The only thing that hasn't happened racially in this edition is there don't seem to be any aliens that are strong in the Force.

What about Maz? I think it's pretty strongly implied that she has some connection to the Force. In fact there is a rumor of a deleted or un-filmed scene where she actually uses it.

Possibly, but she is more of a custodian rather than a user.  I suppose Luke would not have deposited his light sabre with just any member of the resistance.

An untold story in this section is the second fall of the Jedi organization that Luke was building.  A side issue, but probably worth a flashback episode in the next film.

But from episodes 1-3 there were plenty of alien Jedi Knights. They could not have hunted them all down after the events in Episode 3.

And yet after EP VI, the Force went quiescent.  I guess it needed time to develop a new Sith lord who wasn't much at choosing a disciple according to EP VII.  Looks like things were out of balance for around thirty years (one generation) then we have Ren, an abandoned orphan and Luke equivalent abandoned on a desert planet (Tatooine II), and Fin, the storm trooper who was an undeveloped Jedi, neither of which knew anything about the Force.  Did you notice that Leia knew all about Ren?

If Maz was supposed to be some kind of Yoda equivalent, she seems to have renounced the Force.

So now we have this cliff hanger wanted to hear the conversation between Luke and Ren (Ren for renewal??).  Ren seems to be very strong in the Force, or maybe the Schwartz.

Ren may be lukes Daughter.

Maz could be a force sensitive with no training and not in the Jedi temples records so was not hunted down.

This has overtones of EP IV.  Ren is a pilot, you'll notice.  She doesn't seem to be into racing.  And she is an ultra powerful natural.  There is a lot of plot retreading here, including the alien party at Maz's place.  It was more souped up, though.  Kind of like a mish-mash of IV and V.

I did mean Rey Not Ren is lukes daughter.

they again they may be retreading the Twin story.

Rey and Ren  could be brother and sister. or at least cousins.

Ok, Rey is definitely Luke's baby girl and Ren (Ben) is Han and Leia's brat.  They're cousins.  And Nonny, where did you get that Leia knew who Rey was?  There was absolutely no indication she even knew who the girl was except that she senses the power within Rey.  I also don't think Maz is Force sensitive, she even said so in the film.  Also, supposedly the opening scenes in E8 will pick up where E7 left off.

EB, you're right in a sense, not all the Jedi were wiped by Palpitine and Vader, a few went into hiding like Obi-wan and Yoda.

Leia welcomed Rey with open arms and a knowing smile.  Could have been simply recognition in the Force, but I sometimes read other things between the lines.

Ok, I can see where you got the idea from, there's no doubt that Leia could sense the Force in Rey.  Probably the reason Rey went to find Luke rather than Leia.

JJ already admitted that scene was a mistake. It doesn't make sense in the context of the story. She should have hugged Chewie.

The whole Rey mystery is kinda silly. Either she's Luke's daughter and everyone is going to be like "yeah we knew that", or she's the daughter of some random new EU character and it won't really matter. They just better not pull some "born from the force" or "midichlorians" bs.

While I think that the Rey mystery helps create anticipation for the next film, the reveal will ultimately be a let down.

Hamil hinted that Luke might be gay, so it seems to me like they're implying Luke never had a relationship with a woman. Then again it could just be a huge diversion to throw us off the daughter thing.

Kinda drifting off topic here so I'll name a film that wasn't previously on my list: Ghost. Demi Moore sure is cute with that tomboy haircut.

There is always the possibility that she's a genetic accident.  Mutations do occur, even now thousands of years later.

@Mary miller: All quite recent.  How do you feel about older stuff, e.g. Gone with the Wind or Casablanca?  Probably both before your time, but some oldies are forever.
