I just hope it doesn't overly simplify to appeal to a broader market or overly complicate like Empire: Total War did compared to Medieval II: Total War.

The difficulty curve IMO is right on the money with Civ4.

Awesome! Civ 5! I never played Civ4, but I am addicted to Civ III, so here's hoping it's a bit more complicated then that. At least for diplomatic issues, those were always too simple IMO.

Looks interesting, Civ 4 is quite fun to play with all the expansions they have for it, not too difficult, not too hard. The hexagonal tiles is an interesting idea, I think it might just work!

Bought Civ4 when it was released but never really got into it. I hated the stacking units thing it did, you could only attack with a single unit at a time, end tier games became long and boring stalemates until somebody made a mistake. Looking at the single screenshot, looks like they've solved that problem by allowing you to attack with stacked platoons, whoo!

You didn't used the Army creation, right?

I personally liked Civ 2 & Civ 3, I'm going to look further on Civ 5.

Mithrik, Mithril with a k instead of a l, how original, huh?

I can't remember, I recall something a long those lines but I think it was quite limited. I was a little hasty in my assumptions, they may not be stacked units at all, they probably build like that which would be a shame. What I was getting at is being able to build a combined arms group (I.E you can attach a platoon of cavalry to your platoon of rifles in order to increase their strength and resilience against certain types of attack) would be awesome... just have to wait and see I guess.

It has been announced that there is to be only one military unit per tile. The actual definition of what a military unit is is still unknown. Some screenshots seem to indicate that units are mixed with different types, but this aspect is pure speculation at this point. The one military unit per tile means that the Stack of Doom strategy is out the door (finally)

Civilization IV was pretty good but I still prefer Age of Empires (I and II, never played III). I might like this more.

Considering the development of the land around the city and units present nearby, I'm going to take a guess that the city in the picture is probably supposed to represent a city from thousands of years ago, in which case, the city would look rather normal for what it's supposed to represent.

I believe the current city graphics are also placeholders as the actual assets were not yet finished.

As a longtime fan of the Civilization series (in it from the beginning, go EGA!!), I look forward to this. I still play Civ 4 when I get the chance.

Now, if only we could get a modern Simcity...

From what I read from it, its going to add new depth to the strategic aspect. No more stacking up units, thus effectively creating real front lines, taking terrain more into account, ranged units actually capable of shooting over several tiles and of course the hex squares.

I cant wait to try this one out.

Also loved 2 and 4. 2 for its simplicity (and build in cheat codes) and 4 for its easy way to play.

Oh, i really missed real front lines in IV, though i didn't play the game to make war, but to build a huge empire.

- Also a good game to play with a friend or two!

Ouch...being an early addict of the original Civilization, I was looking forward to Civilization 5, but developer Firaxis and marketer Take-Two have pulled a Monte Cristo on us:

Civilization 5 will require Valve's online Steam system of centralized content distribution and DRM online account control, will require online activation after installation through third-party vendor Steam, and will require Steam running in the background scanning your computer and collecting personal information, even for offline single-player play.  Even store bought copies will require going through online and setting up a Steam account and authentication.  Simply put, Steam is required to play.  The Planet Offer meets Civilization.  Aaaaarggh!  Apparently, this bombshell had come out last month or so, around the same time that Monte Cristo was imploding.

While we're at it, special exclusive content will be limited to those who purchase the game through Steam...to activate Babylon and play as the Babylonians, a staple civilization since since the first release, you will have to pay a little bit extra to Steam to download their exlusive special edition version.   Aaaaarggh!  I fear what might one day loom in the future...credit card microtransactions to download and use the Statue of Liberty Wonder even in Single Player.

You can read the ugly details on the Civ 5 forums at http://www.civfanatics.com/

I guess like Cities XL this will be another game I won't buy.  Sigh.  There are only two such strategy series I play, SimCity and Civilization, and both genres are being co-opted into something ugly by online marketeers and surreptitious personal data miners.

Rant rant rant blah blah blah sigh sigh sigh...

OK, Luddite. I might just buy that game because of the features.

To respond to Odainsaker, they intend to make Civ 5 highly moddable and open to the community.

Steam is no conspiracy, heh. Though the only thing I play anymore is old Team Fortress 2 3.gif Jarate Attack!

I might not buy it after all, they got rid of espionage and religion.
