You won't always see trains running. If you check the ridership with the route query tool, and click on the rail, and you see dark blue or orange lines on the railroad, then the rail is being used, whether or not you see the trains. I hope that helps?

I rarely see trains in my game, but, again, it does not mean it is running. Before I got the NAM and was able to drive the elevated rail, I saw the subway trains maybe once (over a five year period). It isn't something to stress about. If you get those colored lines, you got activity... Thats really all that matters.

The only way to know if you have "train traffic" is to use the traffic query (alt-/). The "automata" is only "eyecandy" which relates loosely to the level of traffic on the network, not to whether there is traffic or not.

If your rails are really busy, I mean REALLY busy, maybe like, 30,000 people riding on that rail, then you might see a couple of passenger trains going by on ethier at 8:00a.m. or 5:00p.m, somewhat around those times. I think for every 5,000 sims or 10,000 sims, one train goes by in rush hours. I never really did care, so I never really thought about it.....

I don't really pay much attention to the automata as they have nothing to do with the game, but my best recall is that.. 1. They are in proportion to the level of traffic (and no you need nothing like 30000.. MUCH lower traffic will do fine) and 2. The automata are generated by stations.. the more stations you have the higher probability of automata. Also the trains generated will have a LENGTH that is proportional to the traffic density too.

I've only ever seen a few trains (mainly cos I don't use railways) and see a subway train only every now and again as when I'm in subway view I have the game paused - still, I think the passenger train driving along the railway at night looks pretty cool

    Hello, paulmc,

    Welcome to Simtropolis.

If you are not opposed to modded gameplay, quite some time ago Swamper77 designed some lots that spawn freight and passenger trains, irregardless of actual simulator generation.  They can be found here.  They do have some dependencies, but the links all work.  If you wish to forgo those, the lots will just be blank, and will still work.  You will need to register separately for the SC4D LEX to be able to download there.

    Enjoy the game.
