Lovely building.

Are you using arch & design materials in the material editor, and how to use the ground plane for reflections, you have to have bat4 max installed and I hope and sure you may have it installed on your 3ds Max.

To get the ground plane to show up, first you will need to apply your LODs before you added the ground plane if not you will have to delete the ground plane and then reapply the ground plane again, now to have the plane in the scene go to LOD roll out and click on ground, a pop up will show telling you to choose select Pass Though( Invisible to FG) in the Mental ray tab, once you have selected Pass Though when the when the next pop up shows up, then click ok. you will need to . One question what version of max you are using??

Edit:

After you have the ground plane in place you will have to apply a texture on it to give the windows glass reflections, don't forget to use UVW Map to fix the tiling in the plane it's going to tile any way the plane is 1000m on length and width.

If you are having a time trying to apply the textures to the plane it because the plane is frozen you will have to go to Manage Layers in the top menu bar between align and Material editor and click on it and the Manage Layers window will popup and where you see BAT ground plane click on the snow flake to unfreeze it and then the color should not be grey to know the unfreezing process worked.

To freeze it back just go bat on Manage Layers and click on the line in the freeze column, it needs to be on the same row BAT ground plane and once you have clicked on it the snow flake to show up.

Freezing the plane back will be good so you will not make a mistake a move it when your moving other objects around in your scene. :D

I hope to see a sc4 render in your next update/ post. :D

wow ! I Love it. :thumb:

    Thanks! :)

The windows are just temporary until i can find something better. I just wanted to show this update to make sure I did it correctly. The windows are way to dark. If anyone can tell me what to search to find a better ground plane texture or a place where some good ones are that could fit what i'm looking for that would be awesome.

One question what version of max you are using??

    I'm using 3ds max 2010

Are you using arch & design materials in the material editor

Yes I am for some things. Others like the red wall out front I used Metallic paint from the ProMaterials

For this bat I wouldn't really think that the reflection of a city backdrop would be realistic, because of its height the most it would likely to reflect is the road and the pavement. For this instance I would suggest modelling a bit of the interior and also adding a texture to the glass the way Aaron does that that it gives off a "busy" impression..then take the opacity up a bit so you can see some of the interior, you can always fake the interior if needed.

But for taller buildings, the cityscape refelction is a great method.

Nice start though, do you have BAT4MAX installed so we can see some preview renders?

Ugh KFC, love it! Really need to go there soon too.

The model is a great start! It's a bit too boxy though, but that's just cause the side walls are bare. Copying the logo and putting them on the side walls would be a good use of space cause most fast food places usually do that anyway to make sure the logo is seen from all sides.

And another note, LOVE what you did with the front.

For a model this small the ground plane for the reflections doesn't has to be that big and you can even not use one at all...but overall is something you can definitely leave for later, you should be focusing in getting the model right first

Gutterclub is right you can do it that way, make the inside it does not have to be perfect scense we can not go in it but if you make like perfect like I would love to see some render shots of that and have a texture on the glass and set the Opacity/ Transparency on it. :D

So is this what you guys mean by interior modeling? If it is I only have the booths on the one side modeled. Is that going to be enough or do I need to do the whole interior?

    kfcbat6.jpg

And another note, LOVE what you did with the front.

Thank you, I think its my favorite part

do you have BAT4MAX installed so we can see some preview renders?

yup, I have the latest version of BAT4MAX. How do I preview render?

One last thing, is the transparency on the glass okay? Thanks for all the help :)

Nice stuff here yet. I dont think you need to make many details on the interior modeling as they wont been seen in the game, and thats where this building is going to. Except if you want to make details for no reason (i dont know for practise or..,) but if you do make sure to show some close up renders :)

..close up renders...speaking of which, i'd mention that perhaps a zoom 5 sc4 render might help you to see how it will look in game (and so, to sort out any doubt about interior modelling, etc...).

A perspective render, like the ones you've shown so far, might look nice, but tells you and the others very few...

