Each tile is 16x16 meters.

Small city is 64x64 tiles.

Medium city is 128x128 tiles.

Large city is 256x256 tiles.

1000 meters= 1 kilometer = 0.62137 miles.

1,609.3 meters = 1 mile.

Thank you I was having issues without those calculations. I wrote them down and with them my map should be a fun map for doing coastline stuff. Thanks Tung

Where do these numbers come from? I'm playing the San Francisco region that came with SimCity "box" (SC4 deluxe). It looks like each tiny square is closer to 60m (seven miles = ~200 squares), nowhere near the 16m I see mentioned here and elsewhere.

Could it be that out-of-the-box pre-fab regions are inconsistent in what scale they used? A four-to-one scaling error would explain why there's no hope of cramming in anything like the real-world transit network and financial district in the space available. It would also explain why I think freeways should fit into a one-square-wide ribbon when RWH modders say they should be even wider than the 360-foot wide Maxis standard (room for 18 lanes in each direction).

Since my play in that region is a training exercise, I wouldn't mind tossing it and starting over on a better SF Bay Area map. Can anyone recommend one drawn to scale? I'd especially like to find one that reaches Palo Alto where I grew up.

I seriously doubt that any of the Maxis regions are to scale.  I know that each tile is definitely 16 meters, but I don't know where we first learned it.  I think it might even be mentioned within the game's code.

Just look at the tiles.  A road takes up about half a tile of width, which according to the established scale, would make it about 8 meters or 26 feet wide--pretty normal width in real life.

If you're looking for to-scale maps, just search the STEX for "to scale."  Most descriptions will mention it.

Among other places this information is also included in the manual batch editor inside your game's installation directory

1tile = 16mx16m. Anyone who BATed can vouch for that.
