The Road Geek Challenge

It's been a while since I invented a real forum game, so I thought it's time to start a new one. <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/1.gif>

This is called the Road Geek Challenge.  As expected, the questions will pertain to highways, roads, signs, anything that road geeks drool about.  I'll try my best to add an international flavor to thee questions, but being a resident of the U.S., that might be a somewhat difficult task.  Anyway, here's the rules:

1.  Only one guess is allowed per post.  Unlike the Mystery City games, you can only post once every 12 hours.  Yes, 12 hours.
2.  Points will be awarded to the first person who answers correctly.  The amount of points awarded will depend on the difficulty of the question.
3.  No cheating, which basically means you can't edit your posts after posting the answer.  Google, on the other hand, is not cheating, unfortunately. <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif>
4.  No clues will be given in this game.
5.  Have fun and let your road geek run free! <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/1.gif>

Scoreboard:

Rank-Player----Points
1----hello_SC4-3
2----Med-Rox---2

The Palmetto Expressway is the 2nd busiest expressway in Dade County.  The road begins in North Miami Beach, but the expressway begins at the Golden Glades Interchange, and loops around the city of Miami, south to Kendall, to US-1.  I-75 begins at the junction of FL-826 and FL-924 in Hialeah.  The road was constructed from 1958 to 1962, and has been expanded several times during its history due to the booming suburbs.  Currently, the expressway is under major expansion to accommodate the huge traffic load, and construction isn't set to be completed until 2010.

The maximum speed allowed on Sweden's motorways is 110 kph, or 68 mph.  The speed limit for cars with trailers is 80 kph, or 50 mph, as hello_SC4 stated.  Some stretches of motorways in larger cities have reduced speed limits.  Heavy fines and a possible suspension of your license are the penalties for speeding in Sweden.  Also, since much of Sweden is forested, there are numerous moose and deer crossing signs along the country's motorways.

    The Pittsburgh Wayfinder System

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

The Wayfinder System was designed by Bob Firth of Informing Design in Pittsburgh.  The system is used for residents and visitors to navigate around the city easier and faster.  The system organizes the city into five regions, North Side, South Side, Downtown/Golden Triangle, Strip District, and East End.  The signs use a color-coded system.  More information can be found by clicking the link below.

The N3 National Road in South Africa extends from Johannesburg to Durban, a distance of over 550 km, or about 350 miles.  In May 1998 the South African National Roads Agency and the N3 Toll Concession Limited signed a 30-year concession contract for the extension, upgrading and maintenance of the 420km stretch of road on the N3 from Heidelberg to Cedara.  Construction is expected to last about 10 years at a cost of 1.5 billion rands, approximately 10 billion U.S.

New Jersey, Delaware, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oklahoma (There are only 6. New Mexico is a circle, but has a weird red ring on the inside of it, so I don't think that counts.)

    diggin'up a dead game here.

Virginia does use circle shaped route markers, but for their county routes. I think we're talking primary state routes.

I think Mdz1001 has the right answer, but I would have left in New Mexico as a choice. It may have a red ring on the inside of the circle, but its a circle route nonetheless.

Okay, I think I'll ask some questions of my own here. Anyone can answer. Some are easier than others.

1)What does almost every american roadgeek agree is the most boring stretch of highway in the country?
2)What did american truckers rate as the number one worst highway in the country in terms of traffic conditions?
    3) Name all US states that still use old fashoned sequential numbering for exits as opposed to milepost numbering.
    4) What is the longest interstate highweay?
    5) What is the longest 3DI[three digit interstate]?
    6) what is the only 3DI to pass through three different states.
    7) Name all one and two digit interstate highways that don't cross a state line.
    8) What is the only 3DI that doesn't have a parent interstate?
    9) What is the highest exit number in the US and where is it?

    The answers are as follows:

1)What does almost every american roadgeek agree is the most boring stretch of highway in the country? I-80 through Pennsylvania
2)What did american truckers rate as the number one worst highway in the country in terms of traffic conditions? The Cross Bronx Expressway, I-95, Bronx, NY
    3) Name all US states that still use old fashoned sequential numbering for exits as opposed to milepost numbering. CT, RI, MA, VT, NH, NY. Pennsylvania, Maine and Florida recently switched to milepost. Delaware get's a sort of here because on the newer highway, SR1, they're mileposted, but on I-95, I-495, and I-295, they're still sequential.
    4) What is the longest interstate highweay? I-90
    5) What is the longest 3DI[three digit interstate]? I-476, PA
    6) what is the only 3DI to pass through three different states. I-270. OH/IN/KY
    7) Name all one and two digit interstate highways that don't cross a state line. H1(HI), H2(HI) ,H3(HI) ,4(FL) ,12(LA), 16(GA), 17(AZ), 19(AZ), 27(TX), 37(TX), 43(WI), 45(TX), 49(LA), 72(IL), 73(NC), 74(NC), 86(ID), 87(NY), 88(IL), 88(NY), 96(MI), 97(MD), 99(PA)
    8) What is the only 3DI that doesn't have a parent interstate? I-238, Bay area, CA
    9) What is the highest exit number in the US and where is it? 880, I-10, TX

    Next set:
    10) Name all Interstate numbers (1 and 2 digit) that are reused.
    11) What interstate ends at a bed and breakfast?
    12) What interstate is signed in metric (kilometers instead of miles)?
    13) What 3DI number is used the most times?
    14) What is the longest interstate that doesn't cross a state line?
    15) What is the world's busiest toll road?
    16) Name all interstates (1 and 2 digit) that don't have any 3DI's to them.
    17) What is the only interstate to have it's designation written into law?
    18) Why do some state routes in new england (e.g. 8, 10, 32) go through multiple states, not changing numbers across state lines?

