Some times I combine names of different things.....Like my CJ country is Rep. of Roanoke Island.....Roanoke Island is an island off the coast of North Carolina.

If you have trouble with that, just make up words, be original.....I do that a lot too......like one city namethat I made up was "Torando".

When my city is first starting, I like to name the roads after prominent Maxis-made buildings and industries that first settle in the area. For example, Creighton Avenue (Creighton Bricks), Grundstrom Road (Grundstrom Copper), Victoria Boulevard (Victorian Mansion)

Naming roads after trees is also a good start, like a few people here have mentioned, Pine St, Maple Ave, Poplar Lane, Oak St, etc. As well as presidents, almost every city/town in America has a Washington St.

My largest city, Trentonburg, (pop 300,000) has 247 roads which I have named. I suppose I'm really creative, or just really OCD with stuff like street names. My Planning & Zoning Department does maintain an alphabetical listing in handy pdf format if you are really interested.

Just get a map of a city, go to the index, and rip off all your street names from there! Simple!

I sometimes name my streets after my advisors, or the mayor.

You can use street and road names mentioned in popular culture (or better, parody them).

Examples would be Privet Drive, or Hysteria Lane.

If I ever bother with naming the streets and roads, I give them numbers, then later on give them real names.

For example, I start out with 48 St and eventually I'll change it to something like Clearwater Dr.

Sometimes you can be lazy when you're giving (major) roads a name. A major road leading towards an harbour? Call it Harbour Road! A road that meets the central train station? Call it Station Road! A major road leading to a city called , for example, Simtropolis? Call it Simtropolis Road! You see, sometimes naming streets can be that simple.

A lot of cities in the US follow the following pattern, numbered streets run north and south, named streets run east and west. In Phoenix, for example, there's central avenue, then as you drive west you intersect with 1st Avenue, 2nd Avenue, 3rd avenue, etc. Driving east intersects with 1st Street, 2nd Street, 3rd Street and so on.

As for the named streets, the standard conventions have been mentioned: President's names, Tree names, flower names, names of family members, names of cars you like, names of ocean liners, musicians. Pick something you like and dedicate those streets to it.

Also in the US the interstate highways are numbered odd for those that run north-south (with the lower numbers on the west coast and getting larger as you move east), and even for those running east-west (with the lower numbers in the south and increasing as you move north).

I wonder if there are any alphabetical lists for trees, birds, etc.

Also, the phone book thing would be kind of inappropriate as I live in a place where everyone's names are Spanish.

A lot of older cities will be numbered around the downtown, especially if they are made in a grid. Depending on the orientation, you'll have a large central boulevard (like Main Street) and numbers will go from there; if they go in both directions, you can have a "1st Street East" as well as a "1st Street West" or North and South if you want to be different. Sometimes, roads running perpendicular to numbered roads will have names, or sometimes letters. Often, they won't be renamed until something comes along to cause it to be renamed, like a famous resident or large business or something noteworthy, else they stay as numbers. Out in the very rural areas, the roads are all in perfectly straight lines, and almost invarably numbered really boringly, as in "Road 29" or "Road 42" or something like that. Highways will always be numbered, but sometimes they will also have names, after the urban area they serve or a famous person. When you get into newer suburban subdivisions, they will often have names based on a central theme, like birds or trees or other things you've heard. One city near here has square subdivisions ordered by letter, so you have a D district and F district and G district and so on, and each street in that district starts with that letter. I find parceling out these subdivisions into handy sizes helps with the management of civic services, too. So you end up with a subdivision named after trees, and then an Oakmont Elementary School and Pine Valley Police, centrally located, and stuff like that.

1st Street, 2nd Street, 3rd Street, etc. Avenue A, Avenue B, Avenue C, etc. Good for naming lots of roads really quickly.

I know around me a lot of places have street names after cities in Europe. My friend lives on Lancaster Ln for instance, and every street in his neighborhood is another English city.
