Josh, that link is no good or the thread has been archived.

My friend, Cp, that is one of the FAQs that we find hard to respond to over and over.  The likelihood of EA producing another SimCity that compares favorably with SC4 is in the same category that Shroedinger's cat will be found alive.  Will Wright and the main Maxis crew no longer work there, and they were the ones with the smarts to produce SimCity.  I seriously doubt that anything that pot-boiling, greedy, deadline-driven outfit will ever produce anything as elegant as the present game.  If they hadn't pushed so hard to get it out the door, it would be a lot better than it is.

One of the things they didn't do was the RHW package (you can get it on the STEX or the LEX) that create realistic highways.  The NAM team have been working now for years to enhance the traffic network on this game, and have been quite successful, as well.  In addition, because of the open-ended design, hundreds, if not thousands, of players have posted many modds and additional lots on the STEX, LEX, PLEX, and other places to keep building on the foundation.

Alas, we are stuck with the graphics and the lack of true multi-processable multi-threading.  The game is a legacy production, created long before modern machines became available.  It can't even handle extended capabilities of a GPU.  EA, meanwhile, greedily hangs on to the source code collecting an odd ten bucks here and there and denies the opportunity for the community to update this very good, but getting long in the tooth, program.  Some of us are excellent programmers and could handle working on the source to fix known bugs, incorporate the current set of patches, and produce a clean super Deluxe game.  Such a release could rekindle interest while we went on to make it more modern.  Some of us could even reverse engineer the game, but this is illegal, and EA has lots of money for lawyers, but none for development of a proper SC4 follow on.

Hacking in this manner is illegal unless you have a license.  You really need more than the .exe, which is on the discs anyway, to really do a good job.  The source and the specification, if any, would enable the community to do much, much more including recoding some of the really bad spots, and/or converting the game to a more modern language system, like Java.

Java is approximately 20 times slower than C++, no matter what the marketing says. C++ is a very reasonable game-development language.

EA isn't going to make another Sim City game. With The Sims being a successful franchise (why?), research and development dollars will be spent on that lines that are deemed to have mass appeal. On the whole Sim City franchise and its fans are considered a niche market, and not worthy in budget terms) of a next gen game. The money being spent on Sim City is just cheap changes to format to accommodate new media (i-phone, i-pad).

ahahaha, it may not be as we thaught... according to a link on the simtropolis homepage, EA have just registered a domain called SimCity5.com! They have also extended the domain for simcity.com!

Could Sim City 5 be just around the corner?

I just typed in simcity5.com and I got nothing. So it might just be a mistake or they didn't open the site to the public yet.

OK all of you who think that there is really a so called simcity5.com,, DO NOT BELIEVE IT.

Do you honestly think that EA is going to set up a piece of nonsense such as a domain for something that may not happen? Or if they did, they are most likely trying to appeal to the public and draw attention to themselves.

Also if you Google it, they may not have it up on the search engines just yet. I would have to see it to believe it though. Also, look at the post in the Current Events forum, that also discusses this.

I must say ST is getting flooded with these kind of discussions. Today and probably the entire next month will be as heated as ever about an eleged SC5.

That's what I've been noticing too. There isn't an end to the SimCity 5 disscusion. And even if there is one, I can predict it will be terrible, because Will Wright is too busy with the Spore and My Sim ripoffs. Spores doesn't seem like a terrible game, but they are both still in my opinion a ripoff of what the Maxis team can really be doing.

EDIT: I know this is somewhat off topic but it still talks about ripoffs. This game is Cities XL. They basically take everything that Maxis made, and changed little things like graphics, and try to takeover the city making buissness. Meanwhile, they give no credit to the real creators of the whole idea have having it in a video game. To me it's a ripoff and SimCity will always be the best city creating video game series ever, in my opinion...

I don't necessairly think that Monte Cristo stole SC4's ideas and applied it to CXL. As a matter of fact, what else are you going to do?

Also I wouldn't say MySims, The Sims, or Spore are really ripoffs. Sirron, EA publishes tons of games to the market. Why there are right now they are working on a new Need For Speed game. So we can't say that they are a ripoff, considering that EA makes a wide range of stuff.

Also, Will Wright is the designer of SC4, not the entire range of the Sims and Spore stuff. I thought you should know the truth about Will Wright. However I would be surprised big time if Maxis actually did a SC4 game. Maxis is an utter failure that may be shut down soon. Since Maxis is a part of EA, EA will make the next SC, if there is a next SC.

Oh and Sirron, another thing you have to understand with Monte Cristo and CXL is that they are a really small company. Sure they may not be as popular as EA, but they are just starting. And I for one don't expect Monte Cristo to take CXL to new heights anytime soon. The more I think about it, the more I think that CXL turned out like SC4 is right now off the bat.

