New Internet Domain Names.

This may make things clearer, or may just add to the present confusion. However with an entry price of nearly 200K, only the serious will apply. You can hardly tell the players without a program now.

The last I heard, "adult" sites could get a .xxx domain.

Up until now, that must have been a sub-domain of .com.

Well, it could easily give rise to subnets that only recognize a few of the plethora of suffixes. It is just a matter of setting up DHCP filers.

It wouldn't be the first time. DARPA already has a private net, as does the military (milnet). Don't be surprised if you have to dicker with your ISP to get on some of them at extra fee.

    The internet really has changed...

Before you can only go to .com, .net, the other 20 domains plus the country domain.

    Nowadays, .xxx, .BBC, .travel...

Maybe we should ask Dirk if we could have . ST or .simtropolis :ohyes:

The entry fee for that is $185,000 U.S. up front with the application. I think we can live with .com. On the other hand, we are non-profit, I think, so maybe we could get a .org

Yes, I have owned a few of those. Starting a new business is like sticking your head under the Guillotine. Much armor required.

Almost forgot why I signed on again.

I got an update from my distribution center today and it was Firefox 5.0. I didn't even know that was about. Wonder about the short life of FF4.

The growth of domains is a non-issue compared to the challenge of rolling out IPv6. That is where the real technology is developing.

Mozilla is moving to a significantly faster update cycle. They are hoping to have FF7 out by the end of the year.

What I don't get is why any company would want to brand their suffix. I mean, "bbc.co.uk" is logical. With the new option they could be "bbc.bbc", but that's just clunky and redundant. If I owned a major corporation, I wouldn't want my web address to be like that.

Then again, I wouldn't want someone else using ".bbc", either, so I would pony up the cash to claim it.

That might be more what this turns into. A way of the management crew getting themselves more money, by making companies pay up for things they're not going to use but don't want someone else using to masquerade as them.

Although I suppose in some cases it could work out. "burgerking.bk" isn't half bad.

Anyone else seen the latest Oscar Meyer commercial? Demonstrates how to get your kids off their computers.

Dad is BBQing tube steaks in the back yard, but nobody answers the dinner call. So he looks around, finds all the kids stuck to screens. He goes to the power box and pulls the main switch. Tells the kids the power went out. "Have a hot dog?".

    love that commercial.

since the name of the thread is Advancing Technology how but i bring up some of the bad things about advancing technology.

Specifically "advances" that don't really need to be made.

my sister just had to pay $200.00 to get her 4 year old refrigerator fixed.

it needed a new CPU board :???: Since when does a fridge need a CPU?

My mom has an old fridge in the garage she uses to keep excess stuff in like sodas, beer,

and leftovers from big dinners. the fridge was bought new in 1973 and has never been to my knowledge serviced in any way, still runs great. the same goes for a chest freezer bought in 1975.

    some times simple is better.

We used to have a fridge like that too, until one day it started shocking people who touched the metal handle :P

Freezers are a pain because you have to defrost them out occasionally. Maybe there's a useful application of technology in appliances-a smart freezer that can moderate its temperature or internal humidity to prevent ice build up? But whatever. The appliance manufactures are too busy making fridges that can order gourmet organic produce over the internet for you.

LOL, Static Electricity. I hate that fridge because in winter it shocks me, then, when I touch someone, I shock them. Anyways, I think that is why there are now CPUs on the fridge, to control the humidity and temperature. I just learned today that my Electrolux (0:)) Fridge has a CPU in it, and you only have to use the touch pad to regulate its humidity and temperature, and you could even had it in Kosher Mode!

If it adds pizazz to the sales pitch, CPUs are inevitable. What on earth is a Kosher mode for a refrigerator? Does that mean it has been killed humanely?

Those laws were made for other times. Because they are in the Torah, the orthodox Jews tend to follow them, well, religiously. However, if the fridge doesn't function during the holy days, what prevents them from getting ptomaine poisoning? They'd be better off with ice boxes as these contain no machinery whatever, and don't even have lights.

Even Catholics have realized they no longer have to support the fishing industry on Fridays any more. And only the most devout follow the rubric for Lent.

A lot of freezers sold in the last few years already have that feature.

What's next, your toaster ordering more toast for you over the Internet, or worse yet... taking over the world?

