXL though. I never played it, but I watched videos of it. Seems like a fun game.

Why not both? You can probably buy both of them for under $30. I play both but I prefer Cities XL.

For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

Alright, I chose this answer. Because really, this is now like 2 political parties, one is for Simcity 4, and one for Cities XL.

Politics isn't a question about either/or, but a spectrum about different ideologies. In Europe, especially the nordic countries, many parties belongs to a small third block focusing around Centrism. So I see no problem in enjoying both games, especially as cheap they both are now..

If you want better graphics, definitely go for Cities XL 2012. However, if it weren't obvious enough, this site is almost completely about Sim City 4. If you don't want Sim City 4, which I highly recommend mods for, than wait for Sim City 2013. If you so for Sim City 4, you will want the Rush Hour expansion pack.

    Or better yet, both

Why not buy both. The price today is so low for both. That it should be possible to buy both and play both. They both work on most pc's so. I got both so:)

If you buy SimCity4, good luck with finding the original package. You can only get the Deluxe version nowadays, which I do advice more then the main version.

Cities XL 2012 is bought on this site even with ease. Enough to play in. Just simple: Both games are awesome, get them both xD
