Half of the glass has liquid and half has air. Hopefully more liquid is available if needed and that half a glass of poison was not drunken.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

What is your opinion about this question: Is the Glass Half Empty or Half Full?

I look at it as the glass is half full. A lot of people tend to believe that looking at the glass half full or empty determines your outlook on life. I don't necessarily see the correlation, but my outlook on life is positive for the most part.

If its poison or something other deadly stuff, its half full, if its water or something else drinkable, its half empty.

Sooo yeah, depends on the context...

Merged duplicate topics.

Also, I take the engineering perspective - the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

It really depends on the beverage...

And also, If liquid is being poured into the glass up to the halfway point, then it's half full. If liquid is being poured out of the glass up to the halfway point, it's half empty.

Depends on how much you paid for whatever is in the glass.

In a philosophical discussion such as this, I try to see both arguments, but being a rather optimistic sort, I would select "half full" with the hope that someone would keep pouring. Doesn't matter if the content is water or chromic acid, since I wouldn't drink from that oh, so dirty glass.

As an engineering student, I share this perspective :D

Personal, I'm an optimist, so the glass is half full.

Best,

Beat me to it.

Personally, it depends on my mood and what we're talking about, but I do tend towards the half empty side. Cynicism runs in my family.

I'm also very good at finding faults with things. Although, that isn't necessarily always a bad thing. Can't fix faults if you can't find them. Don't just be happy with it as it is, improve it!

Faults usually have to be processed, but interrupts can be ignored. (Operating system gag. Also from an engineering perspective.)

The Glass is Half Empty -El Vaso esta Medio Vacio- becuase you'll find the glass full when it is totally full at its total capacity. When the glass is at 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 or 7/8 of its capacity it is at 7/8, 3/4, 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8 empty, isn't full. So, my conclusion is: the expression Half Full -Medio Lleno- doesn't exists, only I can say Full or at certainly fraction of emptiness.

Depends on how long the glass has been sitting there. If there is water in it and the water is still fresh and cold, it is half full. If the water is warm and stale, it is half empty.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

Heres my point of view on this subject:

Technically: It depends if the glass was filled or emptied. If it was filled to the halfway mark, its half full. If the liquid was poured out, its half empty.

Philosophically: Depending on the issue, I can view it as half full (The Twin Towers may start construction soon, for example) or i view it as half empty(They decide not to rebuild, and end up keeping the 1 WTC).

This is perhaps the perfect summary of my feelings on such a frivolous topic: I focus on whatever may be growing, that is, the filling :D, or the emptiness :(.

I look at the water in the glass as being at half capacity. More of a scientific approach at looking at things.

As long as the glass contains lager, I don't care one way or the other =)

    Half Full

The glass was empty and you put water in it, so it is half full.

If you have a glass full of waterm and you drink half of it, it will be half empty, because it was full.

Obvious, duh! It's half full of course. Unless it's water(any type that is drinkable), soda or coffee.

I'm with the rest of undergraduate engineers here; but I'd like to add that (assuming the glass has a 0.25 dm^3 capacity) it contains exactly 0.125 dm^3. International System FTW!

As a restauranteur, I have to declare that the glass, being a six-ounce wineglass, contains three ounces of a fine vintage.

And a graduate engineer would have put that in dl. The single shot in France is 3.3 dl.

So does everyone perceive the same colors? Color=what our mind displays after our eyes are stimulated by light of particular wavelenghts.

It's been bugging me for a while, actually I've thought of this my whole life but nobody I have ever explained it to ever could figure out what I am trying to say.

Think about it. You can't really explain "green", you can only list things that are green, like grass or a traffic light, or you can say how green makes you feel. It's entirely plausible that what you see as green, I see as orange, but since we have all labeled those things in the same way(an orange is orange, the sky is blue), and they all are represented by the same objects in the environment reflecting the same wavelengths of light, there is absolutely no way to determine this.

Also, imagine using either some kind of drug, or a computer interface into the brain, to stimulate a new visual sensation. A new "color"? You can't even think about what it would look like of course, its impossible unless you saw it.

If I could link my brain to yours via a wire, and gained your vision, would I see a film negative version of the world? Or feel hot and cold differently? Would everything be the same or very different?

The glass contains 50% amount of water of the total capacity of water it can hold
