Sea Depths for Ships/Ferries

Hi all,

After just living with 'natural' coastlines courtesy of God Mode terraforming, I've been experimenting with the Omnibus 'Straight Coastlines' Tutorial.  Just want to know how deep the water needs to be for ships and ferries- if there even is a limit at all.

Picture taken from Tutorial:

index.cfm?event=Main&path=Special.Files.

Would I need to use the digging lots again (For examle, at the edge of the beach underwater) to achieve a channel deep enough for shipping?

Cheers.

I don't know the exact clearance absolutely required, but I set all "navigable water" at -15meters.. I know that all ingame ships and ferries can handle that fine.. oh.. and they won't make sharp turns (the animations.. the game itself doesn't care!! so keep in mind you're talking "eyecandy" not function) As far as I'm aware the "function" is only blocked by bridges that are too low, but I suppose you could find a depth that would be too shallow.. hmmm.. let me put it this way.. if you can properly place the "stations" .. ie yacht clubs, marinas, ferry stations, seaports, etc.. I think the "function" is good..

Gave it a try with Ferries/Marinas and well it works at what would seem minimal depth Although the ship/boats go very ghost ship like, fading in and out of existence with UDI.

Although I'm going to deepen the coast lines - it just looks way too unrealistic.

    Thanks for the help.

If you enjoy "natural beaches" which you've suggested you do like, you have to do it just like its done in the "real world".. that is ports and etc have to be either built in "natural deep water" areas OR you have to clear "channels" for the traffic.. which has to happen in real ports too

It seems we'll have to make an experiment to determine such depths. Now, with my in-game observations, the minimum depth is characterized by the following:

    - both the pier and the waterway should meet it

    - on the game's topographic map, waters too shallow for navigation will appear whitish, like the sealevel and slightly above sealevel terrain

    - with the areas deep enough for ships will have visible waves (the 'rippled sea' texture). The same may be true for other coastal mods with differing textures for different water depths

    1. There isn't a listed minimum depth for the ports and ferry terminals. The auto ferry automata model hull extends 2 meters underwater and the cargo ship automata hulls extend 6 meters underwater. I would say ....
