i love this tutorial and this whole thread. ever since sc3000 ive been using grids. and in sc4, i particularly like the 6x6 grids, with bus stop and subway in the bottom whatever corner. its very helpful. however, in terms of putting my city services in the 6x6 grids, i found that a 6x7 or 6x8 grid here and there wouldnt hurt and helps to organize these 4x3's and police station and fire station into a nice grid. but it is unrealistic to have all the services like that together, but it works for me!

Great job on this. You answered the big question I had, which was, what is the optimal grid size. I know the answer is not definitive, but did let me know that my grids are Way to big. I tend to build in grids, but for me that is generally because the roads lay out in parallel straight lines the easiest. But I do like whomever mentioned the tree idea for the suburbs, I will try that.

Thank you all for saying these kind words.

Laying out a grid can be tedious, but I am on to a new grid just today. THis only took 1 hour to lay out, but the NAM is definitely not present or this would have taken nearly two hours to lay down, as the NAM slows down the construction of transit a bit.

In this one, I have replaced the avenues with one-ways. This may interfere with exact and equal placement of hospitals, schools and civil works, but time will tell.

This is arguably the best (and most helpful!) topic I've read here yet, three cheers to frndofyaweh! I'll be sure to look into part 2 of this later down in the CJ section. ;D

    Hello,

What I would like to see is a grid for 64 x 64 tile area that can be upgraded to each larger size for connectivity purposes. It would also help to include several different types: Res, Comm, Ind, Ag, etc.

I don't know if this was addressed because it's been a long time since this article was posted but you can slow down the time it takes for the yellow dozers to construct anything for that matter, by just clicking the avenue, street or road once. It instantly completes it.

I do show images of industrial cities in this thread. The idea is to keep them interchangeable. like perfectly fitting puzzle pieces and they are if you stick to the same standard.

Look closely at the last posted tutorial (above). If you havethe 16 neighborhoods in a large city and they are identical to one another, then a medium city will connect at any position with the large city. Even staggered to it and it will have 8 neighborhoods dead on center. The small city size, will have 4 neighborhoods that are identical.

I keep hearing people mention 6x7, 6x8 blocks or 7x8 ones. These sizes are not unilaterally and equally divisable in all three city sizes. Only the number 8 is. Thus the 8x8 block, which must be utilized in a similar style at all city edge connectors. Here, an example of sticking with the Avenue throughout your entire region. Once finished you can interchange any city in this region and it will always connect perfectly.

I use a type of planning I call RELAXED GRID. I keep most of the most important thing to my city, the DOWNTOWN AREA, in a crazy mixed up split, while it all fits into large grid areas, with highways feading in residents from the res. city to it's west. At first, when I had just started playing, I ended up with a city of 2,000 with a highway bidge and the Empire State Building . Sincethen, I have used many different types of city planning and found relaxed grid to be my favorite.

Nice experiment you have... never seen the ideal grid size -- maybe I'd try out your system and see the results! I've tried 3x4 and 4x4, and some multiple grid systems because i want to see which grid system works, and as I stumbled upon your system, I might want to improve the grid system and try your system out to see if it can work in my capital...

Your tutorial has given me a direction to head in. My cities have gone nowhere because I have been trying to put everything under the sun in my game. With what I have learned here, I now understand the fundamentals of the game more and why some of the things I've been doing don't work. I've learned a better way to look at my city. Thank You. This has been an interesting and fun experiment. I hope you continue to do moer like it.

just read this topic and it has been a great help for a SC4 *****, i only have vanilla so some of the things you've done i cant do, but still this has been a big help

i started off my first ever gridded city using the smallest city tile and 1200 low wealth residents later and my whole city is desired by high wealth residential and high wealth industrial, not quite there for high wealth commercial but ive only just started the grid so ill see how it goes, but at this precise moment in time i am very positive about this

    thanks alot

edit: oh and ive finally got bus stops that are being used by my residents (only took 8 cities to get this to work lol), i love the diamond technique you have shown

Are your MT stations congested? It seems like they would be, with all of the people in the cities. Also, have you uploaded any of these cities anywhere? I'd like to see for myself exactly how they work.

wonderful tutorial, thanks a lot frndofyaweh!

you mentioned a long time ago here that citizens don't like to live next to the disease research center: that's because it's radioactive! check your "radiation" map. btw, the advanced research center has the same problem, i always put those two far, far away from my residential zones (but the people still come to the disease research center)!!

anyway, thanks a lot for this great cj!

Excellent information and very well presented, thanks frndofyaweh!

Some thoughts - have you tried to do this on a budget?   I was thinking of starting out using roads in a 7x7 grid, using streets where necessary in the approximate locations where avenues would replace the road/street combo when necessary.
