Any "celebrity" is going to have to be compensated handsomely for their time.

Besides, we're talking collectibles here. It's not how much it costs to make, it's how much it's worth. There are enough collectors out there willing to pay that kind of money for an autograph, so they get away with it.

I certainly considered it, but Stephen Strasburg has turned out to be rather overhyped so I don't see his rookie card (autographed or not) being something amazingly valuable in the future. And I already own no less than four autographed cards, so it wouldn't be special that way, either.
