Growing city with 30k residents but large budget shortfall

I haven't built anything of signifigance yet. But my growing city of over 30k people is losing 10-15k a month. What is the best way to get money back? I raise taxes from 9 to 10-11 and everyone flees. Do I just keep building commercial and residential areas like demand wants? I need a few things that can help me lower my monthly spending. Any suggestions?

Well, first things first... Welcome!!!

Ok, so addressing your problem now... pictures would help a lot, but since you are new, let me take a guess...

1) make sure your education, medical, fire, and police budgets are not wasting money... to do that, you click on the buildings and you drop the bar to the point in which is really needed, that way, you will be saving money that is not needed on those institutions.

2) it is importante for you to keep that kind of institutions to the most efficient level, for example, you dont need an elementary, high school, and a college for a 30k city, one high school will do it. And you dont have to build 3 police departments and 4 jails... one police department will do it... and so on... remember, BUDGET!!!

3) finally... make sure to keep taxes in a way that sims dont run away... its important for you to know that RCI bar is really sensitive... unless you are using mods..and in that case... you can set it the way you want it to be

I hope this works for you... if not, lets keep it flowing... :read:

When my cities get to around 30,000 they always seem to take a nose dive also lol. Luckilly I usually have a fairly large cash reserves to pull through as they always need to be rebalenced :-(. If you do cmdp123789 suggested you should pull through ok... goodluck :-).

really? at 30k pop i tend to have all available educational buildings already except for the library i guess, but placed at a strategic place and at low budget. if i want to let my city grow, i think it's important to boost education at this level so that mid and high commercial demands raise as well as high tech industry. then continue building up

As mentioned, control your budget. The easiest way to get more revenue is to zone for more residential. Raising taxes is generally not an answer unless you want to throttle something.

Watch out for airports and seaports. They come in at a default rate that will break you unless you control the funding to something just above the actual activity. The same goes for schools and hospitals.

One quick fix (temporary) is to kill funding for all ambulances and school buses. This will cause some ructions, but needs must.

Over-development in some unbalanced way will cause a run on the treasury too. Do you really need all those bridges and highways? Very expensive. At 30K population, I usually don't have any roads except maybe one avenue across the city as the main drag. All streets, upgrading as needed.

Screenshots would really help. I don't know how it's even possible to lose as much as §15,000 in a single month. o.O With the infrastructure of a metropolis that suddenly lost all its inhabitants, maybe, but with a town of 30,000? Beats me.

Have you build any large capacity facilities recently? Like large water pumps, airport, big power plants (nuclear, fusion), water treatment. These facilities have high maintenance costs.

Like I said I have built nothing of signifigance yet except for a University and City college because I want better education. I seem to be getting a lot of jobs, and a lot of demand. But no airport, no sea port, not even highways... nothing that expensive. I will keep zoning residential but it's getting tiring and I don't see much income gains from that. I also lower all the budgets until they threaten to strike

can you please post a pic of your current budget's details please? see, it would be easier if you show us where the big spending is located... and it will be easier for us also, to tell you what to do

What about your sanitation? Landfills usually suck up my spare credits! How much funding are you pumping into the sanitation dept? Universities/colleges are also fairly expensive.

If you look in the Omnibus, you will find an article on how to post pictures. I think we really are at an impasse without them.

As stated above, pictures will help us to identify the problem. What I can discern now, however, is that the city college is probably unnecessary in a city a population of 30k.
