Haven't been paying much attention to the circus that is the Republican convention. And I don't watch TV, so I wouldn't have seen anyone's speech. But of the people you named, Rand Paul is the only one I particularly care for. Chris Christie.. eh, don't hate him but don't love him, either. I don't know much of anything about John Thune, so no opinion there. And Paul Ryan is an idiot.

I'm also glad our school district finally changed the schedule this year to have us go back to school after the long weekend. They always had us go back for 1 or 2 days before, I never understood why.

There was a tsunami watch last night after the big earthquake in the Philippines. They only expected 50cm. Then today was a nation-wide disaster drill day, complete with emergency vehicle runs in Tokyo and all the students going to school in my town to practice. The teachers must have been thrilled to use the Philippine earthquake and subsequent tsunami watch as a teachable moment.

It has been the driest August on record for a long time. Most of the nation has been experiencing doubt. Eastern Washington was ravaged by forest fires. However, the Puget Sound is doing well because we have a lot of glacial melt-off.

According to the Wikipedia article on megatsunamis (the official term for tsunamis with "an initial wave amplitude, or height, measured in several tens, hundreds, or possibly thousands of meters"), the wave was actually that high - the only waves on the list that outshine the July 9, 1958 one are from prehistoric times, such as the estimated 3+ kilometer-high one created after the Chicxulub impact in modern-day Mexico, or the impact that created Chesapeake Bay - one author estimates the largest of the series of waves created by the latter impact as high enough to have overtopped the Blue Ridge Mountains.

If I recall, three of the five tallest megatsunamis in modern times hail from that Alaskan bay.

Agreed. There is a lot of flooding in western PA during the summer months. Down in the valleys, that is, of which we have many. One is much safer from flooding by living on a hill, of which we have, you guessed it, many.