But yes, I do believe that EA and so called Maxis are really stirring up SC4 enthusiasts as me and you with their simcity5.com domains. Also look at a post that simmaster07 did in the Is S55 Going to Come out in the Current Events forum. He linked to sites such as simcity5.com, also 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. Stirring up the market is what they do best. (time to shut up Josh)

I thought you should know the truth, Sirron.

Never said The Sims are ripoffs, and I still say My Sims are ripoffs, they always makes games with the worst ideas. They never leave the series alone. And Cities XL is still to me a ripoff, I've read review and they've said that It's pretty much the same thing as SimCity 4.

A very good point with the My Sims. As a matter of fact, you can even import Sims from The Sims. Which I to my fullest extent doubt that cause there is no import sims button anywhere!!!

Also advisors were the worst things that Maxis ever did to that game. Most of the time it is also illogical, such as abandonment when you can walk to a store across the street and work, instead of driving 2 stinkin' miles to a factory, and sit in traffic in the busiest highway in the region in morning rush hour. SimCity 4 needs to be more unique regarding it's relations with the My Sims in The Sims.

Oh and Cities XL isn't a ripoff I think. Like I said, what else are you going to do? You don't have any other ideas for a game. Cause they are all pretty much taken up from SC4! If you want better color quality, or a free floating camera, or something without a grid, then play CXL! None of this stuff can be modded and loaded onto SC4.

Also if Maxis was using the worst ideas for the game, then how can Monte Cristo have copied SC4? IMHO, the 2 games do share relations. But they are 2 totally different franchises and games at the seperate time. They both just have different phiolsophys about things. That is all there is too it.

Sirron, I would recommend playing CXL. If your computer can handle it, download the demo, and play it. Tell me what you think of it. Cause I know when I upgrade my computer that will be the first game I buy.

Okay okay...calm down.48.gif

As Simcity 5 is concerned, I for one, am not too worried or anticipating a new one coming out. After all, EA is a company. And companies exist to make a profit. If you had a buisness, wouldn't you do whatever it takes (legally) to become big and keep making money. Its not that they don't listen to us, Because if that was the case, They'd have stopped selling SC4 years ago. Its that they See what products that they have and what makes the most money, and they sell what makes the biggest profit. Not saying a SC5 would make money, its just how much? A small profit margin like 1% or so wont cut it. So they stick to what pays the bills and more. The Sims, NFS, Madden, Etc. will continue to be the main sellers for awhile because of this.

Also...through this at your noggin. What if...EA doesn't want to make a new SC game....BECAUSE of the extreme Fanbase around SC4. What if they don't want to risk a failure like SCS again, because the fanbase may be comparing the new games to SC4 too much. Because as you know...Simtropolis and SC4Devotion are the 2 biggest SC fansites, and if even one of those sites condemn a game, its game over. Now think about this...What if...this is the same reason other companies don't want to venture into this territory. They dont want their games shot down and money wasted Because we are too caught up in one game (albeit.....it is my favorite game.....) I fully believe that this is the reason Monte Cristo went out of buisness. They were banking on a life or death with CXL. And once they pushed it out there....People began criticizing it. This isnt like SC4...SC4 has these but not CXL...Why isnt CXL more like SC4. Ill tell you why. Because the only thing similar between the two games is that they are city building games. It'd be like saying Call of duty and Halo are the same game but with a few minor differences. No. They are two different games with the same Genre. Same as CXL and SC4. The fanbase is whats killing this genre, not the companies. Because the people are too stubborn to back away from SC4 or 30 minutes and try a new game. After all. Thats what we all really want now is it? A New game that is BETTER than SC4

Oh. And a few tidbits that kinda irk me while im winding down from rant mode..Maxis = Nonexistant. Monte Cristo = Nonexistant. They are now EA for SC4 and Focus Home Interactive for CXL. Please call them such. 49.gif

[/rant]

-Zach

P.S. - And for those who might think it, I love SC4. It does hold a special place in my heart. From countless hours spent working on cities that i seem to not finish....to Real life occurences that i quote the game to, It is and always will be my favorite game. But I also believe that we, as a community, need to do more than argue on whats a better game, or a better program or whatever. We need to (for a lack of better teminology) band together and work together on our true love. Our love for the game. Our love for the Genre. Our love for...well..Building the best gosh darn cities possible! 16.gif

Anyways, regarding the simcity5.com website, EA only bought rights to the domain, which doesnt mean they actualy made the website. Just buying the domain name means no one else can make a website with that name. A day after I put a link on the thread joshriddle originaly was talking about , (and just like bigthing also said) someone else put up the link I had used about the sc5 domain. that post was deleted, which makes sense because despite that weird move to buy the domain we shouldnt get any hopes up...
