Or when you bulldoze too much RHW and it changes to the RHW-2.

Every tutorial will tell you to demolish the entire starter. To me, that's ill-advised.

I only destroy one tile of the starter. When doing so, you'll find the true starter, which, in the case of RHW, is a diagonal-ish segment of Road. (Several other starters will show OWR or Rail.) I always keep these kinds of segments.

------

I guess the only problem I personally have with SC4 is the disappointing lack of realism. That's why mods such as RHW were created.

JS and CRV, I would have to disqualify your posts; That's a complaint about a mod, not the game itself.

Lately, I've been able to play without a CTD for three to four hours at a stretch. The clue is to save about every 10 minutes or so. This seems to reset the queuing glitch that causes most CTDs. Since I am running the program under the wine interpreter on Linux, this has been pretty good. Earlier versions of this wine beta were causing the game to give up in disgust, but not any more. wine 1.3.22

I guess you're right, but I'm not confining the matter to NAM Puzzle pieces if those were what you were thinking of :)

I get the frustration on a few modular sets as well, especially on ones that plop on water because water depth & the contours of the sea floor often affects placement. I've encountered instances where I think everything's aligned & when I actually plop I'm a tile off.

Here are a few of my gripes:

1. The lack of an easy way to run the game in widescreen.

2. Terrible multicore support.

3. Sims complaining over a commute across the street and abandoning as a result (I do have the mod that fixes this, however)

4. The fact that the game is 8 years old and has yet to see a successor.

5. The need to manually adjust the funding sliders for health & education- it gets really annoying once the cities get larger.

6. That damn environmental advisor.

7. The lack of autosave.

The thing that annoys me the most is when some residential buildings get the 'No Road Connection Zot' when there's clearly a street/road connected at the arrowheads of the zones. I've had several nice buildings become abandoned because of this and it annoys me so much.

That too; I overlooked that.

Here are a few of my gripes:

1. The lack of an easy way to run the game in widescreen.

-CustomResolution:enabled -r1680x1050 Options for your command line. Edit your shortcut. Note leading space

2. Terrible multicore support.

This is a legacy game written in 2002. Why should it have multi-threading?

3. Sims complaining over a commute across the street and abandoning as a result (I do have the mod that fixes this, however)

I assume you have the Network Addon Mod. It is the best fix.

4. The fact that the game is 8 years old and has yet to see a successor.

Will Wright said they had backed-themselves into a corner and a full re-write would be needed. EA isn't interested. If you have problems with this, welcome to the club. Did you read the article by Dirk on the home page?

5. The need to manually adjust the funding sliders for health & education- it gets really annoying once the cities get larger.

It is a feature of the game. The whole point is micromanagement of the variables.

6. That damn environmental advisor.

Gadflies are necessary to frustrate you. Play on hard, and ignore the ticker. If you really want to see her as she is type

CTRL+XdollyllamaRETURN

7. The lack of autosave.

What, you've never heard of CTRL+s?

I really hate bugs!!!

I hate buildings being abandoned with a road right in the frickin`front!

I hate that environmental adviser who shuts your water off even though I placed a pump 10km away from the city!

Have you tried a water treatment plant, whether it's the in-game plant or a downloaded one? Or even just the Data View for water pollution?

And just for the record, the largest of the city tiles are only 4x4 km. ;)

I tried to, but that adviser still shuts off the pump....

As for the city tiles, 10km is only an exaggeration (hyperbole) :thumb: I meant that even if you put it on a blank area on the far end of the city, away from the pollution, she still shuts it off! ;)

I got so sick of the water problems that I made my own BAT for it.

If you can't find it on the STEX, PM me, and I'll send you a couple of links.

The constant threat of CTDs... I know it's a legacy game and all, but it's so irritating. Though normally when I reload the city ends up better as I can correct some mistakes I made before the CTD, it's just annoying playing on the edge all the time.

I just wish it had been written with modding in mind, like one of those paradox games, where you mod them masses without it turning gameplay into a house of cards.

This biggest annoyance is the lack of unity in what to do about its legacy... no one can decide whether to try and rewrite it, try and make the best of what we've got or just give up... all we have is CXL, which isn't much better than sim city 4. It's only better in some areas but not in others.

