Game keeps shutting down.

I keep trying to build my city and the game will just keep closing itself. Doesn't freeze my computer or anything just kicks me out to my desktop. Does not matter what I am doing in the game either, sometimes it will happen right away, other times I can be playing for over 30 minutes when it decides to close. Any tips on how to prevent this? Not overly computer tech savvy, just very basic stuff, so could be something very simple to fix.

Not quite enough information. I suspect that you might be running the game out of the box with none of the published patches which is very unstable indeed. On the other hand, you might be running the digital version from a download seller, in which case things are different again.

Please look in your Documents/SimCity 4 folder for a folder named Exception Reports. Pick the most recent .txt file, and open it in notepad. Mark the first 20 lines only. Then use copy (CTRL+c) and paste them (CTRL+v) in your next post. This will give us a start on the proper analysis of your problem.

You will need to have both notepad and your browser open in separate windows to do this.

Well there's your problem. Your game version is not 1.1.638.0

Here are the first 20 or so lines of the exception

    Exception time: 05/31/2012, at 01:09:51.

You must have never downloaded the SKU update. You can get that here.

And while you are at it, also add the one for the BATupdate to take you to 1,1,640. Your game will them be up to the published standard.

I have version 1.1.641.0 SimCity 4 Deluxe and all I want to know is how to keep my computer from seizing up. The more that I add to the city that I am playing the faster that it seizes up. Eventually I end up saving more than I am playing.

I was using the inserted disk version but I have switched to the down loaded version; that didn't change anything.

My computer is Dell XPS Type: L511Z, Processer :Intel® Core i5-2410 CPU @ 2.30GHz, RAM/Memory: 8.00 gb, System Type: 64-bit operating system, OS/Operating System : Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1. Is this computer fast enough or do I need Deep Blue.

I have tried disconnecting from the internet and this seems to help, but what I need to know is what kind of a computer does it take to actually run this game.

Well, here is a complete list of my configuration. I don't have anything spectacular, but the whole time I've been on this site today, the game has been running in another desktop and hasn't seized up my computer. However, the game is past the response curve threshold and is very slow itself. It has 275K Sims and a lot of supporting structures.

The problem with games like this slowing down is that it simply runs out of CPU. The one that is supporting the game is currently running at 99% and has been now for about four hours. It is a desktop so overheating is not a problem. You have to be very patient with highly populated cities, and only a faster CPU will help, and that not much. As the number of objects in the data set increases the simulation routines have to do more and more, and eventually can no longer keep up a decent response time for the graphics and still do the job. C'est las vie, mon gar.\

I've always run this game on a desktop and have never used a laptop except for business and teaching. But then, I don't have an electronic leash of any kind either.

Insufficient information. There is lots of stuff around to look at, but to diagnose your specific problem we need to see:

    1. The first 20 lines only of your most recent Exception Report. Open the file with notepad and select the first 20 lines; paste them in your post.
    2. In your run box type dxdiag and press enter. Take a screen shot of the first panel from this, and post it with your dump. You'll have to use a photo site for this.

These two items will help us get going on an analysis of your problem.
