I thought this would be rather different. Anyways, if you are unsure what a ghost highway or ramp stub is, click here.

I doubt many of you have highway stubs or ghost ramps, but if you do, please show!

Here's one of mine. This is Highway 311 in Lodi County (city of Swatamp). I wanted to extend it to H-5 in the county (city) north, but didn't have enough money. I don't plan to connect it since I directed H-5 west instead of south as I had originally planned.

I do plan to at least end it at the nearby avenue so the little one-way street won't always be congested.

I like this alot, great thread idea! I actually wish I had something from the game to contribute to this, but I always must finish everything, or just remove it/make it complete some other way. 3.gif

I do have some real life examples though, such as the I-95 interstate right of way in Revere and Saugus, Massachusetts. Also, the I-95 junction with Rt128 in Canton, MA has stubs. These I-95 abandonment came from a canceled plan to run I-95 straight through Boston. I would say it's best that it didn't happen... US3 also has stubs, like the ones in Canton, where it meets Rt128, in Burlington, MA. I'm not sure of the complete ROW, but it would require going through some upscale towns before entering Cambridge, MA. There are also some very small ramp stubs left over from I-695 (the inner belt) project, but I believe some were eliminated in the Big Dig.

Lol yea, and how US 40 in town turns into a random viaduct for about a mile ... the ramps at Caton avenue and 95 are rediculously long cuz thats where 70 should have came in Wabash in the west side is 6 lanes because it was meant to be the extension of 795 into town. 83 was meant to hit 95 where MLK and 395 do, and MLK is actually interstate grade as well (had they finished it). If only they had finished these maybe, just maybe it wouldnt take 2 hrs to drive 20 miles in rush hour 3.gif

The A4 in the Netherlands is the most well-known ghost motorway in the Netherlands. It misses three stretches: Delft-Zuid - Rotterdam (planned for about 50(!) years, but due to discussions never build), Spijkernisse - A29 and Dinteloord - Bergen op Zoom (under construction). The end at Delft-Zuid is the most remarkable of all. You see that they started laying down some asphalt near the ramps (only for a few meters or so) and there's some base soil layed down over the whole stretch (about 8km), but that's untouched for a very long while...

GMaps location: http://maps.google.nl/?ie=UTF8&ll=51.982343,4.332508&spn=0.004672,0.013894&t=k&z=17

Unfortunately, I don't have ghost stretches of SimCity 4 motorways to show here.

Best,

Maarten

Interesting thread idea. I thought I had a ghost highway and I was getting ready to post a pcture but then i read that article and my state highway expansion in my region dosent count. The interchange is already finished but its only unused because development hasent reached that far out into rural areas yet. I was just anticipating increassed development in that city tile and thinking ahead.

The only real life example I could think of near mein the New York City area is the Seaford/Oyster Bay Expwy (NYSR-135) where it ends in a full cloverleaf at Northern Blvd insead of traffic lights. The highway is blocked off and all traffic is forced to exit. Theres actualy a right of way and cleared land that extends up to cold spring Rd, but im guessing all the gated communities on the north shore of long Island put a stop to that along time ago. I think Robert Moses wanted to build a bridge over the Long Island Sound at one point, connecting SR-135, to I-287 in Westchester but I think that propsal was killed a while ago too.

Here are a couple of SimCity 4 stubs:

This is the southern stub end...

...and this is the northern stub end. They were supposed to connect to each other but there's no room in the budget.

There are currently no plans to complete this "missing link" (too much development in the way).

I have always thought of how the "slow" sims would get off if they missed the final exit :-P

Development suggestion though... convert the street to a road (would be better to have an avenue) and bring the highway down to street level, connect with avenue and walah! you now have a very smooth transition!

Here's two stubs I have in my city. While this one was completed to connect the neighboring city,

I can't say the same for the other incomplete freeway.