Well, us old hands know that you just have to hit CTRL+s once in a while, and definitely when we've done something we are not willing to do over. We also know that playing with puzzle pieces can crash you if you touch a transit enabled tile, like a road. With puzzle pieces we zoom in to level 5 and work carefully, saving every time we complete a partial structure.

Since automatic disasters have been removed from the game with Rush Hour, think of the CTDs as disasters, if you like. Generally, an in-game save resets things so you don't get them as often.

As for modding, the game is clearly designed for it. Everything that the game depends on except the hard coded routines is in a set of tables that can be modified when you know how, and added to by creating new lots with the lot editor or the BAT.

The great burning desire we all have is for EA to decide the game is abandonware and publish the source. Not likely since they keep bringing out strange things based on it on other platforms. What it needs is a cleanup, bug fix and recompile. Nothing new, just fix it.

No; I have well over 13,000 items in my Plugins folder, and my game never crashes.

One thing that will cause the type of behavior you describe is if you have a truly excessive number of subway lines - such as one every few tiles in a large city.

I never thought about the subway causing it. I have got a fair bit of subways in my cities, but they aren't greatly used, one like every 100 tiles in a large city.

I just don't know what would be causing it to crash.

Other reasons for my game to crash is: building anything on high altitudes, zooming in or out in a large city, a quarter of them time i save, some landmarks and just randomly.

it's getting really annoying... :|

I think you should open a new thread in Bugs and Technical Difficulties. The first post should contain a description of your machine in detail, and the first 20 lines of your latest exception report, along with a description of what you are doing when the crash occurs. You have a technical problem that may be machine set up related.

^That right there is the thing that annoys me most. Just as my city's really starting to grow, I hit the edge and have to start a new tile. I can't pack more than a few hundred thousand people into a low density city in SC4, but a low density large city in real life can have millions of people.

1: Constant threat of CTDs

2: The 5 minutes loading time for each Gig of plugins

3: Waiting 30 seconds for my parks menu to load.

4: Waiting 5 minutes to load a city.

I actually tried removing every plugin I had this afternoon!

Pros:

Awesome performance; 10 seconds to load a city!

Cons:

No NAM

No plugins

No slope mod

No good houses

No good road networks

Terrain, water, and rocks are crap

Tree controller is just WTH

No money

Demand issues

Few transportation options

Parks aren't good

Airports don't even qualify as such

Scaling is WAY off

Background is fail

Pathfinding is just a joke

Busses don't look good

Trains don't look good

Emergency vehicles don't look good

And that's just a few.

My conclusion? DO NOT remove your plugins. EVER!

That's part of what I mean by "Lack of realism"; Many super-dense cities take up more than just 16 square kilometres (or 6.18 square miles); That's too small (Just look at Los Angeles). And yet it never stopped people from creating hyperdense cities... They simply use multiple tiles and pass it off as one single city.

SC4 is pretty much crap without ANY plugins at all, especially the realism-boosting plugins. And I agree with you.

i think i found the problem, my computer is running over-capicity... and it's like 2 years old so... :|

The game is 10 years old, so if you were running a lot of stuff with it, I would agree with you. However, a two year old machine should run this with absolutely no problem.

You can easily increase your knowledge of what's happens with the game by reviewing some of the crash threads in Bugs and Technical Issues.

OK, here's one that may just be hardware limitations at my end...

I want to play the game (on windowed mode) while running Windows media player along with it.

I can do this with an MMORPG I play, but with SC4 & The SIMs 2 I can not. Both games seem to want to hog the resources all to themselves. I really want to listen to music as well as the audio from movies &/or cartoons I have on here while I play as listening to in game audio can get pretty boring. I know, I know I can just import mp3's into the Mayor Mode Radio station folder but I tend to feel lazy about it.

I can do just that, and still be able to run about 6 other windows. Have you tried software rendering instead?

And I'd disqualify that post, too; It concerns hardware and computer specifications. :whatevs:

Now that's two disqualifications in one page.

Yeah, my specs do suck.

It would be great if there was possibility of building cities in a virtual space, as the producer Monte Cristo, of Cities XL wanted to make ...

Here's another one: auto-streets. I'm placing a rather large (6x6) gridlock in my current city, and this feature is just making zoning a complete pain. Does anybody know of a mod that can disable this? (I'm sure it's been tried/done)