The next generation of iFridge and e-Toaster will require persistent internet connectivity so that they can continuously monitor and regulate your food preservation and bread heating patterns under friendly and flexible family home yearly subscriptions or pay-as-you-go appliance top-up plans, while simulateously gathering and quietly transmitting real-time user data back to the manufacturer, who can then sell that aggregate personal information to third-party marketeers so that they may tailor informational promotions and consumer updates to specific users and supported units. Consider how much people willingly pay via credit card for digital entertainment, and then imagine what they could be made to further pay for refrigerated and cooked food! Are you sure about that? I personally know 5 different people who are Roman Catholic. All of them consider themselves only casual observers, yet at least 4 of the 5 only eat fish on Fridays. Of those 4, 3 of them gave up one or more things for Lent.

Yes. The Vatican repealed that rule some time ago. However, fish on Friday is sort of ingrained in the Church culture.

As for Lent, strict observance is not a matter of giving up one or two things, it is a forty day fast, with the rules relaxed only on Sunday. You are supposed to give up all fats, meats, and sweets. Fish is the watchword for Lent, and little of that. You are also supposed to spend your time in meditation, not in front of the TV or a video game. The works of Thomas Aquinas and Thomas à Beckett are recommended. I grew up in this milieu, and it was strictly observed in my family even though we were basically the go to Church on Sundays only types. My father was protestant, but he was overseas in the War quite a while, and meanwhile, Catholic observances were kept.

Sometime recently (Vatican II, I think) much of the rubric for Lent became optional. Traditional Catholics stick to it, and some formed a schism with the intent to keep the Tridentine Latin Mass, which was chucked by Vatican II. Centuries of tradition are hard to overturn, even in one or two generations.

My grandfather used to read to us from The Imitation of Christ by Beckett.

    1. One superstition about electricity is that it creates a spark like fire and fires are not allowed on the sabbath. This is a lie/myth! The replacement is that using electricity constitutes doing work so one cannot use electricity on the sabbath. Who here thinks using electricity constitutes doing work? An ice box is more work than a refrigerator.

    2. More coming, the stupidity of it all forced me to post.

    3. Fish is not needed for lenten Fridays, anything vegetarian (pescatarian) will do. Some people cook a certain meal for each day of the week so they would choose something without meat on Fridays. My grandmother and her friends remember when no one was supposed to eat any meat on any Fridays so when she told me that, I would order vegetarian or fish dishes on every Friday we ate out together while she would enjoy her beef (pork, or chicken).

    4. There would still be demand for appliances that can run without an Internet connection. I demand them, for instance.

So why is an ice box more work? If you have a good store of ice, there is nothing to do. You get your ice block on Thursday, of course. The drain can go straight into the sink drain pipe via a Y joint.

Looked up Pescatarian You are quite right. Lenten meals do not necessarily include fish, but no meat at all. In fact, darned little.

Perhaps you've never thought about why Mardi Gras celebrations always occur on the day before Ash Wednesday?

The replacement is that using electricity constitutes doing work so one cannot use electricity on the sabbath. Who here thinks using electricity constitutes doing work? An ice box is more work than a refrigerator.

The issue isn't being addressed from the standpoint of personal work, but from a technical standpoint. From a physical standpoint, opening a refrigerator door involves many different forms of work. Excluding all the forms of energy conversion and work involved with the human action of opening the fridge door, there are at least two main forms of electrical work attached to opening the fridge door. The first is the resulting light that comes on so you can see inside the fridge. By opening the fridge door, you are directly responsible for energizing the circuit that is used to activate the light, along with directly causing the resulting source of power consumption that is associated with running the light. Second, there is the loss of thermal isolation involved with opening the door, which directly causes the internal temperature to increase. Temperature regulation equipment in the fridge picks up the change in temperature, energizing a circuit that kicks in the compressor to cool the refrigerator down. There is physical work done in this step also, along with the "creative work" of energizing the circuit that controls the compressor. Manufacturers are able to decouple the action with the creative work via some simple electronic controls. This isn't a case of silliness or stupidity; it's a case of manufacturers responding to the needs of their customers. It's classic capitalism.

And since I'm on the subject of refrigerators, "Kosher Mode" doesn't mean that the refrigerator doesn't work at all. It is nothing more than running the fridge in such a fashion that the action doesn't directly cause the response. If you open the fridge door and the compressor turns on while you have the door open, you have exercised a form of control over the environment. If the fridge starts the compressor after you close the door, you didn't exercise control over the environment, the fridge did. That's my understanding of it, at least.

    4. There would still be demand for appliances that can run without an Internet connection. I demand them, for instance.

But will you be a profitable market segment? If you aren't, it doesn't matter what you demand, you're not getting it. There is a legitimate advantage to internet aware applicances, which is why manufacturers are starting to make more of them.