If you always take the same road, you will never see anything new.

Vid, on the Alaska Interstate thing, there are no interstates in Alaska. Sure, there are highways and split highways but no interstates (but it does have the most westerly highway point in the USA I believe, Anchor Point, AK)

    10) Name all Interstate numbers (1 and 2 digit) that are reused.

Like, how 80/90 merge and split again?  Or I-86, in NY and Idaho, non-contiguously?

    11) What interstate ends at a bed and breakfast?

There's a bed and breakfast about 3 blocks from the west end of I-8 in Ocean Beach, San Diego, CA.  Not sure you mean that one, but it's close.  The skate park is way, way closer.  (You can see it from the stoplight at the end of I-8, if you kept going straight you'd hit a fence then a few ramps.)

    12) What interstate is signed in metric (kilometers instead of miles)?

    No idea.

    13) What 3DI number is used the most times?

    It's gotta be x90 or x95, probably 190, 290 or 495.

    14) What is the longest interstate that doesn't cross a state line?

    I-45 in TX?

    15) What is the world's busiest toll road?

    NYS Thruway?

    16) Name all interstates (1 and 2 digit) that don't have any 3DI's to them.

    I-8 doesn't.

    17) What is the only interstate to have it's designation written into law?

I-99 was the first, but I think I-86 in Idaho, as well as one other have been since.

    18) Why do some state routes in new england (e.g. 8, 10, 32) go through multiple states, not changing numbers across state lines?

    Good planning?

    13) 295
    14) I 45 TX
    15) NJ Turnpike
    16) 4,8,12,17,19,24,27,37,39,43,45,49,66,68,69,73,74,82,86,88,89,93,97,99

Here are the answers two the second Set:

    10) Name all Interstate numbers (1 and 2 digit) that are reused. 74(IL/IN/OH & NC), 76 (CO/NE & OH/PA/NJ), 84 (OR/ID/UT & PA/NY/CT/MA), 86 (ID & PA/NY), 88 (IL & NY)
    11) What interstate ends at a bed and breakfast? I was reffering to I-70 outside of baltimore. this is notable because the highway was supposed to extend east of here to meet with I-95. The strange mini stretch of freeway that bears the mark of US 40 to the west of downtown was to be the eastern end of a bigger I-170
    12) What interstate is signed in metric (kilometers instead of miles)? I-19, AZ, since when built the US was on the verge of going metric, and since it leads to and from Mexico, which is metric anyway.
    13) What 3DI number is used the most times? I-295 is used six times: ME, MA/RI, NY, NJ/DE, MD/DC, VA, and FL
    14) What is the longest interstate that doesn't cross a state line? I-87, NY.
    15) What is the world's busiest toll road? The New Jersey Turnpike
    16) Name all interstates (1 and 2 digit) that don't have any 3DI's to them. H2, H3, 4, 8, 12, 17, 19, 27, 37, 39, 43, 49, 57, 66, 68, 73, 86, 88, 97, 99. compare this with the list of intrastate interstates. Notice a trend?
    17) What is the only interstate to have it's designation written into law? I-99, PA. This was Bud Shuster's doing. Part of why all the roadgeeks hate him so much.
14.gif Why do some state routes in new england (e.g. 8, 10, 32) go through multiple states, not changing numbers across state lines? The reason for this was that way back around the turn of the century, the legislatures of the states of new england met and decided to number some New England Interstates They even got New York in on the plan, but only east of the hudson river (Hence why NY 22 goes from the bronx all the way to cna da, it was originally New England 22) Unfortunately, the system never got too far off the ground, and was scrapped entirely when the Feds adopted the US route system. New England 8 became CT 8, MA 8, and VT 8. New England 10 became  CT 10, MA 10,  and NH 10. New England 32 became CT 32, MA 32, and NH 32. New England 2 brcame MA 2 and NY 2. New England 17 was eaten up by CT 2 and peices of US 44and US 7. New England 9 became VT 9, NH 9, ME 9, and a peice of NY 7. New England 16 became ME 16 and NH 16. New England 12 became CT 12, MA 12, and NH 12. New England 4 became ME 4, NH 4 and (interestingly enough) a lot of US 4. New England 20 became US 20 (the portion east of Albany) and so on and so forth.... there is a site somewhere that lists them all, but I don't remember the URL.....

    Set 3:
    19) What is an HOV lane?
    20) What color and shape is used to represent the Italian Autostrad

If you always take the same road, you will never see anything new.

    19) What is an HOV lane?

High Occupancy Vehicle.  In California, this means carpools also, depending on the area 2+ or 3+ people per vehicle.

    21) Where is the most extensive subway system in the world?

Tokyo, London, or NY...  I'll guess...  NY

    22) Where is the only public Monorail used for Commuter transport in the US?

    Seattle?

    24) What is currently the worlds longest bridge (from anchorage to anchorage)?

The Akashi Kaikyo bridge in Japan?

    25) Where can you find the old London Bridge?

    Havasu City, Arizona, US

    26) Where can you find 'Carhenge'?

    Alliance, Nebraska

    27) What Lighthouse is pictured on the bags of Cape Cod Brand Potato Chips and where is it (looking for a town name)?
