Remembering Mt. Houston

9.gif

This brings up something we've all probably laughed about. In every town and city there is probably a street or neighborhood with a name that doesn't make a lot of sense.

For instance, a community with the name "heights" located in a valley. Or the old saying "in the suburbs, they cut down trees and name streets after them". I used to live on a street called Stony Brook circle. There was no brook, nor any stones. Then again on Lanae Lane, except none of the houses had outdoor rooms or patios.

My favorite street intersection EVER would have to be the intersection of North South Street and East West Street......yeah...and South Street went east-west and West Street went north-south...

Awaiting signature arrival...

My favorite is "Jaguar Valley Drive", located in a flat area of the Toronto suburbs. Jaguar? In Canada?

There is a tiny stream nearby, so I suppose that one could justify the word "valley", if one tried hard enough.

How about "High Valley Way"?

Also, I love how in Pelham Bay there's this random little dead end named "B Street", with no A Street, C Street, or any other lettered street for miles around.

These interesting street names are mostly located in suburbs and subdivisions. They are named so to entice buyers into buying a house there.

It only happens in North America where businessmen only look at profits and try to entice buyers to buy there without any expensive promotions.

Especially with 'Valley Heights' in some US suburbs and 'Jaguar Valley' in toronto.

Example 1: a buyer wants to live near nature and picks Stony Brook Street as a place to live. He/she expects a stony brook in a natural setting but gets tricked as a brook doesn't exist there

Example 2: A buyer looking for a riverside house finds Riverside Street and buys land there without looking it first. Wrong, it was near a river but sloped away from the river.

...and then there's the town of Jersey Shore, PA. In the middle of the mountains. Sure, why not? This is the state that names towns things like "Moon", "Pillow", or "Bird in Hand". It's all good!

Hell, you can't swing a dead cat in Pennsylvania without hitting some place that has a weird or funny name.

In Biloxi there is a small street called Mc St. There's a McDonalds next to it, but the street was there before the McDonalds.

    Go figure.

Yep, Deer Run is the odd one out... I guess they ran out of suitable songs., I would've suggested "The End" ;-) Blue Jay Way was a Harrison song from Magical Mystery Tour (67)

I prefer numbers(15th Avenue), letters (A street), functional names (Seattle-Tacoma Road), historical names (Pike Street, Martin Luther Avenue) and topographic names (Peasely Cannon Drive, Lake Washington Boulevard). What pisses me off is all the oak, maple, pine, and spruce streets, avenues, and roads. Redwood, cedar, and madrona are less common.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

    Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

Some street names that seem funny to me in my town are:

Major Road - Not really a central road to anywhere where I live, well maybe to the McDonalds or the Burger King, that happen to be across the street from each other.

Sand Hill Road - Connects to Major Road. What makes it weird, is that there is no sand to be found, and it is actually more woods then anything. Also, the road is mostly flat.

There's Streets in my area within 1km range within the city of Haugesund, Norway that's named after the following:

    Precious Stones:

Topaz st, Diamond St, Gem St, Marble St etc

    Then animals:

Fjording way, Døla Way, Stable road.   Named after horses3.gif  (there is actually a stable along Stable road though 3.gif

    Then there's:

Wolf street, Beaver St, Deer St, Doe St, Frog st.

Then there's the usual norse names such as Olav, Sverre , Magnus, Haakon, Tor, Kyrre etc...

Then both the cities of Stavanger and Bergen have the name 'Paradis' for some of their suburbs, which as is obvious means Paradise3.gif

Oslo has an area called Montebello, which as if you know sounds quite odd in a Scandinavian country. Must be some 1940's naming or something, typical of that era anyway. Same with Florida.
