Tenements & Rust: Ghetto Stories

Have you ever heard "In The Ghetto" by Elvis Presley? Here it's described with some pics of Precioustown, the worst district of Capitol City. Are you tired of seeing clean and perfect suburbs? Do you think downtowns full of skyscrapers are not so great? You won't see anything of this here. A CJ inspired by tarrina's Blight, but without the urban renewal part.

Introduction to Precioustown
This ghetto is the result of poor urban planning, rampant political corruption, nearby pollution and total lack of funding. It was intented to be a new place for the rich in Capitol City, but noone thought in placing some services and the District Mayor was too busy grabbing all the money whe could. This is the result:

The Morning Commute...

No schools, no hospitals... Nearly a quarter of population needs public transport for commuting to better parts of Capitol City. They all have to visit twice a day Precioustown subway station, the favourite waiting place for drug pushers and pickpockets.

The other way of commuting is by car or bus, and the fastest way to reach the downtown is taking the highway; bordered with large billboards.

When sun sets, dads come back home and moms call their kids back. It's cold and dangerous out there...

Wow, that is excellent! 6.gif May I ask where you got the train station thing in the second pic, and those sewage lines in the third pic?

As a CJer who also goes against the grain, let me congratulate you for stepping outside the box 3.gif

This has a lot of potential, first off. I think with little more planning and refinement you could have something unique and wonderful in your hands. Try stepping away from maxis and finding some really nice, low wealth details to augment your city (like your drainage canals). Find a source of inspiration, like a RL city's ghetto/rust-belt and try to mimic what details you find.

Best of luck,

-Todd

Wow... great start... some pretty scenes there. I love the custom content you're using, especially that you mix it very well with Maxis...

Great start! I always loved if someone went to the not-so-nice areas!

I do hope to see more "ugly areas" here!

Take care!

    Wow... lots of comments!

DCMetro34: Thanks for your comment! The subway station is Churchway Station, and the sewage lines are part of LA Dirty River Project, both available at the STEX.

    tostartpressanykey: Thank you!

ComputerGuy890100: Thanks for your comment, you'll find tons of political corruption here...

SimHoTToDDy: Thank you very much! I'm a fan of your work (CJ and BATs) and it's nice to have a comment from the guy who runs the best CJ on the new section. I have lots of Maxis because I haven't got enough place for custom content, but I try to place all things I think that can work.

    lucky7: Thanks for commenting!

PhilsCafe: Thanks for your comment! As I said above, I have to do what you're saying...

Kusajika Yachiru: Thanks for your comment, I bet your recreation project will be even greater with the sewage lines!

Formerly, trains full of commuters departed from this station. Nowadays, it is used as a parking lot while weeds grow among the railroad sleepers.

That interchange marks the limit between Precioustown and the industrial district. Where pollution harms your lungs, where the poorest go to their liquor store.

Dark waters under the bridge. All Precioustown sewage, ship fuel and industrial waste ends up here without any treatment

Nice job evoking a grimy and corrupt city. I really enjoy seeing people using billboards, as they're basically a staple for any low-wealth district, especially next to highways. The interchange looks great with all of the development shaped around it. 4.gif

DCMetro34: Thanks for your comment, don't hesitate on asking for more things if you need so...

GreekMan: Thanks for commenting! I'm not very good at making suburbs because there aren't many of them where I live and I haven't got many custom content for them...

ky72x: Thanks for your comment! I love how billboards depicting real world brands add realism to SC4, I tend to use them in all my cities!

    ComputerGuy890100: Thanks for commenting!

TmiguelT: Thanks for your comment, I bet you wouldn't leave Nyhaven for coming to live to Precioustown...

    Rats and grafitti

There are many important structures near the main sewage line. The first of them is the Sports Pavilion, the last Capitol City try to "dignify" Precioustown. They failed on it, but thanks to the Sports Pavilion, Precioustown has the most intimidating atmosphere for its basketball team in the nation.

     92241617.jpg

The Intermarché supermarket was the structure that finally killed all small groceries in Precioustown. Retailers protests against its construction lead to dangerous riots years ago.

This is the point where the two sewage branches join to go to the sea, it is one of the favourite places for kids and junkies to look for something they can play with or sell for some money.

Nice stuff! I really like this "outside of the box" vibe going on here. We need more city jounals like this.

Consider me a follower of the Precioustown CJ.

ComputerGuy890100: Thanks for commenting, but I haven't understood what's wrong with WalMart...

Jim T.: Thanks for your comment, glad you like it and glad you become a follower! I don't know if I'm thinking outside the box or not, but I found my own suburbs a little bland, so I preferred making a ghetto...

toastartpressanykey: Thanks for your comment, I've had to see East Los Angeles with Google Earth. Seems they have no large tenements, but the aspect seems worse than Precioustown. "Cities Crossed by a Dirty River"

TmiguelT: Thanks for commenting, that's been a good one!

At night all cats are black...

    68063489.jpg

That basketball court has become an (even more) dangerous place since it is the favourite place for the Kobras, one of Precioustown teen gangs.

    71285411.jpg

This part of the district burnt some years ago, nobody seems to care for its rebuilding. They prefer to keep it as the place where some go to inject their dose.

    72064654.jpg

But there still hope. In some place, a couple of old women teach the adults basic math and how to write properly. They only dream of leaving Precioustown as soon as possible.

Nicely done! That blur effect on the last photo is very well executed. As well, the silhouetted buildings in picture 2 look quite seedy. Thus why I like them.

Have you ever thought about making this CJ even semi-interactive. I believe it could add a whole new edge, and open up a window of possibilities for you. After all, a wide selection of readers "interacting" with the CJ could point you to a variety of ghetto lots you may not have known about. I say give it a try!
