Questions...

Well, this is a question thread and the first question is:

Do trees placed(in Lot editor) actually do anything (e.g. like reduce pollution?)

2. How do I get a gmax thingy to lot editor?

3. How do I get a lot editor thingy to the plugin manager?

4. How do I get a gmax thingy to the plugin manager?

I think 2,3 and 4 were kind of all the same kinda thing...

Edit: TO make it clearer, its I can't figure out how to transfer the gmax BAT files to the other 2 and same for the others. I know how to create a nice looking house to proper dimensions in BAT gmax, I have made a few buildings in lot editor and I have tweaked a few existing buildings in plugin manager, just can't figure out how to link them togehter to create a buildingable, usable building that is ACTUALLY my own creation, not an amalgamation of simcity's existing props and buildings.

I'm editing in case I get a more productive response.

Or rather, the same kinda "thingy"....

GOOD TEXTURES ARE MADE, NOT FOUND.
(I get tired of saying that in BAT threads.)

"Never keep up with the Joneses. Drag them down to your level." - Quentin Crisp
"I believe in talking behind peoples' backs. That way, they hear it more than once." - Fran Lebowitz
"Ordinary morality is for ordinary people." - Aleister Crowley
"No one ever said on their deathbed, 'Gee, I wish I had spent more time alone with my computer.' " - Dani Bunten Berry

A sign of the future.

I don't think we're going to make it as a species.

I'm pretty sure the trees you place in the lot editor reduce pollution, but only the ones from the flora tab. They also start out young and get older with time just like the trees you manually plant in the game.

But props won't reduce pollution, even if they look like trees.

Your other questions can be answered by reading the manuals. The lot editor's is in Program Files\Maxis\SimCity 4 Deluxe\ and it's called Lot Editor Manual.htm The plugin manager's and the BAT's can be found by going to Help>Help. They could also be answered by looking around the forums here and at tutorials, or by just poking around the programs for a little while.

I already read it but I can't understand it; it kinda skips a few things that it takes for granted I know, which I don't...

I'll try the forum tutorials though, thanks!

^ Sorry about some of the earlier responses... no idea why they were so hostile. :uhm:

The most simple form of the workflow goes like this. You model something in the BAT and export it (which gives you your SC4Model file), take that to the PIM (which gives you your SC4desc file) and then take that to the LE (which gives you your SC4lot file).

The whole process is explained in the BAT essentials... which unfortunately is broken at the moment. But it isn't a hard process to work out. Just remember: Gmax BAT -> Plugin Manager -> Lot Editor.

Thanks! Only thing is, when it exports the file, it doesn't show up in the plugin manager... I can't really figure out how to get it from plugin manager to lot editor. I'll wait for BAT essentials to be fixed.

I've figured it out! I was confused as i thought the gmax BAt made buildings and the role of buildings etc. I'm ok now! :)

Sounds like you're making progress. Very good. Nothing like learning by doing.

There's somethign new now: I'm editing values and things like that in Lot Editor but how do I do negative values? If I put - infront of a number, its invalid. What do I do?

What kind of values are we talking about?

garbage, pollution, demand, name, etc. I don't know what the typical one would be and how it's counted ingame.

You must work with Ilive Reader or SC4 Tool for it ...

    Good Luck ...

Although it may sound like self-promotion, be helpful. It's a bit dated, sure, but the general direction should still be valid.

You can also use PIM-X (can be downloaded from SC4Devotion), which will calculate values based on building volume. However, you will have to guess the building volume yourself, and I always feel it's the better way to get used to what actually happens behind the scenes before you use automatic tools. This way, you have at least a vague chance to judge the outcome of the automatic tool, you don't depend entirely on it, and you know what you're doing with it.

Is there anywhere I can see the values of the existing simcity buildings? That way I could just make a rough guess. I don't think its really necessary to use a calculator- I'm just making them to give my city a bit of personality, if you know what I mean.

Download SC4Tool. It has a database of all SimCity buildings complete with all values - and with pictures, if you wish (optional add-on download).