I disagree. You will be able to see the interior in game, especially at night. Look at Spa's Sam Record's, it is visible in day. This really looks nice. And I do need a KFC like this. It's really coming close to looking like this: http://img.allvoices.com/thumbs/event/598/486/46963560-kfc-store.jpg

But one thing, if you can, maybe make the red part go over the windows where you see the tables, and you don't have to, but maybe move that area( Where the KFC man is, a little forward to make it not so boxy. Overall this is a nice BAT and idea. We need some more stores like this. Will there be any plopable though, if not I'll just get the no maxis download and grow this. :thumb:

So before I post a update for the KFC I need to find out how to do those renders you guys are asking for. If someone can tell me how to do these I can give an update soon today. Yes if i can do it there will be a plopable version. I love plopables :)

    -zoom 5 sc4 render

    -close up render

    -preview render

How to do a preview Render

How to do a preview render, you have to go to the utilities tab and then click on Let There Be Light roll out and click sky, next for a day render you want to click on Day, if you want a night render you click on Maxis Nite or Dark Nite. After that you click on Rest Lights & Cameras, next you will need some LODs for the render to work, go to the LODs roll out and click on Automatic LODs. Now to do the render click on (S)South, (E) East,(N) North, or(W) West then click on Preview to start the render. I hope this helps. :D

Can you show me a google link of this KFC if you have got it from a town. :D

I think the the drive thru windows and the ladder on the back on the building is to wide.

    Edit

Oh yea, I forgot to tell you that your model needs to be centered in the scene.

Remember to save your scene before you do this, this is just to have a really good preview of the building, some of your the preview shows the building being really small and some really large.

You will need to group model and all the parts that go to it in to one object, if you do not know where the group button is it's at the top of the 3ds Max screen, in the menu area the word is group of course and click that and click on group, to ungroup it just click ungroup. At the bottom of the screen where you should see X: and Y: put the number zero in both those areas and then redo your cameras and LODs like I have posted in the post above post #15.

Be sure you remember the X: and Y: value numbers at at he bottom of the screen just in case you make a mistake a save the scene, why so if you have to modify any parts of your building and of the parts on the model the will be on point on the grid lines. :D

Its here but since the KFC is new construction and google hasnt updated the area a bank is there instead.

sure thing, I'll work on that today. What would you guys recommend for the drive true window size?

    - half the current size?

    - 2/3 the current size?

Thanks Aaron, that's the size I was thinking about using

no i haven't. I should though, my drive true window looks pretty plain and basic in comparison, i'll work on that.

I do have a problem though. I cant move around or zoom in on my perspective square anymore :???:

Do you see a CameraZ5 on the upper left side of the screen, right click it and go to perspective.

The BAT looks like its going very well. I like it and the design of it looks unique but realistic. Here in San Antonio, they still have KFC's but they stopped building them, so we only have the old white and red ones. We don't even have Bojangles though! Nice update.

That worked perfect thanks. Looking at Bojangles I think I would rather eat that lol. It seems like the less commercialized the food the better it taste. :)

Actually this KFC is modeled after the first "green" KFC in Indianapolis.

So I fixed the drive thru window and the roof access ladder.

I've been thinking about my next bat. I want it to be a Starbucks! To keep with the modern restaurant theme I found two Starbucks on Google I would like to make. I couldn't decide so Im asking you guys to help pick one :D

Good lord, Starbucks is starting to look like a burger joint! lol

I'd personally go with the second, since it's more square, it'll be easier to model. But the first one would be instant win since it's a much more unique shape. Your choice. Also, don't forget about the roof junk on your KFC! A vent or two would do nicely.

I would go with the first one, since it's less common, but since it is your first BAT, maybe the second too. The KFC looks neat by the way and I look forward to the roof junk.

I would focus on finishing your first model, then worry about the next. It is very easy to get distracted and move on to something new without wrapping up older projects... trust me... I know.

So far, your model is looking nice. If you are ever unsure about elements like your drive though window, look up a reference and try to get an exact measurement (since they should all be roughly the same size). After you think you have all the details nailed down, I think you will need to spend some time on materials and textures. If you were to paste a render of this in a screenshot of the game, I though you would notice how foreign it looks.

Anyway, nice to see a new BATer doing so well so soon,

    -Todd

Oh, very nice, I like it very much.

I think you should add something to the roof, some roof junk?

The roof look much cleaner than the walls, maybe you should make it little darker :D
