Hmm.... so, how common is it for high schoolers in Australia to have jobs on the weekend and/or after school? How common is it for college students in Australia to have jobs during the summer?

I ask because in the US, those positions are common as dirt and quite necessary in order to have any sort of professional career (nobody is going to hire you out of college if you have no work experience), but they usually are paid close to the lowest wages legal. And indeed, positions like these are the most affected when the minimum wage is raised are are the basis for the most common argument against having a minimum wage (that is to say, that students who could be working for $5 an hour instead aren't working and are making $0 an hour thanks to minimum wage laws).

Really? That for causal? Because I could've sworn min wage was like $12.05/hour. If it's 15 then I'm getting paid too low 43.gif

Edit: vv Yeah maybe it's for full/part timers then again you possibly also looked up for a different age ($12.05/hour is for 18 year olds)

Duke87: I'm not sure how common it is. I know a few of my friends in high school had jobs, and I worked as a math tutor for someone for a while. I'm pretty sure it's more common for students to have jobs in university.

Frdm920: $15 might be for full- and part-time, but not casual. I'm not sure. I was going from an ABC article on it. I seem to recall the laws being different for casual. Again, I'm not entirely sure on this point.

Still this says nothing about a man who claims to be 30 years old in Pennsylvania.

Well, the laws in the US don't differentiate. Minimum wage is minimum wage, regardless of the age of the employee or the nature of their employment. Although, employers have been known to get around it (and also around taxes) by hiring people "off the books". That is to say, you (illegally) don't report the fact that the employee exists to the IRS and don't officially have them on your payroll. This happens mostly with students (who cannot legally be paid less than minimum wage and earn tax-free) and illegal immigrants (who cannot legally be hired at all).

I assume he is a non-Latino citizen (by reading his bias in current events) so I would assume that he was paid less than $3/hour as a student although college students are usually officially hired.

By the way, me being alive is a miracle. I once fell off the top of a high ladder when I was a toddler. My mom reminds me that I told her that I saw an angel save me. The likelihood of me falling off that high of a height and not dying was very low. The chances for living a relatively normal life with only scoliosis and kyphosis as results (and obesity as a side result of being overprotected after such a fall) was so low (less than 10%) that a miracle is the best way to describe it.

Um, no. What I said was, minimum wage for servers is $2.83/hour. It's low because servers earn tips. If they earned $7.25/hour plus tips they would make a killing. When I bussed tables my rate was $3.25/hour. It's like that pretty much all over the country (with wages varying of course from state to state.) Although I believe there is a Union in Las Vegas, Nevada and servers there make ~$11.00/hour plus tips.

If you don't tip your server, they don't get paid. Plain and simple. They get a low hourly wage mainly because then they don't have to pay up front for taxes at the end of a shift. When I waited tables I typically got 32 hours/week. At $2.83 that's ~$181.00 for a two week pay period. Nearly all of that is deducted for the taxes a server must pay on the cash and credit card tips they received throughout those two weeks. That's why you tip your server if they did their job properly. And just in case you don't know... the acceptable amount to tip is 20%. Anything less is an insult to the person who just waited on you.

Now, Ilikeseattle, I understand you may have not been privy to this information (about the service industry), but regardless, I don't much care for being called a liar. Even if not in so many words. 30.gif

Edit: Iikeseattle: I suggest you read this. Specifically, the bit about Tipped Employees.

Eh, depends on who's tipping. 20% is the target for adults, but students can get away with something in the 10-15% range. I also wouldn't expect a 20% tip from someone who's obviously got a small income.

Hey, if you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to eat out. But I would never expect 20% from a student anyway. Senior citizens tend to tip 15% and I can't really blame them for it. That's what the norm used to be. But the main reason people under-tip is because they don't know about the minimum wage situation. It irks me to this day and I haven't waited a table since 2006.

Well, expected tips depend on the amount of stars of the restaurant. 1-3 stars get 15% or less, 4 stars usually have an included 18% gratuity, and 5 stars expect at least 20%. Most of the restaurants I go to are run by Asian or Mexican immigrants and are often self-serve. Taquer

Tipping isn't a part of Australian culture. Waiters earn at least $15 an hour by law.

Well, except for footy tipping, tips on horses and other bets, and taking things to the tip. That we do a lot. 3.gif

No, although STAT2001 does take MATH1014 or MATH1115 as a prerequisite. Statistics comes under the School of Finance, Actuarial Studies and Applied Statistics. Math is a different area entirely (Mathematical Sciences Institute, natch).

Nope, as Astro said tipping isn't part of the Australian culture. (With the obvious exceptions listed too true Astro too true 3.gif)

So of course when Aussies go to a country where tipping is common and get asked "Tip?" it's like "Huh?"

We know what tipping is, but since we're not used to it, we generally don't do it correctly. A service charge is usually included in restaurant bills. Oh, and all prices include tax. I understand this does not often happen in the US.

Oh I didn't mean because we didn't know what it, meant it more as we're rather shocked people actually ask for a tip :\

Yeah what's with not having tax added to the prices on the shelf in the US? If we did that here we'd probably have to give everything away for free as it scans higher than the marked price 3.gif
