Is it possible to add more smileys for the chat room?

eg XD, XP, :/, o_O, -_-, , D: and a regular crying one. right now it is a choice between either a frown or a tantrum.

Most of those smilies you can do via typing. Which is what you did. xD is fine for a laughing face. O_o and o_O and the variations are fine; and everyone knows their meanings.

If we were to add graphical smilies; then it would not only slow down the chat, but it would also cause arguments; with people who liked them and didn't.

Plus it would be hellish confusing.

So in essance; no, the text versions are fine. We won't be adding smilies to the chat any time soon.

Well, looks like I was told!  I guess we will be getting new chat icons after all.

While I'd love it for the smileys from the forum to be used in the chat, the present chat software doesn't allow for the smileys to be replaced.

It's a bit ridiculous if you ask me, but it seems to be how realchat made it. X(

Don't count on it. As I recall, dirk has a policy that all smilies must be animated.

Of course, anyone can still use these things by inserting them as an image, so no huge loss.

I'd love to create some new icons, but I'm not sure if I'll have the time to get around to it, so I thought it would be a good idea to open up the opportunity to everyone to contribute their own icons for our official live chat app.

It's very simple, just use the existing chat icon PNGs to work from, and add or replace with your designs. You can make as many as you want, just increase the size of the PNG to accommodate. You can grab them below.

We'll vote on our favourite, and they will be added to the chat.  Post your sets below!

What about just keeping it simple at first, like the ST logo, this one:

And dirk, how do we edit the PNG. Do we have to replace the icons, or can we add more? I wasn't too sure on that point.

And how do we add? do we make the image horizontally bigger? Or vertically?

Also, if we do add, do we move everything below the last smiley down? I noticed that there is a thin white line below the smilies, do we move this, and everything below it down?

It would be nice if we went retro and brougt back all all the smileys from the older version of chat. I dont know if anyone still has the images around somewhere but there was a Sc4 icon and many others that this chat doesnt have

Yeah, um... don't save your image in jpeg format. You dither it and thus ruin it. The original is in png format for a reason.

You can add to the chat emoticons as long as you keep each icon the same size and takes up the same amount of space. You can just increase the dimensions of the PNG to suit. (Remember, these are for the Chat, not the forums)

As Duke noted, use PNGs to maintain transparent background, and to keep the images lossless!

Can the chat emoticons be animated, and if so, what is the max file size? I love animating .gifs, and I want to know if I should put in the effort of animating my new tank:

They can't be animated, they all have to be on a single PNG sprite sheet (see above!)

I have resized and fixed the old chat emotes, this is the format i think it should be in but im not 100% sure
