Minecraft is this great new cheap(13-14 bucks) indie game that is in Alpha now but which has been getting exposure lately from stuff like Penny Arcade. The guy who is making it is getting lots of money from sales and has started a company with full time employees. A new update is scheduled for Halloween that adds more features.

You start with absolutely nothing and must collect resources to build shelter and weapons to defend yourself from monsters which appear at night. Everything is blocky, and you can break and re-plop all sorts of things. Basically, structures, tools, minecart rail lines, etc. Also, there is flowing water and lava. You can dig deep underground or high into the sky and there's all sorts of neat things to find. As long as you have resources you can build on and on. The map is 128 blocks high and goes on nearly forever.

It is designed to be single player and can be played offline, but has a multiplayer mode(but it is still not finished totally yet).

If monsters(known in the game as "mobs") get to you, you have a health bar which can be replenished by eating meat from killing pigs or bread from crops you grow. If you die, you re-spawn back where you first teleported into the world at the beginning of the game, or awake from a bed you slept in. So in a way it is a sandbox game but death poses a moderate threat, also one of the monsters in the game can explode and damage your creations. You have infinite lives and can collect your inventory of goods off the ground after dying however.

Its got funny graphics, a throwback early 3D gaming era look that reminds some of Doom. You can re-skin your player easily by going onto your account and uploading a .PNG file of the appropriate size/shape. Then when you play on any mutliplayer server you have a recognizable appearance. The multiplayer by the way are all hosted by individuals are are all pretty much free but some require registration.

My friend showed it to me and I bought it. You have to pay about 10 Euros or 14 bucks USD, but once you buy it, you download game content locally to play offline and also the client can get unlimited future updates and you have access to stuff like server software and tools as well. The developer is a cool guy who has a player friendly paradigm so I felt like it was worth paying money to get. I will mention that the older, early version known as "classic" is free but it is limited and you mainly just build stuff with a few blocks.

The guy who showed it to me is also writing a program that maps levels right now, since the game data structure was made public so people could make tools.

I thought it would be something you guys would like, since its mostly a building game.

I have it too, but haven't got the paid version yet... it's a brilliant game tough! Play it very regularly, nearly all the time on the multiplayer. I'm gonna buy it very soon 4.gif

I have a feeling that the game will hit beta in early november (halloween update, a week of bug fixes of that and i think notch will say its out of alpha), and when it does you'll have to pay an extra 50% more.

hopefully for those of us who chose to buy the Alpha version, it won't cost anything more 2.gif, as the promise went. Its a great game and all, but I do think 15 to 20 bucks is the most reasonable price for it and I would be surprised if even the final product was beyond that.

Anyways, the Halloween update is going to make this game much better and more interesting. There's a video showing the biomes at least sort of completed now.

Still needs a few things, my wish list would be more dynamic/mechanical features(give all blocks physics, create wheels, trapdoors, a anti-gravity block type?), that would allow you to create with them and a few bits of redstone some amazing machines/vehicles.

If anyone's familiar with Garry's mod, yeah kind of a more primtive version of that. Haha, building flying platforms and rocket powered catapults from a playground carousel, a steel beam, and a bathtub, it might not be that but I think Minecraft has enough cool things of its own to take such a sandbox to the next level. And TNT does fulfill the role as obligatory video game explody barrels of fuel.

That, and continuing to add new mobs, new challenges, etc. Really, I like the survival mode because it gives you a clear goal(stay alive), but you can do whatever you want to accomplish that.

Considering notch has already made more than 5 million Euro's (revenue) from minecraft, i get the feeling that he doens't exactly need to rip us all off and make us pay extra for beta anyway.

New update is out, biomes are good fun. Yet to go to the new dimeionsion though.

haven't been to the nether either yet

I started a new world and have been chugging away, I always play on normal and do not cheat to get resources so its going to be a while before I am ready to deal with portals. After two days I have a nice brick house with glass windows, doors, and fitted with all my chests and things, above a ladder that goes down into a room that is the doorway to my mines which are now just extensions of some natural caves I've tamed.

