Lack of highway use disturbing...

So does anyone have any clues to get my sims to use the highways?  They do use them in fact there's a fair amount of traffic on them but avenues running from tile to tile in my region attract more vehicles than do the highways at least upon visual inspection.  I have avenues jammed with cars coming into some of my downtown area the same time there are three highway connections in the same area all with use but not nearly as heavy as the avenues.  This seems to defy logic, I know its some sorta bug but is there a fix?

It is a common fact taht simcity's transport system works starngely. basically if you want sims to use highways rather than avenues all you can domis make more highways.

I used to have this problem too. But to correct this problem I replaced the heavily used avenues with highways and yes I did have to demolish a large amount of structures. But when I got to a neighbor connection, I didn't bring the service or access roads thru was well. I did this because I discovered when I did that the service roads were getting twice to three times as much traffic as the highway were. I demolished the service road connections and that solved the limited highway usage. Hope this helps you out!

Yeah, if you want Sims to use the freeways, you have to make that their only option. Demolish those avenues into downtown and that ought to force your sims onto the freeways.

Thanks for the replies guys, I think I'll just keep it how it is, they have a few taht do use the freeways and since some of the av's are at max capacity it wont get any better on teh avenues so maybe some of them will start using the hwy.  Thats a big time nasty bug.  EA has a lot of work to do on Sim City 5

Take a look in the Modding Files section to the left (at the very bottom). Look under the items under The Essentials (the Network/Traffic ones). These items address some of the short-comings that exist in the game, in regards to Traffic &/or Network related aspects. Just be sure you only use one of these items though, as they mostly modify the same set of game files.

The best way to get Sims to use Highways is to make that the only way to get from place to place. When connecting Residetial areas to commercial or industrial ares avoid using roads or streets. Start with rail then when your city is big enough use avenues. Don't put any zones directly on the avenue (the zone arrows should point to the street or road perpendicular to the avenue). When traffic conditions warrant you can then change the Avenue into a highway. Then Sims will have no choice but to use your highway.

Hmmm, I have this happen as well. There is one difference though. I build the highways last and use those to connect res city to res city mainly. I get nothing but positive use of highways and avenue traffic always spirals downword then.

I however, always thought the lack of vehicles on the Highway, was done on purpose, to minimize graphic recource use.

The shortest distance between two points is a straigt line, the sims will travel the shortest distance.

Automata (the little cars that go back and forth ) is not an accurate indicator of use.  There are a couple of other ways to find the actual usage.  The data view, it shows congestion in colors (green to red ), and the query tool (the little question mark below the other little question mark ).

Route Query tool: now there is one tool, I should use more often. I rarely look for usage amounts that way. Thanks for the reminder Tungston.

EDIT: I do not normally do this, but since it is popular here at ST: My 600th post!39.gif

I have a similar problem, my sims from res/comm city commute to neighbouring industrial city and even though they started using the highway, just before the city borders they EXIT the highway and take a detour via the road. to neighbouring city. I tried to cut the other road connections but then i get messages that simizens cant get to and from work. All the highway ramps in both cities are functional (freight drives on them no problems)

Also, doesnt cutting off the road connections to neighbours reduce demand caps? which, of course, i want to avoid. :-)

Well, umm, in simcity i doesnt always work like that unfortunatly.....

A diagonal in simcity is just as long as an 'L' shape because of the tiles:

    8

    88

      88

        88

    there are 7 letters there

    8

    8

    8

    8888

there are 7 letters here too, and it goes to the same point....
