Does the game lag for everyone?

As my cities grow, they inevitably become unbearably laggy.

Some tips I've heard:

Exit the game every so often

Run on 'very low' graphic setting

Defragment hard drive

Get a better computer (tried the rest, but not this one yet)

-Obviously, I don't blame the game for my choice in laptop, but I have heard it doesn't support dual cores ><

As cities get larger are they laggy for everyone?  Once I exceed 500k the lag reaches two or three seconds or more between me clicking and something happening on the screen.  Is that fairly typical?  When I first start a city I comfortably play on medium graphics with little lag.  I play WoW with no lag, so I'm fairly certain it's not my Internet connection (Comcast).

Maybe tonight or tomorrow I'll post my computer specs - I'm on a different computer at the moment. (Which is also why I'm here and not playing the game.)

Yeah, it will start to slow down after 4 hours of play for me. Restarting the game solves it but not as well as restarting PC, as it slows down after 2 hours instead.

Although, I recently got a 9800gt to replace the 8600gt I had - the difference was impressive graphically as everything runs smoother but I got an extra hour of playtime because of it!

The lagging is not such a big problem (Just restart and most of it is gone) But I've got to say that I've never buildt a city over 3 mio. Population. (And theese things may change in bigger cities)

I love Dragons!

I pulled myself away from CXL to share my specs.

    From the "System properties" tab:

    Windows Vista Home Premium

Model: HP Pavilion dv9000 (the sticker says HP pavilion dv9429us Notebook PC)

Processor: AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-64 2.20 GHz

    Memory (RAM): 2.00 GB

    System type: 32-bit Operating System

Graphics: The sticker says "nvidia GeForce Go 6150 graphics with upto 559MB shared video memory.

What's the weakest link?  2 GB RAM is a bit low isn't it?  I've seen complaints from players with 8GB RAM >< I assume the 559MB shared video memory is chewing up my RAM too and a better graphics card (if it's even feasible) would consume more RAM?

Ouch, supposedly 2GB is the max RAM capacity, but I'll have to see what I can find out about putting 2GB in each of the 2 slots.  I've seen comments that it may support more memory, but it's untested ><  Anyone tried this?

yah that's pretty much the same system I have. I found that the bigger my city got the lower the graphics setting I had to go

The amount of memory you have on your pc just determines how long it will take before it will start lagging. The opening and closing of the various tabs is what eats up the memory as well as using building placement mode. And to add to that. every trade confirmation that pops up increases it. Trading a lot in planet mode will also become extremely laggy as well. Exiting and entering will eventually crash the game if do it too many times.

When I first start playing it's rather functional and enjoyable.  It quickly progressively worsens, and after about 30 minutes it becomes very frustrating.  I imagine more RAM will make a noticeable differnce, but IDK if tat alone will be worth the effort.

WHEW, I'm glad to hear it wasn't my imagination that trade and building placement were creating problems!  Is that something MC can improve, or is that just the way things work?

I'm actually playing a city that does very little trading atm since I found the lag worse when I traded more.  I really like individual building placement sometimes, but it definately seems to make things slower.  When I play CXL is the only program I have open.

I heard 32bit vista has a 3 or 3.5gb ram max (even with 4gb installed), so I may upgrade to the 64 bit version assuming I can or just get windows 7 (might be happy to get rid of vista anyway) and get the full 4gb.  I'll have to check prices, but I know I saw 2 2gb ram laptop memory chips for $80 /shrug

I was actually looking at laptops for my wife and found a 4gb HP for $550, but to really get a serious gaming laptop is twice that ><  I guess I'll keep finding ways to amuse myself with cities <1 mil :/

The lagging is really frustrating. I just bought a new pc for only this game, it got 2 times more then it asked for recommed stuff, but still it lags like hell. Can be the I-net to thought.

Around 1 our, the game will get laggy, after you reached 50.000 people and if you reached the 2.5 million you will die of instanity, because then lagging is all there is.

They really need to fix it. Nvidea Geforce 9600 1.5 GB, 3 GB ram, 2.5 GHZ must be enough I think.

Do you think population is a reasonable measure for how much lag to expect?  More specifically: Is a city of 1 million high density residential more or less laggy the a city of 1 million low residential?  Would a very low population city with tons of farms covering a lot of the map lag worse than a tiny area filled with high density?  I've tried to limit my population to avoid lag, but I'm wondering how much other factors affect it, like: industry, roads, number of zones, parks, etc.

In my first several cities I had planned to fill as much of the map as possible, and get as high population as I could - mostly high density.  After 1 million it got really frustrating and my city was very incomplete and ugly.  I decided to try and make a more complete looking city with 1 million as a kind of self imposed limit on my population.  The city avoids trade as much as possible: it produces most of it's own tokens (I've built everything except fuel, but sometimes I do still have to buy some other tokens) and I sell offices to Don Madliff.  When I first start it lags almost a second between my action and something happening on screen, and gets worse the longer I play.  If I play for more than 30 minutes at a time it seems to crash when I quit the game ><  I'm also wondering if the larger city causes problems with my cities not showing up when I log in.

I don't mind the cost of the game, and the monthly fee.  I'm unphased by the lack of mass transit and GEMs.  I don't mind a lot of the other limitations.  I don't care that I can't really appreciate the graphics.  BUT, if the game is unplayabe there will be no option but to quit 15.gif

I heard tha CXL still has memory leak issues, or it is simply a high RAM consuming game.
