Non-game-play game play

I know it sounds confusing, but the idea is to use the game without ever really running it in active mayor mode.  Has anyone tried this?

I am an architect and have a deep interest in city planning, but my primary interest in SC4 is to build fantasy cities, workable or not.  So I am wondering if anyone has tried to build a city without ever activating the mayor mode?  Because, let's face it...in a REAL city, no two buildings are the same and no matter how carefully you build a city, as soon as you un-pause the mayor mode, things are out of your control and your city goes in directions you may not want it to go in.

So, I am thinking about starting a city from scratch, a region actually, that never engages the game's active mayor mode of play.  Each building will be unique in each region.  If I run out of buildings to plop, I'll design my own.

I imagine this will drive my computer crazy, but heck, I've been looking for an excuse to buy a new computer for a while and maybe this exercise will provide me that excuse.

Does anyone think my idea is possible?  If I start a City Journal of this new city, will anyone read it?  If I invite folks here to participate in my experimantal city, will anyone want to?

I'll need a good region map to start with...can anyone offer any suggestions?

Or, should I start from scratch?

You mean to plop everything and not unpause the game right?

Interesting... in some way... 47.gif

Cities do not develope and live (ie citizens moving in and out, workers going to work etc.) while the game is in pause mode.

I made a nearly ploppable only city once. The only time I had to run the clock was to get cheat money (needed for all those expensive landmarks) and to update power supply. That's my playing style for SC4, i prefer to use the game as a canvas to create cities (workable or not but fairly realistic) sorry, but I just want to create decent looking cities and I cant be bothered with the budget 3.gif

good luck 44.gif

I've done completely plopped cities in the past.  There is a mod availible that unlocks all of the ingame buildings for plopping.  Also browse through all the BATs (it may take some time, at 150 pages). Completely plopping a city will be awesome when done, but will take a long time to create.  Also note that if you unpause the city after you've plopped all you buildings, you city will probably go to ruin because the city you just plopped buildings in has no demand for such buildings.

The idea however, is very interesting and a MOD for it sounds like, a plan to me! I say go for it ldvger. Then do a CJ that shows off your unique structures. That would be a true treat to view!

    Frogface-

I'm with you!  I, too, see this game more as an artistic tool for creating beautiful cities, working or otherwise.  I've played SimCity since all the way back to 1993 (SimCity Classic) and have had hundreds of workable cities since then, with and without money cheats.  But I've never used mods or bats before.  I stopped playing SC4 almost a year ago, right after I bought and installed Rush Hour, because, for me, the challenge of getting a city to work just isn't that much fun any more...been there, done that.

But a few weeks ago I introduced a friend to PC gaming and in the process loaded SC4 for the first time in a coon's age, then later that same eveing I came back to this site and started reading the posts.  I took a couple of peeks at some CJ cities and was just floored at what some folks have done.  So, I started reading more about mods, downloading tutorials, etc., and am now excited about building a city again.

So, anyway, thanx for the encouragement!  I have more mods to download and a region to find or create before I really get started, but keep an eye peeled...

Yes, That MOD would be most excellent! Thanks for the link Chrysler Guy2!

Being an artists and CG hobbiest; I can say for sure, that Simtropolis has helped make SC4 a masterpiece! One that is created, by an ever changing and growing community of true artists!

I will never stop supporting this site, I have the discipline to stay and make huge posts, so get used to me. LOL!

I also promote this site, as an artists community, as well as the most unique game forum, I have ever been a member of. Simtropolis WILL survive past SC4 and beyond, if I have to buy the servers myself. Heehee.

Edit: CG2: your sig quote is a paradox. LOL! I love it!

oh the days of sim city 2000, best thing to happen to sim city.  the urban renewal kit was great, i used it mostly for doing road systems beforehand.

I'd like making plop-only cities, but SC4's menu navigation system sucks for scrolling through lots of player-created content.

For that reason, I'm some what of a purist: I only download growable buildings, rewards, and really good civic structures. But if there was an easier way to view plop content, I'd be all for it.

    Hi everybody,
I've thought of that sort of city before, but never done it... It's true that no building looks like another in cities, except in suburbs where all houses are built in the same time and the same way by the same architect...
But, i never tried to do plop-only cities, mostly because of the lack of good buildings to plop... there are many, of course, but there are not enough to do an entire city... or it would be a very little city...
But I'm with you, if you want to keep this idea and go on with it, maybe i'll participate at this project ?...

Nice idea , i think you would find many of the great cj ers , actually build in this way all the time.Personally i prefare to play the game , aslo there is much better software for those that see themselves as real city designers, SC4 is a very primitive city designing tool.Even "realistic " cities dont realy look real , the limitations of sc4 prevent realism.

I think non game play game play would be great, I've been waiting for this ever since sim city 2000 urban renewel, When I first got sim city 4 rush hour I was hoping that it would contain some simular plop only game play but to my disapointment im still waiting, please please please let maxis include a new urban renewel kit in sim city 5, because to be honest i won't be buying it if it has'nt, cos im really getting board of normal game play, every time i make a plop city i have to un-pause it for some reason or other (usally money) and my city that's taking me hours to build get's ruined in seconds. Come on simtropolis make a mod to help us plop only city makes have hours of fun.

I only do all plop cities, but here's my hitch: I've modded the game ever so slightly so that I can literally control the demand. It isn't a park, or an empty lot: it's the demand graph, with a slider. I slide the demand to where I want it, and it stays there until I change it. I just plop all the commercial, civic, etc and then zone for homes. Every once in a while, I want a certain residential building somewhere, so I just plop it on an already developed lot. Oh, and I'm not giving out this mod. TopCliff

I'm working on a 100% plopped city right now. I'm trying to start a small town around 1900 & grow it to a modern major city. I'm having a great time (although it's a lot of work) developing it. Everything looks exactly like I want! I have to say a huge thanks to all the folks who have done such amazing work on this game.
