~ The Museum Island, sometimes erroneously called the Museum Island (or, in

German Museum Island) in Berlin, Germany, is the name of the northern half

of Spreeinsel, an island in the Spree river in the downtown. (The southern part

Island Fischerinsel called "Isla de los Pescadores" ~

~ The island received its name from several internationally renowned museums now occupy

the entire northern half of the island (originally a residential area dedicated to

"Art and Science" by King Frederick William IV of Prussia in 1841). Constructed under several

Prussian kings, their collections of art and archeology were turned into a public foundation in

1918, the Foundation of Prussian Cultural (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation), which

today maintains the collections and museums ~

    68343325.jpg

~ The Prussian collections were separated during the Cold War with the city in its

whole, but were finally merged after German reunification ~

~ Currently, the Museum Island and the collections are in process of reorganization.

Given that several buildings were destroyed during the Second World War and partly

exhibition space is in the process of reconstruction, the information provided

here may be subject to change ~

    10042444.jpg

~ The Old Museum (Altes Museum) is the oldest museum. It was built

between 1823 and 1830 to plans by Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel.

It was erected on the opposite side of the Berliner Stadtschloss (Castle of Berlin, which no longer exists).

It was intended to accommodate paintings that came from the Castles of Berlin, Potsdam,

Charlottenburg and two private collections (the library and the Giustiniani collection Solly).

This building is where Frederick William III first put to the public

The Antikensammlung, the Prussian collection of antiquities. This collection is now

part exhibited again at the Old Museum ~

    39234995.jpg

~ The new Museum (Neues Museum), located behind the Old Museum, was completed

agreement in 1859 with plans Stüler August, a student of Schinkel. Was

almost destroyed during the Second World War (there were only some of the walls

outdoors) and in 2009 it completed its recovery preserving remnants of the former

Respecting the building structure. The architect commissioned to redo and rebuild

the building was David Chipperfield and spent about 292 million. On this site

will be shown, as before the war, Egyptian and prehistoric collections, including the

    Famous bust of Nefertiti ~

    22086450.jpg

~ The Old National Gallery (Alte Nationalgalerie) was completed in 1876, also according

to August Stüler designs to house a collection of nineteenth-century art donated

by the banker Joachim H. W. Wagener. The collection was expanded significantly and today is

one of the largest collections of sculptures and paintings of the nineteenth century in Germany.

The building was badly damaged during WWII and was restored only

completely and reopened in 2001, today houses collections boxes

(while the sculptures are out of the island, in nearby Friedrichswerdersche

Kirche, a neo-gothic church designed by Schinkel) ~

    16825325.jpg

~ In 1904 he opened the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum, today called Bode Museum.

Located at the northern tip of the island and easily recognized because of its dome

coppery brown, the Bode Museum was closed in 2000 for reconstruction and reopened

17 October 2006. It houses collections of sculpture and art

    Late-antique and Byzantine ~

~ The last of the museums is the Pergamon Museum, completed in 1930, home

original size buildings, rebuilt, tells how the Pergamon Altar, the Gate

Ishtar gate of Babylon and the market of Miletus, which includes portions taken

    Excavations originating from ~

    72665500.jpg

~ The collections that joined in the Museum Island for the first time allowed

unified look to European art from antiquity to the nineteenth century, Submitted

in buildings that show the history of museums in themselves above course

A hundred years and that is why the whole complex was added to the list

of Unesco World Heritage Site in 1999 ~

~ James Simon Gallery will be a new visitors center for the Museum Island,

located between the Neues Museum and the Kupfergraben. Besides the museums, on the island

the Cathedral of Berlin near the Lustgarten (Pleasure Garden) which belonged

    above the Berliner Stadtschloss ~

    | | Berliner dom | |

~ The Cathedral of Berlin is known in Germany as the Berliner Dom, is a Lutheran church

located in Berlin. They are facing the Lustgarten and the Royal Palace in Berlin. This temple

never has housed a Catholic bishop, so not exactly a cathedral ~

~ The Berliner Dom was built by order of Kaiser Wilhelm II between 1895 and 1905, was designed

by Julius Raschdorff. The bombings of the Second World War seriously affected

the structure of the temple. The building was remodeled and now looks more simple top

    that the original design ~

~ The cathedral is beautiful and elegant, very well kept. You'll be able to observe significant

artworks as Body Sauer, influence the neo-baroque pulpit and stained glass

designed by Anton von Werner. The altar dates back to 1850 ~

~ Inside the cathedral you can visit the crypt with more than 80 sarcophagi where

find the bodies of the kings of Prussia. You can see the whole church from

a lookout at the top. It's a broad staircase of 270 steps that allow you to have

very beautiful view of the place ~

    ~ Hope you like it.

What an excellent start! Very good work, I like the layout of the river promenades and the stairs you used, very well arranged. Good information concerning the history, this should always be appreciated to make people get some background info and maybe the feeling of a foreign city.

And the AUSTRIAN (me) must tell you: for those, who have not visited Berlin yet, go and see! The city is very hip and one amongst the best of contemporary arts and culture including subcultures. It is still booming also regarding the aspects before- I have been there 4 times; if you not only take it from a typical tourists' point of view this city offers you much more and hopefully further than the eye can see.

No, I don't work for the local tourist agency, I just wanted to make you aware of a nice jewel.

So, kelistmac, I think I'll have to CJ Vienna in the near future, lol

    looking forward to more,
