Campbell began its existence in 1878 as a small community of farmers and ranchers who settled in the vicinity of a major river. The town was renamed in 1882 after Lieutenant James R. Campbell sucessfully defended it against a an Indian attack, with his 100 troops working with the settlers to hold off some 1200 Indian attackers. Trade along this river helped to enlarge the town from the initial 30 families to over 10,000 people by the year 1900.   During the 20th century, Campbell became the largest city in its area, and although farming remained the focus of the economy, an industrial sector did develop. In the 1970s, with a developing space program and technology advancing at a faster pace, the mayor of Campbell (then a city of 131,000 residents) announced an initiative to make the city a major player in the technology industry. Today, Campbell's population stands at over half a million, and continues to grow rapidly as the technology and manufacturing sectors outstrip agriculture.

Looks great -- very airy and open for a city with half a million residents!

The open space was necessary in order to fit the freeway. I had to bulldoze 2 neighborhoods, some businesses, and a farm in order to fit the highway network in, especially with the weird way that interchanges will snap to nearby surface roads.

@ Skimbo : not all cities look good with a grid network, but this one doesn't only have grid... it has variation too which makes it look good!

I'm basing some of the look and feel of Campbell, especially the inner city, off of what I saw in Chicago when I visted that city with my high school orchestra back in mid-March (I actually began building Campbell the day I returned home).

    Uptown (top) and Downtown (bottom):

    Campbell's own little Silicon Valley:

    cxl_screenshot_campbell_8.jpg

    Rural farming areas:

    cxl_screenshot_campbell_9.jpg

    And wind farms:

    cxl_screenshot_campbell_10.jpg

A poorer neighborhood, mostly with immigrants from the countries of the former Warsaw Pact (note the flea market):

    cxl_screenshot_campbell_11.jpg

Downtown viewed from above. Some older neighborhoods had to be demolished to make way for the new Highway 131:

    Downtown at night:

Headquarters of the National Farmers' Association:

    Suburbs of Campbell:

Campbell City Hall, built in 1950 to replace the aging town hall on Main Street:

Overview of the city (yes, I know the farms are close. MC decided to put the farmland in the middle of the map, so I couldn't build out until I downloaded the sandbox mod to get more farmland):

Wow! This City has REALLY improved since the last update --- I really like the grid actually, it has a very mid-west feel to it, really reminds me of St. Louis or Minneapolis/St Paul in parts -- keep it up!!

Mini-update: I noticed the roads were kind of difficult to see on the overview map I uploaded, so here's one taken at night so the roads stand out.

It really reminds me of American cities. Lots of grid, which looks awesome with bird's eye view.

    Now for the weekly update.

As we look toward Uptown, one of the city's new downtown bridges can be seen on the left:

    cxl_screenshot_campbell_22.jpg

Looking down at the streets of downtown:

    cxl_screenshot_campbell_24.jpg

    cxl_screenshot_campbell_25.jpg

The wealthiest neighborhood in Campbell. If you have to ask, you can't afford it:

    cxl_screenshot_campbell_26.jpg

    cxl_screenshot_campbell_27.jpg

    The Northwest Freeway (I-82) bridge:

    cxl_screenshot_campbell_28.jpg

The city on the Campbell River:

    cxl_screenshot_campbell_29.jpg

State Highway 431 bridge. This road is relatively new, and links the farms in the hills with Campbell's suburbs and the city itself:

    cxl_screenshot_campbell_30.jpg

The Downtown Bypass was constructed recently to provide more direct access from the Northwest Freeway to downtown:cxl_screenshot_campbell_31.jpg

    cxl_screenshot_campbell_32.jpg

Development begins to push beyond the historic urban area:

    cxl_screenshot_campbell_33.jpg

A new international airport has been constructed. The previous city airport was no longer adequate for handling the volume of travellers passing through Campbell, and it's proximity to the city center made expansion impossible:

I definately love your building placement within each city block. very nice detail with that. I just wish we were able to modify city block auto layout just to make it easier but for now it those of us who put more work and effort that truly reap the better looking cities. Great work.

Actually, what I do is draw the road layout I want, then use the zoning tools to fill it in with lots, and then I bulldoze the filler area around the lots so I can add plazas, parks, and parking lots. Most of the lower density areas outside of my downtown were made with the rectangular zone tool, but I always lay major roads manually to keep the city organized.

As Campbell moves into the 21st century, development continues relentlessly. Today, I will show some of the new construction, as well as a couple parts of the city that I neglected to show you before.

Looking toward the towers of the Lord's Palace, the most luxurious condo development in Campbell. Rooms start at $40,000 a month:

    cxl_screenshot_campbell_37.jpg

And on the other end of the spectrum, these row houses are so cheap that you can live in them with a minimum wage job and still have plenty of cash left over:

    cxl_screenshot_campbell_38.jpg

    cxl_screenshot_campbell_39.jpg

    Every city needs suburbs:

    cxl_screenshot_campbell_40.jpg

    cxl_screenshot_campbell_41.jpg

As development sends land prices skyward, farmers sell out and head for the hills--literally!

    cxl_screenshot_campbell_42.jpg

Doing business from under the bridge:

    cxl_screenshot_campbell_43.jpg

    Wide shot:

    cxl_screenshot_campbell_47.jpg

This bridge links the island neighborhood in east Campbell to the city center:

    cxl_screenshot_campbell_48.jpg

    cxl_screenshot_campbell_49.jpg

The southern stretch of I-82 is finally complete! Now that it's past the city limits, construction is officially "not our problem":cxl_screenshot_campbell_50.jpg
