The new XBOX 360 Kinect application allows Wii style gaming controller free.  You're hands are the controller!  This has definetally added a new level to gaming.  What do you guys think of it?

I... am not enthusiastic about this. Could you get over the idea of driving a car without a steering wheel in your hands if someone came up with such a technology? Yeah, well, I certainly couldn't, and I won't be getting over the idea of playing a video game without a controller in my hands, either. You spend enough time always doing something one way and doing it any other way just feels awkward.

Of course, I do not own an Xbox 360 and have no intention of buying one with or without Kinect, so my opinion isn't really important.

It's actually pretty awesome. But for things like simcity, I would rather have a standard control(eaiser to control)

Someone once said that games should be about games, not controllers. I really wish that game makers would focus on making games that are actually good instead of trying to find new and inventive ways to make me jump around like I've got a drug-crazed hamster in my underwear.

So, Microsoft, you can shove your Kinect thing where the sun doesn't shine. Same for you too, Move and Wii-mote. I want absolutely no part of you.

I like the GameCube and XBox controllers the way they were, I do not need any fracking Wii-Mote or Kinect.

You control a theramin by waving your hands, too.  Heard any modern theramin music lately?  This is a fad that will definitely hit the garbage bin relatively soon.

If I want aerobic exercise, I can go for a walk.  Younger people can actually go for a run.  Being out of doors is good for you.

I used to own a Wii.

I sold it because I got sick of the sheer amount of shovelware that was put out by Nintendo and co., just taking advantage of the waggle because it could, not making a good game because they have passion in developing a good game, which is sadly very rare nowadays, what with EA and Activision calling the shots in many parts of the market.

Motion was only done to make a quick buck. I don't want Kinect nor do I want Move, and I will be very disappointed if a game comes out with Kinect/Move functionality just because it can... but who can resist the allure of the mighty dollar?

In all honesty, I like having to push buttons.

Flailing your arms/body parts isn't always practical and frankly gets annoying. I mean, to an extent motion detection is fine, ie Super Mario Galaxy or if you're targeting old people and little kids. But that shouldn't lead to shoveling tons of gimmick games onto a console like they did with the Wii. I own one and play it occasionally, but I haven't touched any of my (3) all motion based games since the 1st month I've had the console. On any game that has the option of using the GC controller, I'll automatically use it.

I don't know what to put here anymore.

I think the idea is cool. The fact that you can control a game with just your body sounds incredible, but also impractical. Think about the amount of space around you that you need to be able to play a wii game, that was quite a bit but there were also a lot of games that you could easily sit down and play, now imagine how much more space you would need if you had to be constantly throwing you arms and legs around while jumping up and down. I think any house in a built up area will struggle to be able to find the space to be able to use it, or the extra money for that matter. Think about what you are going to break while playing this game, at least with the wii they were able to include cases and straps for the controllers to stop people breaking their TVs, what is microsoft going to do when they get complaints that their furniture is being destroyed, or their pets are being accidentally jumped on?

It sounds like a cool idea, but very impractical. I would hate to think of what the neighbours thought of me when they see me through the windows moving like a complete idiot.

Other than a broadcast concert of classical Theramin music I heard sometime in the last few years, the last Theramin music of note was the score for Forbidden Planet.

If you want a Theramin, start watching the junk sales in the New York area.  GE made Theramins under contract with the inventor way back when.  I can't imagine an antiques dealer wanting one, but others may want to sell one out of an estate.  You could put a request on freecycle.org and see if you could scare one up.  If you get a damaged one, you need to be fairly good with electronic tubes to get it working.  As I recall, it doesn't have a lot of guts, just some frequency generators, a speaker and some capacity sensors of some kind.

Psst... guys... it is not necessary to flail your arms around like crazy the way they do in the commericals to play a motion-sensitive Wii game, nor is it even necessary to be on your feet. Sitting on the couch and giving little flicks of the wrist works just fine. 2.gif

From a gameplay standpoint, I don't really care about motion-sensing technology.  However, from a technology standpoint, I am glad this is being developed.  Motion tracking is primitive technology and this will require the developers make several major improvements to the field.

BTW, ever notice that on ST, they use "visiplates" for communications?  If their holographic technology is so good why not use it for general communications in the manner of Star Wars?

No clue on that. Mabey cause dell sold them to them.

Holodecks will never  exist. Those types of things will be more like the total imersion vidio games from

Red Dwarf or Total Recall. Hooked directly into your brain and your skiing Olympus Mons.

When the day comes that the general public can become cyborgs, I hope to be comfortably ensconced in the afterlife, if any.  The idea of implanted communications electronics makes me want to vomit.

I've tried it, and I must say that it's funny.

... But only because it's new and innovative. I think it's one of the things that becomes borind the 3rd time you try it.

Yes, I agree with many others.

I have quite a few friends who purchased the Wii. Guess, what? ALL of them are sitting on a TV shelf not being used, or re-sold - It gets old pretty quick.

My daughter begged us to get her a Wii, but we didn't do that right away. Instead, we let her play with two of her friends Wii's. Guess what? She doesn't want one at all now, lol.

If you enjoy MORPGs, RPGs, or WoW for example, the motion detecting consoles are going to be a real pain.

Lots of movie fans saw Tom Cruise in 'Minority Report' using that virtual computer data base and thought, "Wow, that is cool! When Can I get that?!" Hopefully never, in my opinion.

Why would we want to go backwards in advanced technologies? Really, if you think about all the physicalities of this and the extra gadgetry involved - it's actually a backward 'move'.

I would rather see us skip this technology and move passed it, to the next phase - thought controlled operating systems and games, will be the real catch on ;-)

That and I don't think bouncing around like a wild hooligan is the best way to get aerobic exercise. Usually if I'm outside, I usually ride my bike all over the neighborhood or at least up and down the street.
