Enabling Nvidia 540M

Hi All,

I just recently bought a new laptop with pretty good specs, but am having some trouble running SC4 Deluxe. Although I have a Nvidia 540M 1GB GPU, the game doesn't seem to make any use of it. In the Nvidia control panel, I opted to have SC4 run with the Nvidia GPU rather than the default integrated graphics, but when I start playing the game it's evident that the game is using integrated Intel graphics, not the Nvidia GPU (and with integrated graphics, it does not run very well).

I've looked through the forums for fixes and have found a few that help me make the game run more smoothly, but not necessarily allow me to utilize my GPU, so I was wondering if anyone here has the same GPU and is having similar issues.

Thanks.

My specs:

Intel i5 (Sandy Bridge) w/ turbo boost @ 2766 GHZ

Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit

6 GB RAM

2677 GHZ? So, over two and a half terahertz of processing power? I didn't know we'd hit that milestone in computers just yet. :P

All smart alecking aside, though, have you tried pressing FN+F7? It's strange that you can't just switch between the integrated and dedicated GPUs for the entire computer, or perhaps you can?

Keep calm and take photographs.

Failing that, you'll have to enter your system setup during the POSTs, (the BIOS come up or the manual should tell you how) and disable the internal GPU and enable the other one. I am not sure that laptops easily let you do this.

Many thanks for your suggestions. However, it seems that I can only switch GPUs for individual programs through the Nvidia control panel. I checked the BIOS, but there's nothing about the GPU in there at all.

You can understand my frustration when a PC that runs at several terahertz can't run SC4 all that well! ;)

Try asking your machine manufacturer's forum. There may be something you can do with a command script. Then all you would have to do would be to include the SC4 command line in the script and run the script rather than using the shortcut, or point the shortcut at the script. Might were worth an ask on Nvidia's forum as well.

Since all windows does is construct a script or command line and execute it, you might well find a way. Computers don't argue, and I don't argue with them. I just get them to do what I want.

For anyone who wants to know: just update the drivers and it will work fine. I use v285.62. Offcourse make sure simcity.exe uses the nvidia graphics accelerator (rightclick desktop, go to NVIDIA configuration screen and to 3d setup). With older drivers the option of forcing the use of the 540m could malfunction. No need to disable any devices.