So yesterday I saw a building on classic multiplayer which had some sort of door. If you hit a red block, the door opened and the red block changed to a green one. If you hit the green block, the door closed and changed to a red one again. Does anyone know how to make something like that? I've been looking around already (Google, Minecraft Wiki) but couldn't find anything yet.

By the way, my name on Minecraft is Bepi_Nomdus 3.gif

I made a building in Minecraft that some of you may recognise from SImCity 2000.

Wow, Have they ever made it hard to post an image on here. I can't figure it out for the life of me.

I don't know what the name of the building was in SImcity 2000. Actually I don't remember if they even had names in SImcity 2000. But if so could anyone tell me what it was called? I can't get the game to work on my Vista machine. : (

It looks like an OK game but is not worth paying for beta.

You get the full game for free when it is released. And to be honest I don't think the final version will be much different from the current version. That is to say I think it will play pretty much the same as now but maybe with some new features and bug fixes.

Some of my friends are playing it, and says that it is a very funny game to play. I don't think I'm gonna start playing it, though. I don't play a lot of different games, but stick to a few.

I considered playing the beta before I found out that I would have to pay. Now I will NEVER pay for that game, but if I get curious, I might try it out (hopefully there will be a free demo, but I care not if there is no free demo, I refuse to pay for a crappy pixelated beta).

Charging for an alpha of an indie game is just rediculous and is just asking for it!

I like the graphics. They've got a charm to them.

Also, it's an alpha. Not a beta.

I went and bought the game last week, having lots of fun on multiplayer 9.gif

The graphics are customizable and updatable, you can make them better. the largest someone tried was like 1024x1024, and it worked. (Untill the game loaded another 20x20 grid of sections.)

I've been playing Minecraft on and off for a while now. Awesome game with so much potential. So addictinng! The game has already won indie game of the year, sold over a million copies (without the help of a huge marketing team), and is only still in beta.

I'm currently running a private server with a few of my buddies. Yeah, it is pretty amazing how much you can get done with 5 people. When I find some time I'll try to post some pics later.

    Hello everyone!

I am here to advertise a fun server I help moderate which Simtropolis people are all welcome to play on. We really want more players to liven up the experience.

    minecraft.gawilson.net

Also please visit the website with the same URL to read the rules and see maps and the list of modds we are currently operating. It is a friendly, open place to play with no whitelist or silly role playing decorum to follow-just obey all rules and do not cause devastation. Build whatever you'd like. We have multiverse and two worlds, one of which is older and urbanized with skyscrapers and a minecart(using a cart mod so you can speed without boosters) metro rail, the other is still wild and untamed with mobs, and health/death enabled.

The server hosting is of very good quality and is run by the user named GeoffWilson. If you come on, you'll be joining in with players from Rpgtoolkit.net as well as some other sites I forget.

    Thanks,

    TXSteveW aka HamsterTK

I haven't bought a copy yet, but it's definitely on my do-want-list. Minecraft is what I wished Spore and SimCity to be all along, a creativity tool that forces the player to get creative in order to make progress.

I would play it if the sun and moon were not cubes, if diamond blocks were as hard as real diamonds (and as inflammable), and I had the money.

EDIT: I can come up with the money this summer, texture packs can fix the sun and moon, and there might be a mod with diamonds (or there might be one by the time I can afford MineCraft).

What I was talking about was keeping diamond ore the same (since it is pretty much rock with diamonds in it so mining it would just be breaking the rocks around the diamonds), but making diamond blocks (crafted from 9 diamond gems) have 100-5,000 blast resistance depending on whether you want to count the flammability of diamond or not and also to require a diamond pickaxe to be mined back into 9 diamond gems. It would also be cool if diamond ore could be mined successfully and predictably (at least 75% of the time) with TNT.

Since when did I get a +5 reputation?

I might have a look around. I haven't done any multiplayer before.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Hack it. Use either too many items mod, requires modloader and winrar.

Or use invedit, cant be hard to find via google. And it needs sulphur and sand if your gonna do it legit.

    Hope i helped :D
