High winds up to 40 MPH and dry conditions not helping efforts to contain the fires.

we've had an unusually wet spring in this area, so no danger here of forest fires at the moment. The real problem comes later in the year when things are much drier. We don't have vast expanses of brush, just trees.

The weather has been dry and windy for quite some time, and now it is starting to get hotter. That spells fire trouble for sure. The majority of the state's counties are now under burn bans, with some areas even being placed under red flag warnings. Over 90% of Possum Kingdom has now burned up, along with some homes.

Ugh! Looks like northern Ontario or northern Alberta. Our boreal forests have been having similar problems. Earlier this summer we had several hundred separate fires burning in the forests.

Now is the time to put your anti-"socialist" politicians on the spot. Gee, I wonder how long it will be before they start asking for Federal money they claim they don't want. I'm sure the east Coast is already gearing up to reap some dough (I'm looking at you, Chris Chrustybread).

Considering the effectiveness of FEMA and their past record, that outfit could be dissolved and/or replaced by some ar\me of law enforcement. It isn't federal help you need, you need a little self-help. The Lord helps those who help themselves.

Probably why the forcasters are predicting high 60s for monday morning.

big storms in the gulf tend to break up the warm high pressure cells tht park themselves over texas in summer.

The cooler air will help with the fires, but I really hope that Lee will deliver some rain to your area. You really need it, but it depends on the ground. Since they are in the north (panhandle?) that should be fairly good ground and not desert pavement. A good saturating rain will really help, but then with the denuded ground you may have to watch out for mud slides and flash floods. Oops! How's that for gloom and doom?

Ah so. A wooded area with a lake in the middle. Hope you get a good rain there.

    Alas.

Now is the time for very careful conservation efforts once the fire is out. There might be a serious effort to repopulate the fauna as well.

In our boreal forests, once fires are put out, unless the area is wilderness, we do make reforestation efforts, but you can't replace the ecosystem that has been destroyed. Forest fires are a natural part of the ecological cycle in the boreal forsts. Some trees cannot release seed unless touched by fire.

With the long drought there might not have been be much Fauna left in the area anyway,At least outside the immediate lake shore areas were there would have been water.

The whole food chain in west Texas is failing from lack of water

At least the mosquito's have not been a problem this year,Guess thats bad news for the bats though.

That's OK. There are probably caves full of roast bats. There is a disease of bats called white-nose (a fungus) that kills them too. It has reached epidemic proportions.

I read about White nose last year in National Geographic

mabey the heat killed the fungus.

There was a special report on CBC news about it. Seems that nothing had happened up to early this summer except they were trying to figure out how it is transmitted. Seems bats get it, hibernate and die immediately when they wake up.

Meanwhile, seems Lee is giving Texas a miss. My link

went to Waco today and saw about 6 places were there were grass fires along the road side.

and N of Waco there was large fire in progress around 11AM but was out by 3pm when i was driveing back.

Reports from Texas says that Lee has actually made the problem worse. Since Lee isn't giving Texas much rain, he is giving them winds which are spreading the fires rapidly. So soon the US will have an area that is in a horrible drought and everything is burning and then just 300 miles away there will be epic floods.

There were a lot more new fires across the state today due to a cold front bringing strong winds. Bastrop, Leon, and Colorado counties saw big ones.

There have also been multitudes of small fires which didn't do any damage caused by power lines in the wind in places like suburban Houston and College Station.

Really too bad that Lee has turned east and is dumping all that water in places that would rather not have it. Reports on the "cold" front indicate that it wasn't cold enough, and just stirred up the air.
