I thought this was kinda interesting being that I'm going into the field of Aerospace Engineering.

EDIT: Added another Topic instead of creating a new thread!

this story here friday morning at 7 30 AM I'm guessing eastern a rocket is supposed to hit the moon at 6000 MPH launching dust and debris 6.2 miles into the moons Atmosphere. The reasoning behind this is to see if there is Ice below the dust and rocks on the moons surface. This little stunt will cost $79 Million Dollars YAY?

It hasnt happened yet. The actual moon explosion happens early friday morning if you live on the east coast. If your west of the mississipi then you wont be able to see it. but if your in Australia, In sydney it will happen 10:30 pm friday night. I dont know about other places but it should be dark enough.

they say you should be able to see it if you have a 10 inch telescope.

Wait, they're launching a rocket at the moon? I'm sure it would look cool, but...

Isn't there a possibility that if the moon was hit with enough force that it could be pushed out of it's orbit, even sllightly? And wouldn't that cause massive chaos on the oceans?

Now I will eagerly await a sciency person to comment on how wrong I am... hopefully.2.gif

On the news, they just said it's scheduled for 7:30 a.m. simtrop time.  (okay, that's not how they phrased it 3.gif )

That would have to be a pretty forceful hit, wouldn't it?   If it helps any, they are planning to hit the south pole.

I'm not that sciency anymore.

When I was a kid, I had a telescope that I loved.   I recently admitted that I hadn't used it in years and it was time for it to move on.  It is now in the hands of a little girl who was very eager to get it.     I'm glad she will be caring for it.

It would take something much, much larger than a puny little probe to knock the moon 'further' away from the Earth.  And in case you didn't know this, the Moon moves two inches further away from the Earth every year.2.gif

It's just a missile, which would do basically squat to disturb the moons orbit. But believe me, i thought the exact same thing when i heard that, and so did my mom. lol But yeah, something that small would be like kicking a skyscraper.

Too bad It'll be dark and way early in the morning to see it from Washington...plus i'll be sound asleep. lol Can't wait to see the vids that come from it though!

Someone put the probes effect on the moon similar to the effect of an eyelash dropping onto the floor of a Jet airliner.

Looking at it from a simplistic physics standpoint, MmVm+MpVp=McVc (where m is moon, p is probe, c is combined and M is mass, V velocity.

Lets look at it from the reference frame of the moon (eg, so velocity of the moon is zero). The mass of the moon is 7.36 × 10^22 kgs. The velocty of the probe is about 2680m/s, and its mass should be something like 2300kg (19 orders of magnitude lower than the mass of the moon).

Doing the maths gets a change in velocty of the final combined mass of about 8.37 x 10^-17 m/s. This speed is tiny. It would take 378million years for the moon to move 1 meter out of its orbit at this velocity. Also consider that the moon itself is more than 360000km away from the earth already.

As for the cost, take note that this mission was launched with another one at the same time. I am not sure that the 37million was just for this mission, or was combined between them, but its something ot keep an open mind about.

Nothing that NASA will launch has the mass or velocity necessary to significantly alter the moon's orbit.  The moon is simply too massive.

Concerning the costs: NASA has been tasked with making the preparations for returning humans to the moon and if they are going to put humans on the moon for extended periods of time, they need to find water supplies.  That is something NASA is hoping to accomplish with this mission.  If you think $79 million is a high price to pay to find water, consider this: NASA needs to find water sources on Mars for the inevitable manned mission to Mars.  Back in 2005, the executives at NASA's Johnson Space Center approached the engineering directors at the university I am attending and asked that the senior engineering students tackle the problem of designing prototype robots for water excavation missions on Mars.  The agreement was that the students would design the prototypes (dubbed BEAST and DEEP) and that those prototypes would be turned over to Lockheed Martin's Aerospace Division for further refinement and finalization.  Even with the prototypes being given to the company for free, Lockheed Martin's bill to NASA will be over $80 million (and that doesn't include the actual mission to put the robots on Mars).

how many people have those?

I  still have a 6in refracting scope boxed up in my moms attic since 1989, as the viewing here is god awefull due to light polution.

Science Stuff.

the moon is simply to massive to be affected by an impact of this size. Seriously some people watch to many movies.

That's just what they want you to think. Clearly this bombing is designed to wipe out all evidence of the sound stage that was built there to fake the moonlandings.

Updated article about how the crashes came through, apparently it wasn't what they expected a lot of fuzzy pics and video but NASA still excited about all the Data.
